This study was undertaken to investigate the problems and procedures encountered in the development of fishery harbors in Connecticut. Harbor facilities along the coast are in great disrepair or have been completely eliminated to allow for more profitable coastal uses. In addition, conflict between recreational and commercial fishermen for existing space has created a shortage of commercial harbor facilities. Because of this need, state and local officials have begun to investigate viable harbor development alternatives for Connecticut.

High-level radioactive waste produced by nuclear power generation, weapons production, and medical research has been accumulating in temporary storage pools in many countries. A permanent method of disposal will soon benecessary to ensure against contamination of man and the environment. Land-based geologic formations, such as salt domes, are the preferred sites for disposal at this time in the United States. Subseabed emplacement is one option under consideration and the technological aspects of this method are currently being studied. A comparative study of the regulatory frameworks surrounding aquaculture in the states of Florida, Mississippi, and Rhode Island is conducted beginning with a generalized study of basic legal premises of aquaculture-related law common to each state. This is followed by a detailed study of the statutory authority for aquaculture regulation and the agencies which control aquaculture activities in each state. In conjunction with the law analysis an Index of Specialization (ISP) study is conducted for each state to determine a relative ranking of diversity of crop production relative to each state’s overall aquaculture production.

The once questionable technology of hatchery production has become routine and, with the recent development of up-welling techniques, is more effective and efficient. The supply of natural shellfish and fishery stocks is on the decline and this trend is expected to continue. Aquaculture has been the solution to this problem in many European countries and the United States is currently attempting to remove domestic obstacles through its National Aquaculture Plan. ^I5N tracer experiments were conducted to examine the fate of particulate organic nitrogen at the surface of an intact silty sediment community from Narragansett Bay, R.I. (USA). ^I5N-labelled particulate organic matter (POM, 82.5 atom % ^I5N excess), obtained from cultured marine diatoms (Skeletonema costaturn), was applied to the surface of 10 to 12 cm deep sediment cores and the time course distribution of the tracer was determined in inorganic-N and organic-N compartments in sediment and free water. The fates of two four-ringed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), benz(a) anthracene and 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene, were examined in the large marine microcosms of the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory (MERLa) at the University of Rhode Island. The microcosms contain ecosystems that are representative of the conditions in lower Narragansett Bay. Two experiments with carbon-14 labeled benz(a)anthracene lasted 230 and 202 days and were begun in the summer and winter respectively. A summer experiment with carbon-14 labeled 7,12-benz(a)anthracene lasted 62 days. The parent compounds and their degradation products were examined in the water and sediments.

The different chemical forms of iron are an important factor in the marine biochemistry and geochemistry of this element. In this study, the forms and distribution of iron were investigated along a horizontal salinity gradient in the Connecticut River estuary in July 1981, and at a vertical profile in the Slope Water region of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean in September 1981. The redox state of iron was investigated in the offshore water of Peru in January 1984.
