Since the Mental Health Service Acts of 1963 and 1965, increasing numbers of psychiatric patients have been discharged back into communities for continuing treatment. Many communities have reacted negatively to this influx of ex-patients. Since the nature of the public's reaction affects the establishment of community facilities as well as the course of ex-patients' stays in the community, it is important for mental health professionals to better understand public reaction to mental patients.

Cell Proliferation And Collagen Synthesis In Explant Cultures Of Arteriosclerotic Rabbit Aorta, Douglas Otto Fisher

The rate of cell proliferation and the ratio of type I/III collagen synthesized by aorta organ culture and cultured smooth muscle cells (SMC) was determined in cells derived from rabbits with injury induced (daily epinephrine and thyroxine administration) arteriosclerosis and increased vascular collagen synthesis. Tissue was taken from medial smooth muscle of normal and diseased rabbits and incubated in organ or cell culture systems with 2, 3- ³H-proline, ascorbate and beta-aminopropionitrile. Collagen types were separated by SDS-polyacrylamide electrophoresis and CMC-chromatography and quantitated radiometrically. licroscopic observation at 12 days in culture and ³H-thyrnidine incorporation at 18 days in culture …

A fates model has been developed which tracks both the surface and subsurface oil. The approach used to spread, drift, and evaporate the surface slick is similar to that in most other oil spill models. The ultraviolet absorbance data from experiments conducted at constant pH, T(Fe), and variable [B(OH)₃] were used to determine Fe^*B^B1 and Fe*B^B2, the stability constants of FeB(OH)₄²⁺ and Fe(B(OH₄)²⁺, respectively, in a 0.7 NaClO₄ solution at 25*C. The data were analyzed taking into account the absorbances due to Fe³⁺ and FeOH²⁺. Statistical relationships between a set of physical and chemical variates and a vector of species abundances are explored with the objective of examining the influence of waste disposal on the benthic macrofaunal assemblages of the New York Bight Apex area. The problem of microenvironmental variability is handled by post collection stratification of samples based on the physical characteristics of each grab sample, rather than classical spatial strata definitions. Three physical variables used to define strata are: mean particle size, percent organic matter, and total concentration of heavy metals. Fuelwood biomass production was determined for three coppice origin, even-aged, mixed-hardwood stands growing on moderately well-drained sites in Washington County, Rhode Island. A total of 93 trees including mixed-oaks and red maple, ranging from 7.6 to 30.5 cm in diameter were destructively sampled.

Sample trees were felled, sectioned and separated into two components: stemwood and branchwood. Total green weight by component was recorded for each tree in the field. Components were subsampled to permit oven-dry weight and specific gravity determinations. Although no relationship was found between specific gravity and rate of diameter growth, specific gravities for black oak species were …
