While extensive attention has been paid to the theoretical parameters of the concept of transference,

there has been little experimental investigation of this psychoanalytic concept. The present study is an attempt to investigate transference in an empirical and normative fashion and to develop a means of measurement which may provide the basis for extensive further exploration of this central psychotherapeutic concept.

In this study, measurement and operationalization of transference phenomena is undertaken through the combined innovative use of two isomorphic interpersonal inventories, the Interpersonal Behavior Inventory (Lorr and McNair, 1967) and the Impact Message Inventory (Kiesler et al, 1976) by …

Covert visual attention has been studied at several levels of observation and from several perspectives. Literature on covert attention, visual system information processing, and controlled and automatic information processing is reviewed and related to issues of attention, distraction and distractibility. A psychophysical experiment is described, in which speeded button press response was required to identify one of two target letters in a briefly presented four letter array. The problem that this research project will address is the adequacy of the response of the Essex, Connecticut Zoning Regulations to the environmental suitability of the land in the town. In order to analyze this problem, the natural features of the town are first mapped. The regulations of each zoning district in town are then analyzed based on the data provided from the maps and the integration of map features. Studies of doxorubicin pharmacokinetics have been bedeviled by the problems 0£ low assay specificity and the possible degradation of doxorubicin and its metabolites during extraction. The purpose of this investigation was to provide a sensitive, selective, efficient and reproducible assay method for doxorubicin and its metabolites. A C-18 reversed phase HPLC method was chosen to analyze the drug concentrations and the Sep-pak cartridges were used for sample preparation. The Sep-pak cartridge retained doxorubicin and its metabolites while interfering compounds (e.g., protein, cellular components) in the biological samples were eluted. Doxorubicin and its metabolites were then eluted with an acid-methanol mixture …

Avian infectious bronchitis virus (AIBV), a coronavirus, causes acute respiratory disease in chickens.

A rapid diagnostic method was developed for the detection of AIBV in infected chickens using a modified indirect double antibody sandwich (MIDAS) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The system was compared with isolation of virus by the conventional use of chicken embryos.

The MIDAS ELISA was as sensitive as isolation of virus with the use of chicken embryos. However, the MIDAS ELISA was more rapid and easier to apply than the use of chicken embryos.

This thesis consists of a study of the relationship between trace metal chemistry and the carbon dioxide system in the marine environment. The distribution and speciation of several metals with an emphasis on manganese were studied to evaluate the effect of carbon dioxide system, water composition and biological processes. Seawater samples collected in January 1984 along the continental shelf and slope off Peru between latitude 10 to 11°S and longtitude 78 to 79°W were used for this study.

Two marine bacteria, an Acinetobacter sp. (strain GO1) and a Vibrio sp. (strain G1), were isolated by extinction dilution and maintained in natural seawater supplemented with nitrogen, phosphorus, and glucose at 0.01 and 10 mg of glucose carbon per liter above ambient monosaccharide concentrations, respectively. After 3 days in unsupplemented natural seawater, growth in batch culture with glucose supplements was determined by changes in cell numbers and glucose concentration. The exponential growth of the Acinetobacter strain with added glucose was indistinguishable from that in natural seawater alone, whereas that of the Vibrio strain was more rapid in the presence of …

The lands and waters of the coastal zone have either been mismanaged or not managed at all since the early settling of the United States. Nowhere is this more evident, perhaps than along the nation's barrier beaches. Rhode Island, while not suffering nearly from the degree of development on its barrier beaches as other states, is no exception. Economic pressures brought to bear have forced federal, state, and local governments to grapple extensively with this issue. The need for the preservation of barrier beaches in their natural state cannot be overstated and is recognized by all levels of government. This …
