Scrimshaw, as an art form, had just recently risen a few notches above the state of obscurity. There are still millions of Americans who probably know nothing about it. Inextricably linked with the whaling industry for years, the scrimshaw industry has recently undergone a remarkable transition. When whaling ended in the United States, scrimshaw moved ashore and some people found out that there was a great deal of money to be made in the scrimshaw business. but with the passage of the Marine Mammals Protection Act in 1973, scrimshanders found themselves being tightly regulated by the Federal government. This report will investigate the feasibility of large-scale artificial floating islands, to solve problems posed by over-population and environment-burdening activities in coastal areas. The investigation will focus on the historic, technical, utilizable and legal aspects of artificial floating islands. Although this report exemplifies artificial floating islands developed for offshore cities, electrical power generation and basing for the military, its content is applicable to any offshore floating development.

The signing of the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) Treaty was the maturation of an idea that was born thirty-six years ago. That treaty placed into effect the 200 mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). A universal 200 mile EEZ could be a death knell for the high-seas fishing fleets we know today as the majority of the major fishing grounds lie within 200 miles of the coast. The Soviet Union presently has the largest fishing fleet in the world and will perhaps feel the largest impact from the treaty signing. This paper intends to evaluate …

The carotenoid pigments are very conspicuous in nature, owing to their yellow to red hues, and occur without exception in photosynthetic tissue. They are responsible for the colour in some species of yeast, bacteria and fungi as well as many vegetables and fruits. Although animals are incapable of de novo synthesis, they are able to deposit the carotenoid pigment as absorbed or with some alteration of the basic structure. Thus, the red to yellow colour in the flesh, skin, shell or exoskeleton of salmon, lobster, crab, prawn, carp, flamingo, etc. is directly or indirectly diet-related. The American Lobster Fishery Management Plan: An Assessment Of Its Impact On The New Hampshire Lobster Industry, John C. Belcher

Exclusive fishery management jurisdiction between three and twelve nautical miles from the coast was granted to the Federal government by Congress in 1966. No federal regulations governing fishery management were ever promulgated, however. In 1972 an attempt was made to establish management regulations. Regional councils were formed to discuss industrial, managerial and scientific problems associated with fisheries within the territorial sea. Their success was limited. Not until the Fishery Conservation and ManagementAct of 1976 (PubIc Law 94-265) was enacted did a sound management structure exist at the federal level for fisheries regulation. Preliminary studies with an ampule analyzing unit and infrared (IR) detector showed that procedures for standardization and determination of total carbon dioxide (ΣCO2), while often precise, lacked the accuracy required to estimate the net productivity and respiration of aquatic ecosystems during studies in which sampling over diel cycles was used. Scaling down sample and standard volumes to the ~l range and the use of a commercial sodium carbonate standard without dilution before and after replicate sample injections gave accurate results as shown by comparison with indirect (pH-alkalinity) ΣCO2 determinations with a standard error of ±3 μmoles in …

This thesis consists of three studies related to trace-metal marine geochemistry. The first investigation deals with the distribution of iron in the Northwest Atlantic. The second portion is a study comprising a series of physicochemical laboratory measurements aimed at characterization of the heterogeneous equilibrium of malachite (Cu2(OH)2CO3). This work is presented in two reports. The first deals with the experimental results in terms of equilibrium constants and related thermodynamic parameters while the second addresses the geochemical significance of these findings. The present investigation was designed to extend the research on cognitive and social factors predicting both pattern of enrollment in mathematics courses across the high school years and twelfth grade mathematical aptitude test scores among women and men. A total of 226 seniors enrolled in a high school located in an upper-class neighborhood in New England volunteered to participate and completed a booklet containing: a student consent form, the Attitudes toward Mathematics Scales (Fennema & Sherman, 1976), the Agency and Communion Competency Scale (White, 1979), and a background questionnaire.
