Introduction To Asian American Studies: Final Zine Project (3), Regina Gaffney, Jonny Mather, Conner Prendergast
Ethnic Studies Student Zines
Over the past few months, we have studied the importance of Asian American history. Specifically, the ideas of connecting: class, gender, sexuality, nationalism, war, colonialism and race to contemporary issues going on in the world today. The following is a collection of Zine format projects aimed at displaying key ideas in the research of American History. Each week contains new information and a different display format. Moreover, we have made connections to modern day issues in an attempt to demonstrate how learning from past events can influence decisions made in the future.

Ethnic Studies Student Zines
In our Fall 2020 Introduction to Asian American Studies class, small student cohorts were tasked with creating a zine page for the various concepts analyzed in class. We read many articles in relation to Asian American oppression, both globally and locally. This included topics such as the history of the Chinese Exclusion Act and the anti-Chinese movement, and the various racializations different Asian ethnicities faced. We read about the model minority myth and its prevalence after the Vietnam War, Korean War, and Cold War. Additionally, we discussed the militarization and radicalization of the United States' colonial projects in Hawai'i, Guam, …

Ethnic Studies Student Zines
For our History of Asian Americans project, we aimed to creatively showcase some of the important topics discussed in the readings throughout this course. Additionally, our group related these historical topics to modern day issues or personal experiences. This was particularly interesting due to the current events taking place this semester like COVID-19, BLM Movement, and the election. In our project, we strayed away from summaries and explanations as much as possible while still providing context. We aimed to use our creative and critical thinking to highlight certain underlying aspects of the readings we thought were important, but may not …

Ethnic Studies Student Zines
Asian Americans have faced a long heritage of exclusion and injustice in relation to race, class, gender, sexuality, colonialism, immigration, labor, and a myriad of other problems throughout their history, particularly during times of shifting demographics, economic crisis, or war. In today's society, these inequities go largely unnoticed and are not addressed as often as they should be. This zine is meant to bring those inequities to light and discuss the history of Asians in America. We cover a wide range of topics, from the Vietnam war, to Japanese concentration camps, to the “model minority” myth. Understanding the history of …

ABOUT US… We are a group of USD students studying Asian American history & politics. Over the course of the semester, we have studied histories of labor, migration, war, incarceration, and displacement. This course has allowed us to better understand the ways in which Asian American identity has emerged. This course has given us the tools necessary to explore Asian American history and to contextualize what we have learned so we can apply it to contemporary issues both within and outside of the United States. ABOUT OUR ZINE… In each of our weekly zines, we really focused on the significance …

Ethnic Studies Student Zines
This zine allowed us to confront the ways in which colonization and its historical implications play into modern race relations. This is especially evident in the ways bodies are valued and devalued based on social location, birthplace, and racial appearance. Our weekly zines confronted the direct interactions between colonial violence and individuals, as well as their communities. We also worked to intentionally contrast this to the western construction of whiteness, and pulled from historical and modern examples of how whiteness has been weaponized against Asian communities in order to further marginalize them. Adjacency to whiteness, however, has also been used …

Ethnic Studies Student Zines
Throughout this zine you will explore a variety of obstacles that Asian Americans have faced in regards to their immigration and acclimation into American society and culture. Over the last century, individuals from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa have either migrated to America in hopes of a better life, or have been forced out of their homes due to war conflicts or as a necessity for cheap labor. Despite the means of their arrival, Americans have historically maintained an imperialistic outlook that America is the superior country. While the white American believes he is saving these transpacific countries from …

The Innovation Winter Is Coming: How The U.S.-China Trade War Endangers The World, Kimberly A. Houser
The Innovation Winter Is Coming: How The U.S.-China Trade War Endangers The World, Kimberly A. Houser
San Diego Law Review
Massive amounts of data, increased computing power, and advances in technology have created the recent AI Spring. Some feel the continuation of this period of innovation in artificial intelligence is inevitable, but its future is in jeopardy due to the recent trade war between the United States and China. Although the United States spearheaded the globalization movement after WWII, it has shifted to a policy of protectionism and rejectionism. China, conversely, has begun to fill the gap that the United States has left in its wake with its withdrawal from multilateral trade agreements, rejection of the World Trade Organization, and …

California's Civil Grand Juries And Prison Conditions 2007-2017, Nkem Adeleye, Anne Richardson Oakes, Julian Killingley
San Diego Law Review
In this Article we evaluate the potential for California’s so-called civil grand juries to detect substandard prison conditions and maltreatment of inmates and make recommendations for improvement. We describe relevant reports by grand juries between 2007–2017 and evaluate the effectiveness of these in improving conditions in a representative sample of counties. We conclude that the civil grand jury is a potentially effective tool for oversight, but its effectiveness is hampered by competing duties, variable investigative methodologies, and lack of clear objectives for performance of its statutory duties.

