The purpose of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of calcium leucovorin in normal subjects and in patients undergoing High-Dose methotrexame therapy for the treatment of neoplastic disease. By characterizing the disposition of leucovorin it was hoped that the efficacy of the aethotrexate therapy might be improved, while at the same time, the incidence of toxicity could be diminished.

An assay for the separation and quantification of leucovorin in serum was developed. The reduced folate vas extracted from serum using reverse-phase chromatographic minicolumns and a paired-ion reagent. Leucovorin was eluted from this system in methanol and evaporated to dryness …

Effects Of Different Mixing Schedules On Phytoplankton, Zooplankton And Nutrients In Marine Microcosms, Candace A. Oviatt

An experiment was carried out with different mixing schedules in marine microcosms. Continuous mixing resulted in higher chlorophyll concentrations, lower nutrient concentrations and lower zooplankton biomass than no mixing. No mixing caused water-column stratifications of chlorophyll and nutrients, as well as of organisms such as flagellates and rotifers adapted to low-mixing regimes. The most dramatic result was the low biomass of zooplankton in the continuously mixed microcosms and the high biomass of zooplankton in the unmixed microcosm.

Dinoflagellate Abundance In The Laguna Botos, Poás Volcano, Costa Rica, Paul E. Hargraves, Roxana Víquez M.

Phytoplankton of the Botos lagoon of Poás volcano is dominated by dinoflagellates. The two species of greatest abundance in March 1979 were Peridinium incospicuum Lemm. and P. volzii Lemm, which represented 96% of total cells. The identity of these species was confirmed by electron microscopy. Both species are cosmopolitan. Without further resealch it is premature to compare Botos Lagoon with similar lakes in Central America.

There is, currently, a flurry of activity as the present Administration, along with the United States Department of Energy and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, struggles to develop a comprehensive national program for the management and disposal of radioactive wastes. The first section of the paper deals with some of the inherent technical issues. This includes a review of the origin of nuclear wastes; the hazards of the wastes, including impacts upon the biological environment; and the extent of the state of the art for disposing of such wastes. In 1973, the New England Fishery Development Program (NEFDP), an industry/government partnership was formed to offset a portion of the economic decline of the New England fishing industry while encouraging the development of underutilized species and nontraditional fishery products. The purpose of this paper is to examine one of the NEFDP's development projects and to comment on its apparent success. This paper attempts to determine if domestic processors can be expected to produce whiting fillet blocks that can compete in the market place with foreign imports. On March 23, 1975 oil leaked out of an oil retention pit at a drilling site owned by L.O. Ward. Ward was an Oklahoma wildcatter and the owner and operator of L.O. Ward Oil and Gas Operations. The spilled oil ran down a gully and into Boggie Creek. Boggie Creek is a tributary of the navigable Arkansas River. The discharge of oil from Ward's property therefore amounted to the discharge of a harmful quantity of oil within the meaning of Section 1321 (b)(3) of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act and also a harmful quantity within the meaning of regulations …

Is it possible to provide adequate protection for the Georges Bank ecosystem as oil and gas exploration begins? The fishing industry and environmentalists say "no," but it is the resource managers who are faced with the task of predicting, assessing and mitigating impacts of development while at the same time managing resources and protecting fishery habitats. Much of this responsibility falls within NOAA; however, legislative mandates and agency responsibilities and goals mean that several other federal agencies are involved as well. The first step in redeveloping the Nova Scotia fishery is the restructuring and rebuilding of the various Nova Scotia commercial fishing fleets. In this paper, the evolution of the Nova Scotia fishery and fleets is outlined as background for discussion of concerns, issues, and conflicts of the various participants involved in determining the future structureand composition of the Nova Scotia fleet mix. It is concluded that whatsoever the structure and composition of the fleet, there remains the need to protect a critical balance among the various sectors of the Nova Scotia fishery.

AlI 74 ppm (1 ppm = 1.77 E 14 moles CO₂) of anthropogenic CO₂ can be accounted for in atmosphere (45 ppm) and ocean (29 ppm) by a simple "diffusive / descending-water" model. 3.8 ppm remain in the mixed layer (at equilibrium), 19.1 have diffused into intermediate waters (at 1.3 cm² / sec). and 5.7 ppm have been advected by the North Atlantic Deep, and the Antarctic Intermediate and Bottom Waters. The diffusive uptake must be driven by a realistic "interrupted exponential" atmospheric driving function, with 23 years of no growth between the World Wars. The …
