Fluoride In Sea Water: Distribution In The North Atlantic Ocean And Formation Of Ion Pairs With Sodium, Gerard Roland Miller Jr.

Two problems concerning fluoride in sea water were considered in order to advance the understanding of the chemistry of fluoride in the marine environment. Anomalously high fluoride concentrations have been observed at some locations in the North Atlantic Ocean. If these anomalous concentrations continued to exist they could provide an opportunity to examine some of the geochemical processes of fluoride in sea water. Considerations of the geochemistry and physical chemistry of fluoride in sea water are hindered by an inadequate account of the interactions of fluoride and sodium.

Cation exchange capacity measurements, performed before and after removal of the humic acid fraction from various Narragansett Bay sediments, indicate that low concentrations of these organic substances strongly influence the ability of the sediment to react with metal ions. Atomic absorption and spectrophotometric methods have been developed which allow quantitative determinations of the extent of reactions between a naturally occurring humic acid and iron in artificial seawater. The results indicate that different humic acid-iron complexes are formed with varying solubilities depending on the humic acid-iron ratio used in the experiment. Twelve sound types, spectrographically analyzed from recordings of captive and wild grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), included continuous and pulsed sounds. All continuous sounds showed sub-harmonic energy, and emphasized frequencies between 100 and 800 Hz. Click type sounds had energy to greater than 60 kHz, and were repeated at rates up to 1500/sec.

A behavioral significance is hypothesized for most sounds.

Two types of reactions were used to study the effect of substituents (CH₃, OCH₃) on the condensation of 5(6) substituted benzofurazan 1-oxides (1) with (methylthio)-2-propanone (BFO Reaction, A), and 4- substituted o-quinone dioximes (2) with pyruvaldhyde (OQD Reaction, B). The nitrogen atom is an electrophile in reaction A and nucleophile in reaction B.

The 'cognitive model' in this treatise is proposed as an original method of understanding, describing and explaining the acute grief process and outcome. The model suggests that the primary impact of a sudden death event is upon the survivor's conceptual frame-of-reference. This differs from the traditional psychoanalytic view of mourning which emphasizes the emotional impact as being foremost.

The effects of the Maillard reaction on the biological activity of insulin as a hormone, and on the utilization of egg albumin as a source of amino acids have been studied.

In order to know the number, the position, and the effect of the glucose residues that bind a protein, crystalline zinc insulin was stored with ¹⁴C-glucose at 37° and 68% R.H. for four months. The unreacted sugar was separated from insulin in a Bio-Gel column and the bound radioactivity counted. A knowledge of nutrient concentration levels in the sediments, using nutrient profile as an indicator of pollution, can be a revealing and important factor in defining the water quality of the Bay. The intent of this study was to examine the nutrient distribution of nitrogen and phosphoru3 in sediment cores of Narragansett Bay. The findings would serve to indicate the effect of man's activities on the r-ate of estuarine eutrophication and to interpret the pollution history of the Bay.

Measurements Of Hydrocarbon, Phthalic Acid, And Phthalic Acid Ester Concentrations In Environmental Samples, Terry L. Wade

A method which allows the measurement of the concentration of hydrocarbons and phthalic acid or phthalic acid esters in a single sea water sample is described. The average hydrocarbon concentration for 36 sea surface microlayer samples, approximately the top 300 microns was 94 μg/l with a range of <4 to 559 μg/l. The hydrocarbon concentration for 36 subsurface samples, approximately 20 cm below the surface, averaged 51 μg/l, with a range of <2 to 248 μg/l. Comparisons of sample pairs, sea surface microlayer and subsurface from each station, reveal that 71% have greater hydrocarbon concentrations in the sea surface microlayer than in the subsurface.

The average phthalic acid concentration for 10 sea surface microlayer samples was 0.9 μg/l (range of 0.1 to 3.2 μg/l), while the average value for 7 subsurface samples was 0.4 μg/l (range of <0.1 to 1.0 μg/l). The average di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) concentration for 3 sea surface microlayer samples was 4.0 μg/l (range for 3.2 to 4.6 μg/l) and the average concentration for 3 subsurface samples was 1.3 μg/l (range of 0.7 to 2.5 μg/l). All but one of the samples measured for phthalic acid and DEHP had greater concentrations in the sea surface microlayer than in the subsurface.

Pelagic tar was found to be a possible sources of petroleum hydrocarbons found in the Sargasso Sea waters. This …

The purpose of this paper is to examine aspects of a Coastal Zone Plan as it applies to the Republic of Tanzania with its differences from and similarities to, the United States coastal zone planning experience.
