Adjacency, as used in the Law of the Sea, implies a defined area beyond the territorial sea applying to the superadjacent waters, the seabedand the subsoil. It also implies a relationship to the land. This paper is an examination of adjacency as a concept with particular emphasis placed on the possibilities of establishing the outer limits of an adjacent area. The concept of adjacency is addressed from historical,oceanographic, biological, geological and legal perspectives. The Impact On The Navy Of Public Concern With Control Of Pollution Of The Seas By Oil, Robert Augustus Fisher

It is difficult at best to evaluate the biological and chemical damages of oil pollution, but the physical effects are graphically evident in the blackened beaches and coastlines around the world and in the floating "tar-balls" found in mid-ocean. It is this dramatically visible effect that has stirred public concern. Thus, prevention of such damage is high on the list of priorities for both national and international concern. In the face of the ever increasing potential for pollution, President Nixon has pledged that federal agencies will take the lead in pollution abatement programs.

An investigation of the effects of radioactive waste disposal into the oceans pursued by an examination of the hazards involved, the present sources of radioactive wastes and future prospects. The longevity of many radioactive elements, coupled with the awesome consequences to which even a slight miscalculation may lead, are convincing arguments for the most conservative approach to the problem of disposal of radioactive wastes. Present day disposal of radioactive wastes in the oceans, while significant, have not yet had major discernible effects on man or marine life. The Concentration And Distribution Of Particulate Iron In Waters Of The Northwestern Atlantic Ocean And Caribbean Sea, Peter Robin Betzer

Measurements of particulate iron concentrations have been carried out on samples from the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Water samples were collected in 30-1 Niskin bottles; iron analyses were done by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The average of 319 iron determinations on shallow open-ocean water (0-300 m) was 0.142 ± .146 μg/1; the average of 165 determinations on samples deeper than 500 m and shallower than 1000 m from the bottom was 0.137 ± .091 μg/1. Benthic Lipids Of Narragansett Bay Fatty Acids And Hydrocarbons, John William Farrington

The intent of this investigation was to expand our knowledge of the biogeochemistry of fatty acids and hydrocarbons in recent sediments. Several techniques for extracting fatty acids from sediments were evaluated and saponification was found to give the best yield. Samples of sediments, sewage effluents, and benthic animals were extracted to obtain the lipid fraction. The lipid extracts were analyzed for fatty acids and hydrocarbons by gas chromatography. Lipolytic activity in the sediments was demonstrated using tributyrin and olive soil assays.

Detached fruits of the “lutescent”, high-beta and ghost tomatoes were treated with either dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or 2-(4-chlorophenyl-thio)-triethylamine hydrochloride (CPTA) to study the biosynthetic origin of β-carotene in the tomato fruit. When mature “lutescent” tomato fruits (Stage 3) were treated with DMSO the synthesis of the acyclic carotenoids phytoene, phytofluene, ζ-carotene and lypocene was inhibited; the synthesis of β-carotene and the other cyclic carotenes was not affected. In less mature fruits (Stage 2), however, DMSO treatment inhibited synthesis of both acyclic and cyclic carotenoids.
