This research project is undertaken to explore the relationship between social problem solving and the academic and social performance of high school youth. Psychologists have stated that social problem solving is an important component of psychosocial competence. Similarly, both theory and research have linked social problem solving to overt behavioral adjustment to school in populations of young children. In this study, the broader notion that academic and social performance in high school will be strongly related to social problem solving was tested.

A literature review showed that since the discovery of the endogenous opioid peptide, Beta-endorphin, and the fact that it is secreted along with ACTH as part of the stress response, much investigation has been directed toward determination of the role of this substance in autoanalgesia which is known to result from a variety of stressors. ACTH (and presumably, Beta-endorphin) are known to be secreted in very high amounts following stress in 24-hour adrenalectominzed. Recently, an animal model of depression, which appeared to be sensitive to clinically effective antidepressant treatments, was described by Porsolt et al (1978b). The model was derived from the observation that rats forced to swim in inescapable warm (25°C) water for fifteen minutes become immobile after some time. Immobility was characterized by animals floating in an upright position, with only their heads above water. When retested twenty-four hours later, rats showed significantly longer lengths of immobility than naive controls. The investigators labeled this response "behavioral despair". The utility of high pressure liquid chromatography as a routine method to detect animal fats in vegetable margarines on the basis of sterol content was investigated. Cholesterol, which makes up almost 100% of the total sterol in animal fats, constitutes only 0-4% of the total sterols in vegetable oils.

The major phytosterols in vegetable oils currently used for margarine production are B-sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol. Brassicasterol is less conunon but in rapeseed oil it is present in high proportion. The minor phytosterols are: ~ 5 -avenasterol, ~ 7 -stiqmasterol, 7 ~ -avenasterol, 24-methyl cholest-7-enol and cholesterol.

Since quality control for adulteration in meat is very important, the vertical plate polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic technique was studied for the detection and identification of cook ed and canned species extracts.

Meat samples from beef, pork, lamb and horse were heated for one hour from 65-75°C at intervals of about 5°C. The Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Program is entering its second decade. Created by the Rhode Island General Assembly on 1971, the Coastal Resources Management Council adopted in 1977 a management program that was approved by the Federal Office of Coastal Zone Management in May, 1978. The state has been receiving $1 million annually in federal aid, matched by nearly a quarter of a million dollars in state funds, to implement its Coastal Management Program.

The Rhode Island Program has been intensely examined during the past nine years by federal evaluators, environmental groups, and in-house program consultants. These evaluations have …

Well over a ton of metals such as cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, and zinc (dissolved in industrial effluents and sewage treatment plant discharges) enters Narragansett Bay on a daily basis. The Bay also supports a tremendous hard shell clam fishery with annual landings exceeding six million dollars. Levels of copper in upper Narragansett Bay water suggest that productivity of clam populations in areas currently open to commercial shellfishing may be impaired and that considerable economic loss.es result.

The feasibility of using potato wastes as substrate for or single cell protein (SCP) and extracellular enzyme production by Pleurotus ostreatus was· studied in submerged culture.

Cell mass yield and enzyme production of P. ostreatus we re studied as a function of (1) substrate concentration, (2) source of nitrogen, (3) temperature, (4) pH and (5) the addition of sodium bisulfite on the medium. The fermentation process was carried out to batch cultures in 250 ml flasks . This study utilizes the perspective of the sociology of knowledge to examine the interrelationships between the characterization of woman in the utopian genre and attitudes toward woman in those Western societies where this literary form flourished. The history of the genre from early Greece to the present century traces interconnections and dependencies of form and intent. This thesis addresses certain problems in chemical oceanography that pertain to. the chemical speciation of transition metals dissolved in seawater. Knowledge of the chemical speciation of dissolved trace metals is important for understanding their role in various biogeochemical processes. Historically, the concept that dissolved organic matter (DOM) may complex metal ions in seawater has often influenced interpretation of observations in the oceanography disciplines. Unfortunately, the extent of metal complexation and the nature of the organic ligands involved are poorly understood. This thesis involves an investigation of the interaction between DOM and dissolved transition metals, particularly copper, in marine waters.
