Characterization Of The Fibrotic Lesion In Dibutyltin-Induced Experimental Liver Injury, Jeannee Karen Yermakoff

Administration of di-n-butyltin dichloride (DBT) by oral intubation has been shown to produce hepatic fibrosis in rats. Unlike post-necrotic experimental fibrosis, DBT-induced hepatic fibrosis progresses from inflammation and biliary injury. The relationship of histological changes to various parameters of collagen synthesis and liver injury were investigated. In vitro collagen synthesis was determined by incubation of liver biopsies with labeled praline and subsequent digestion with protease-free collagenase. Prolyl hydroxylase activity in liver homogenates was taken as a second parameter reflecting the rate of collagen synthesis. DBT administration (20 mg/kg/day, p.o.) produced a progressive increase in both in vitro collagen synthesis and …

A Mechanism Of Action Of Gold In Rheumatoid Arthritis. A Biochemical And Morphological Investigation Of The Direct Effect Of Gold Sodium Thiomalate (Gst) On Human Synovial Cells In Culture, Ronald Lee Goldberg

Gold sodium thiomalate (GST) effects on cultured rheumatoid synovial cells were used as a model to investigate a mechanism which can explain clinical benefits gained by patients from gold therapy. Synovial tissue obtained from patients with rheumatoid arthritis who were undergoing reconstructive joint surgery was used to obtain explant culture of synovial cells. The experiments described were performed on growing monolayer cultures during the second to fifth passages. Synovial cells were exposed to GST at pharmacologically relevant concentrations (10-100 uM). The Effects Of Hue And Lightness Upon Color Preference And Their Relationship To Five Manifest Needs, Elaine Puntch Gelineau

A three-part investigation was conducted in an effort to begin to understand the psychological meaning of color preference behavior. Phase 1 used a Q-sort technique to assess intraindividual stability of preference judgments over a five-week interval. Phase 2 used principal components analysis to discern the manner in which preference judgments were being made. Phase 3 used canonical correlation analysis to evaluate a hypothesized relationship between color preference and personality; with five scales from the Personality Research Form, purported to measure manifest needs, serving as the criterion measure. Investigation of the biological basis of anxiety is hampered by the lack of an appropriate animal model for research purposes. There are no known drugs that cause anxiety in laboratory animals. Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) produces intense anxiety in human volunteers (Rodin, 1958; Rodin and Calhoun, 1970). Therefore, it was the major objective of this dissertation to test the hypothesis that the discriminative stimulus produced by PTZ in the rat was related to its anxiogenic action in man. It was also an objective to suggest the neurochemical basis for the discriminative stimulus property of PTZ through appropriate drug interactions. In an operant …

The trace element content of well-preserved fossil carbonates offers the best opportunity to estimate temporal changes in the chemical composition of seawater. Previous studies of cation uptake by cultured carbonate-secreting organisms allow changes in Sr/Ca and Na/Ca ratios in aragonite, and Sr/Ca ratios in calcite, to be directly related to changes in the seawater ratios. To achieve internal consistency in the paleochemical interpretation, these ratios were measured in discrete layers of the aragonitic bivalve Mercenaria and the calcitic bivalve Pecten, dating back to 15 my ago, and in the tests of deep sea fossil planktonic foraminifera dating back to …

From the first failure of the Dorchester Company at Stage Fort to the subsequent glories of the schooner fleets, the story has been told in fact, fiction, poetry, and painting. The literature brings to life the beauty of the place, the dangers of the sea,and the character building of those who contested life in the North Atlantic. At the present time there does not exist any publication or other communication medium, directed specifically to a Latin American readership, that reports thoroughly and accurately on the fisheries and other marine-related developments in Latin America. Problems of language, physical size of the area, financing, personnel, bureaucracy and politics, among others, have always proved to be overwhelming. This study pertains to the problem of international activity in an area of political and ecological sensitivity, the Southern Ocean. Of specific concern is the question of which group of states should have a voice in management of Antarctic krill. The niche filled by krill within the ecosystem and its potential as a fishery is discussed. Past international practice has been affected for the most part by the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 which has maintained a somewhat exclusive "club" of nations as the overseers of Antarctic activity. A territorial ban on beach and sand removal in the U. S. Virgin Islands has resulted in a search for alternative sources. Insecure extra-territorial reserves and high shipping costs have made sand importation prohibitive. Recent surveys conducted in 1977 by the U. S. Geological Survey identified several nearshore sources of aggregate adjacent to the island of St. Thomas. In a 1978 workshop jointly conducted by the Government of the Virgin Islands and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration various alternatives were presented for sand extraction. Two alternatives are examined using a cost benefit approach.