The Construction Of Student Mathematical Identity And Its Relationship To Academic Achievement, Ann Trescott
The Construction Of Student Mathematical Identity And Its Relationship To Academic Achievement, Ann Trescott
Dissertations
The California university and state college systems (UC and CSU) are committed to accepting a diverse student body. Although there has been some growth in the percentage of minority students admitted each year, a low number of minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged students meet minimum entrance requirements. For example, in 2018, only 33% of socioeconomically disadvantaged African American students and 39% Hispanic/Latinx students who graduated from California public high schools met minimum UC/CSU requirements (CDE, 2019).
Explanations for ineligibility include the fact that many high school students have not completed the requisite mathematics classes due in part to the inequitable practice …
Institutional Logics And The Double Bottom Line: A Study Of Chikum Microfinance Bank Limited, Daniel Anyanwu
Institutional Logics And The Double Bottom Line: A Study Of Chikum Microfinance Bank Limited, Daniel Anyanwu
Dissertations
Microfinance institutions (MFIs) serve a social mission, while also having to focus on financial sustainability. Microfinance emerged as an alternative to traditional aid to the poor and aims to help alleviate poverty through providing them with financial services. MFIs can be self-sustainable and even profitable through income generating activities. This twin goal of commercial viability and social mission has generated much scholarly interest in the competition between two seemingly incompatible logics of action. Assumptions about the incompatibility of profit and mission motives have dominated the literature and led to a neglect of how some MFIs may be successful in integrating …
The Glass Ceiling: Exploring The Leadership Journey Of Men And Women In High-Tech, Shelia Faye Krueger
The Glass Ceiling: Exploring The Leadership Journey Of Men And Women In High-Tech, Shelia Faye Krueger
Dissertations
The literature is replete with evidence of the proliferation of women entering into the workplace, their remarkable progress in attaining higher education, their overrepresentation in professional and management roles, and their placement in CEO leadership positions in certain high-profile S&P 500 global companies. Yet women continue to be noticeably underrepresented in leadership roles, especially in high tech companies. Through the lenses of social constructivist and feminist theories of gender stereotypes, social/gender roles, and role congruity expectations, this instrumental case study was conducted to gain insight into the reasons women are underrepresented in leadership roles in high tech and the ways …

Energy Efficiency And Distributed Solar Energy Targeted To Underserved Communities: Perspectives On The Illinois Future Energy Jobs Act, Leroy C. (Lee) Paddock
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
This Article focuses on one of the most comprehensive state laws adopted to date, aimed at significantly advancing energy efficiency and distributed solar generation in underserved communities, the Illinois Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA). It begins by examining what constitutes energy justice and then discusses the disproportionate burdens and benefits related to energy production and use that underserved communities must deal with on a day-to-day basis. The Article then turns to a review of FEJA with a particular emphasis on the critical role community organizations played in designing, negotiating, and implementing the law. These efforts represent important development in both …

Irena At 10: Post Paris Transitions And Energy Diplomacy Beyond Opec, The Energy Charter Treaty, And The Coronavirus, Nadia B. Ahmad
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
In understanding the post Paris energy transitions, this Article analyzes the intergovernmental organization, IRENA, as a means of working toward sustainable energy. Clean energy is an alternative to carbon emissions from fossil fuel extraction and generation. This Article looks at the formation and rise of IRENA and how the silencing of the climate controversy may continue to improve its efficacy. In other words, IRENA has steered away from the controversy of climate change i.e. climate denial. This Article will proceed in five parts. Part I explores the formation of IRENA and the positive outcomes of renewable energy deployment. Part II …

The Ninth Circuit Expands The Mining Law's Extralateral Rights Doctrine To Pegmatite Dikes, Mahdi Ibrahim, Judge Robert C. Coates
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
What happens when a miner strikes gold (metaphorically and sometimes literally speaking) under someone else’s land? As the Latin maxim states, “cuius est solum, eius est usque ad coelum et ad inferos,” which translates to “whoever owns [the] soil, [it] is theirs all the way [up] to Heaven and [down] to Hell.” It would seem the answer to who has a right to minerals below their property would be straight forward based on this Latin maxim. However, this is not truly the case. Over the last century, courts have expanded the idea of “extralateral rights” and allowed an adjacent landowner …

Student Success Coaching: Intentional Training For Professional And Program Development, Andrea Aduna
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
The purpose of my research was to improve the effectiveness of the Student Success Coaching Program’s retention and outreach of students on academic probation and midterm deficiencies. The research question is: How can I professionally develop the student success coaches, or peer coaches, to better engage with their nontraditional students? Research suggests that coaching programs must first define the unique support they provide students to be fully proactive. How can diversity and inclusion training add to the effectiveness of the program and the coach’s impact on students throughout the academic semester? The significance of my research was the value of …
Exploring The Narratives Of Underrepresented Southeast Asian Students In Higher Education, Donna Soukantouy
Exploring The Narratives Of Underrepresented Southeast Asian Students In Higher Education, Donna Soukantouy
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
In my study, I examined how underrepresented Southeast Asian (SEA) students, specifically Cambodians, Hmong, and Laotian students, navigate college by exploring their personal narratives. The research question I used to inform my study was how could I represent and better support underrepresented SEA students in the surrounding San Diego, California colleges and universities? I found that the focus groups I facilitated contributed to meaningful engagement. Oftentimes SEA students are never in the same room with other students like themselves. Through interviews, interactive activities, and dialogue, I found that we need to provide spaces, platforms, and workshops for SEA students to …

Paving The Way: Enhancing The Transfer Admission Practices At The University Of San Diego, Andrew Alsoraimi-Espiritu
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
The purpose of this study is to examine how the University of San Diego’s (USD) Office of Undergraduate Admission can better serve prospective students from local community colleges by striving towards a Transfer Receptive Culture (Jain, Herrera, Bernal, & Solórzano, 2011). Using my positionality as an admissions counselor at USD, I explored the following question with current and prospective transfer students, as well as local community college partners: how can I enhance the practices of my department to better support transfer students during the pretransfer phase at USD? My findings indicate that the transfer path to USD is hectic and …
