Sediment populations were tested for metal resistance by the spread plate method on Trypticase Soy Agar (TSA) amended with 50 ug/ml of Hg, Cd, Pb, Sn, or Zn. Those metals that were found in high concentration in Pawtuxet River sediment (i.e., Pb, Sn, and Zn) were less inhibitory to the sediment population than either Hg or Cd, present only in low amounts. Metal content of the Pawtuxet River sediment was determined by atomic absorbtion spectrophotometry. Several sediment isolates were selected and resistance patterns to the five metals were determined by the replicate method. A wide range of resistance was found …

The transformation from carcinoma in situ to invasive carcinoma occurs when tumor cells traverse extracellular matracies allowing them to move into parenchymal tissues. Tumor invasion may be aided by the secretion of collagen and elastin degrading proteases from tumor and tumor-associated cells. In this study ~ the production of Type I and Type V collagen degrading activities and elastolytic activities by DLD-1 human colon carcinoma cells, B16-F10 murine melanoma cells, and normal human dermal fibroblasts was examined. DLD-1 cells and normal fibroblasts produced similarly high levels of collagenolytic activity. DLD-1 cells also produced high levels of elastinolytic activity; this activity …

Binding Affinity Of Beta-Adrenoceptors In Atria Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic And Normal Rats, Edward James Mckenna

Diabetes mellitus is associated with a reduced responsiveness to catecholamines. The reduced responsiveness may be attributable to a reduction in beta-adrenoceptor sensitivity to catecholamines. Radioligand binding studies demonstrate that chemically-induced diabetes reduces beta-adrenoceptor number without altering betaadrenoceptor drug binding affinities. The present study re-examines the effect of chronic (10 weeks) streptozotocin-induced diabetes in the rat on beta-adrenoceptor drug binding affinity, using pharmacological techniques, to test the results of the binding studies. This thesis examines the integration of Eskimo norms and roles in Northwest Alaska, with particular emphasis on the changing roles of women. The hypothesis states that changes in Eskimo norms and role relations are influenced by Western social factors that impede traditional Eskimo adaptive processes. The principal methodology utilized was participant observation, which involved observation and participation in the full range of summer subsistence fishing, hunting and gathering activities and other elements of women's daily social and economic life in a small Eskimo village, Kiana, during the summer of 1976. Thermal gradient measurements, consolidation tests, and pore water compositions from the Mariana Trough imply that water is moving through the sediments in areas with less than about 100 m of sediment cover. The maximum advection rates implied by the thermal measurements and consolidation tests may be as high as 10⁻⁵ cm s⁻¹ but are most commonly in the range of 1 to 5×10⁻⁶ cm s⁻¹. Theoretical calculations of the effect of the highest advection rates upon carbonate dissolution indicate that dissolution may be impeded or enhanced (depending upon the direction of flow) by a factor …

Three-Dimensional Analysis Of Turning Within Airborne Bird Flocks, Harold Pomeroy

The three-dimensional structure of airborne pigeon flocks was monitored over time. Flocks changed both in overall shape, and in compactness during the execution of turns. Flight speeds of the flocks were sensitive to the vertical rather than the horizontal component of a turn. The compactness of flocks did not seem to change in relation to speed maintained during turns or sharpness of turns.

The cues to which birds responded in adjusting their flight paths may be important in determining flock compactness. Birds within flocks responded to each other's position and maintained positions close to each other. In a flock groups. …

In 1976, the United States enacted the Fishery Conservation and Management Act (FCMA), presently referred to as the Magnuson Fishery conservation and Management Act (MFCMA). The legislation is a complex and detailed document establishing for the first time a national fishery policy. The Act also created an organizational structure designed to implement this new policy. Since the Act's implementation, there has been a great deal of controversy, especially generated by the commercial fishermen. This paper focuses on Iceland, primarily because of its great economic dependency on its fisheries resources, unlike the United States.

Membrane Filter Method For Enumeration Of Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus From Environmental Waters, Steven J. Lacroix, Victor J. Cabelli

A membrane filter method was developed and evaluated for the quantitative recovery of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus from environmental waters. The procedure utilized a mineral medium, with sodium acetate and potassium nitrate as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. Formic acid was included to enhance the recovery of A. calcoaceticus and to inhibit background growth. The medium was incubated for 46 h at 30°C, after which fermentation and cytochrome oxidase tests were performed on the colonies as they appeared on the membrane. Background microbial growth decreased on the average by 1.77 orders of magnitude. An essentially quantitative recovery relative to that on …
