The kinetic parameters of testicular steroid synthesizing enzymes involved in the Δ₄ and Δ₅ pathway s for testosterone production were examined in four species. Testis microsomes were prepared as a source of steroidogenic enzymes. Radiolabeled steroid-intermediates were used as substrates and products were separated by thin layer chromatography. Michaelis constants, (k_0.5), and V_max values were determined for 3 B-Hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase (EC 1.1.1.145), 17α-Hydroxylase (EC 1.14.99.9) and C₁₇-C₂₀ Lyase reactions using Δ₄ and Δ₅ substrates.

Moral development has been conceptualized in terms of simple and complex stage models. This study was aimed at comparing and evaluating these two models to determine which most adequately addresses the construct. Seventy college undergraduates were administered the Defining Issues Test (DIT) as a measure of moral reasoning. An analysis of their DIT protocols for response variation showed that a full range of reasoning was used to address each moral situation, supporting a complex stage orientation. A practicing planner needs the capability to solve quantitative problems. No planning curriculum can prepare its students for every kind of quantitative problem they can conceivably encounter. In my own field, renewable energy planning, some of the most important problems have emerged within the past few years: shadow calculations for solar access, tax incentive calculations for small hydroelectric site redevelopment, etc. Planners in this field are turning to powerful programmable calculator/printer systems as a means of coping.

Chapman Swamp is a 685 ha freshwater wetland complex in Westerly, Rhode Island. Seventy percent of the wetland area is forested. 17.9% is scrub-shrub, 7.0% is aquatic bed and 1.3% is emergent.

The peat stratigraphy in the wetland is composed of wood, reed-sedge and moss peats. Wood peat is typically low ash, reed-sedge peat is variable in ash content depending on proximity to a fluvial sediment source and moss peat is high-ash in basal sections due to contamination from eolian sources in the early Holocene. The most common stratigraphic relationship is wood peat overlying moss or reed-sedge peat. The maximum …

The kinetics and redox chemistry of iron in the marine environment was studied in three investigations: (1) the analytical techniques for the measurement of iron, (2) the kinetics of Fe(II) oxygenation, and (3) the chemistry of iron in an anoxic marine environment.

The bathophenanthroline method proved to be inadequate for the measurement of Fe(II) in the presence of Fe(III) due to Fe(III) reduction in the absence of a reducing reagent. A ferric sulfate complex method was developed to measure Fe(III) in the presence of Fe(II) at 303 run. This method obeys Beer-Lambert law for (Fe(III)) up to 10 μM with …

Serum ionized calcium has Ions been viewed as the physiologically active form of calcium yet the paucity of studies concerned with this response measure is apparent and may be related to the high cost of modern potentiometric instrumentation. Reducing the cost factor was approached by integrating an inexpensive static-type calcium ion-specific electrode into a fabricated plastic electrode chamber. Characterization of the electrode system was performed by elucidating the optimum parameters for electrode use in serum samples. The speciation of copper determines its chemical and biological interactions in the marine environment. Several methods have been employed in this work to examine the speciation of copper. The availability of total copper to measurement by anodic stripping voltammetry has been examined in coastal and open ocean waters in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean. In deep waters approximately 75% of the total copper is detected by anodic stripping voltammetry. In near surface and coastal water greater than 90% of the total copper is bound in species that are not detected by ASV. The availability of copper in coastal waters for uptake …
