Pedagogical Considerations And Challenges For Sociotechnical Integration Within A Materials Science Class, Laura A. Gelles, Susan M. Lord Jan 2021

Pedagogical Considerations And Challenges For Sociotechnical Integration Within A Materials Science Class, Laura A. Gelles, Susan M. Lord

School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

This paper describes the development and refinement of sociotechnical content within an introductory Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) course by incorporating principles of sustainability (i.e., social and environmental context), interdisciplinary collaboration, and best pedagogical practices. The study draws on student data from focus groups, interviews, final exam responses, and researcher and instructor reflections on the practical realities of teaching sociotechnical modules.

Our results show that students demonstrated greater awareness of social and environmental issues. However, they also expressed a need to engage beyond surface-level awareness to better understand the direct impact of engineering decisions on people and the environment. While …

As Catholic Schools Become More Diverse, How Should We Prepare New Catholic School Educators For Inclusive Schools? An Analysis Of Research On University And Diocesan Teacher Training, Rebekka Jez, Julie C. Cantillon, Lauren H. Ramers, Melissa M. Burgess

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Educators can improve the academic and socioemotional wellbeing of their students if they are equipped with strategies and skills to support learners and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences—such as culturally and linguistically diverse students, students with differing abilities, and those who may experience trauma and/or socioeconomic challenges. To learn more about this topic, a Catholic university and local diocese partnered to examine the literature on the impact of Catholic teachers in under-resourced schools; practices for training Catholic educators with skills to meet the needs of all learners; and the structures needed to ensure that diocesan and university supervisors are …

Antebellum Black Climate Science: The Medical Geography And Emancipatory Politics Of James Mccune Smith And Martin Delany, Colin Fisher Jan 2021

Antebellum Black Climate Science: The Medical Geography And Emancipatory Politics Of James Mccune Smith And Martin Delany, Colin Fisher

History: Faculty Scholarship

This article argues that two prominent antebellum Black physicians—James McCune Smith and Martin Delany—developed competing scientific theories of nature’s impact on the human body in response to the climatic theories of the American Colonization Society, polygenist race scientists, and southern defenders of slavery. It further argues that the physicians’ divergent conclusions regarding nature’s agency played a significant role in underwriting arguably the most important and consequential political debate in antebellum Black America—namely, the dispute between integrationists who advocated remaining in the United States and fighting for equality and emigrationists who argued that America was so hopelessly racist that African Americans …

Challenging Bias Against Women Academics In Religion, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

In today’s world, people access knowledge instantaneously on Internet-connected devices such as laptops, smartphones, and smart televisions. We can ask Siri and Alexa any question imaginable while driving or cooking a meal. The source for this readily accessible information is a changing array of digital, tertiary knowledge-sharing platforms. The day-to-day decisions we make, along with our opinions and views of the world, are shaped by the knowledge we glean from these sources. Bias exists on these digital platforms and matters, especially to underrepresented and oppressed populations, such as women and people of color. This volume attends to bias in knowledge …

China’S Bri In Central Eastern European Countries: “17+1” Connectivity, Divisiveness, Or Pathway To Eu-China Fta?, Ronald C. Brown Dec 2020

China’S Bri In Central Eastern European Countries: “17+1” Connectivity, Divisiveness, Or Pathway To Eu-China Fta?, Ronald C. Brown

San Diego International Law Journal

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) continues to embrace and connect China with European Union (EU) Member countries; the latest in 2019 with Italy, a G-7 member, also joining. EU members participating in the BRI include Poland, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, and Slovakia. While Germany and France lead the EU in trade and investment with China, political winds may be blowing. The EU has noticed that the seventeen Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) under the “17+1” format, a majority of which are EU members, are capturing greater amounts of Chinese trade under their BRI …

Refocusing The United States’ Perspective Of China And The South China Sea, Gaaret Marinelli Dec 2020

Refocusing The United States’ Perspective Of China And The South China Sea, Gaaret Marinelli

San Diego International Law Journal

There is a shift in world power that can be felt by world leaders and ordinary citizens alike, and its movement will realign the rest of the world. Since its rise to a great world power after World War II, the United States has maintained its position as the world’s predominant leader, both militarily and economically. However, this dominance is threatened by a formidable challenger. A rapidly ascending China is challenging the United States’ military and economic power, but the United States is not adequately positioned to meet this challenge. Some scholars theorize that China and the United States are …

Designing A Standard Assets Registration System To Reduce Corruption In Afghanistan: What Afghanistan Can Learn From Examining Model Assets Declaration Systems, Zalmay Mallyar Dec 2020

Designing A Standard Assets Registration System To Reduce Corruption In Afghanistan: What Afghanistan Can Learn From Examining Model Assets Declaration Systems, Zalmay Mallyar

San Diego International Law Journal

Corruption in Afghanistan has emerged as one the greatest challenges to strengthening national and subnational governance and rebuilding a transparent and accountable system public services. One way that corrupt actors in Afghanistan have perpetuated corrupt practices is through hiding assets. Currently, Afghanistan has no specific mechanism or system for implementing or overseeing the declaration of assets—even though it has committed to creating an assets declaration criteria system as a means to fight corruption under Article 154 of the Afghan Constitution, Article 12 of the Anti-Corruption Strategy act, and various international treaties. This paper recommends that that Afghanistan seek to create …

The Effects Of Visual Aids In Online Learning, Amaris Leal Nov 2020

The Effects Of Visual Aids In Online Learning, Amaris Leal

McNair Summer Research Program

Research has demonstrated the potential for increased distraction and decreased comprehension for material presented digitally (Gerow et al., 2010). Given the continued shift toward digital content and increase in online-only learning, examining ways to improve comprehension are important. Prior work has shown that visual aids can improve comprehension of material for learners, and thus may be a valuable tool to redress digital comprehension deficits (Bransford & Johnson, 1972; Majidi & Aydinlu, 2016). The present study examined the effect of visual aids in online reading comprehension. A between-subject experimental survey (N = 60) evaluated memory and comprehension in undergraduate students in …

Introduction To Asian American Studies: Final Zine Project (2), Jason Redlew, William Jonathan Brown, Joey Provost, Maiki Kawakami

Ethnic Studies Student Zines

Over the course of this class, we have examined different perspectives on historical events and learned about how these events have impacted minority lives. This careful examination allows us to be self-critical of both our actions and the actions of our country. Each week, we were tasked with reading a piece of literature that critiques a historical event or provides a different interpretation. Our goal was to take the message of each reading and represent it through a creative magazine article, known as a zine. As we began this project, we had some trouble comprehending the deeper meaning behind the …
