Population Characteristics And Sulfide Oxidizing Metabolism Of The Bivalve Solemya Velum, Chong Chen Jan 1985

Population Characteristics And Sulfide Oxidizing Metabolism Of The Bivalve Solemya Velum, Chong Chen

Open Access Master's Theses

The physiological and biochemical studies of some animals from sulfide-rich habitats, such as deep sea hydrothermal vents, sewage outfall areas, eelgrass beds and mangrove swamps, have shown that sulfide-oxidizing chemoautotrophic bacteria exist endosymbiotically with the animals and provide a major energy source to their host. One of the remaining questions is the degree to which the symbiont supplies the host's need for reduced carbon and energy metabolism.

Solemya velum, a common Atlantic clam from Nova Scotia to Florida, has chemoautotrophic symbionts in the gill tissue (Cavanaugh, 1983). The host animal has a reduced digestive system and lacks some digestive …

Some Factors Related To Self-Esteem In Women, Robin H. Hasenfeld Jan 1985

Some Factors Related To Self-Esteem In Women, Robin H. Hasenfeld

Open Access Dissertations

Previous research has suggested a high positive correlation between agentic characteristics and self-esteem. Psychotherapists have noted, however, that as women clients become more agentic, they experience distress and heightened concerns about betraying their mothers. The present study utilized a non-clinical sample of adult women engaged in the process of personal change (i.e., women reentering college) to explore relationships among the variables of Self-esteem (SE), Fear-of-success (FOS), Educational Goals (EG), Agency (A), Communion (C), agentic similarity to mother (ASI), and comfort with agentic attributes (ACI). In addition, More Advanced and Less Advanced students were compared on these variables. One hundred and …

Creativity, Attention Deployment, And Equilibration, Joseph R. Mcallister Jr. Jan 1985

Creativity, Attention Deployment, And Equilibration, Joseph R. Mcallister Jr.

Open Access Dissertations

This investigation examines the relevance of Piagetian theory for understanding creativity. Selected studies of creativity using a variety of methodologies and deriving from diverse theoretical orientations are reviewed with the purpose of demonstrating a common link among seemingly unrelated investigations, namely, their congruence with a Piagetian theory of creativity.

Three subtopic areas are considered in more detail: attention deployment of creatives, similarities and differences between creatives and schizophrenics, and Kuhn's theory of scientific revolutions. An attempt is made to relate the findings from each of these areas to a Piagetian perspective on creativity.

Subjects were 104 undergraduate student. A tachistoscopic-type …

An Interactive Computer Model For Oil Spill Training, Kurt A. Hansen Jan 1985

An Interactive Computer Model For Oil Spill Training, Kurt A. Hansen

Open Access Master's Theses

An interactive computer model which can be used for marine oil prediction research and as a training tool has been developed. It uses an existing model from the University of Rhode Island which permits tracking of surface as well as entrained subsurface oil. To this are added models of spill cleanup and containment as well as calculations of costs involved for each of the response techniques. The performance of a response is judged in terms of the environmental and aesthetic impact of oil on an area. The model is set up and run for two actual spills in Narragansett Bay …

Benthic-Pelagic Coupling And Nutrient Cycling Across An Experimental Eutophication Gradient, John R. Kelly, Veronica M. Berounsky, Scott W. Nixon, Candace A. Oviatt Jan 1985

Benthic-Pelagic Coupling And Nutrient Cycling Across An Experimental Eutophication Gradient, John R. Kelly, Veronica M. Berounsky, Scott W. Nixon, Candace A. Oviatt

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Sediment-water exchange rates of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (NH4+, NO3-, NO2-) and

phosphorus (PO34-), water column concentrations of both dissolved and particulate forms of N and P, and net primary production (14C) were measured during a summer period in large (13 m3) experimental mesocosms that had been subjected to continuous daily nutrient additions (N, P, Si) for over 1 yr. The concentration of combined dissolved inorganic plus particulate nutrient forms (N, P) was linearly related to the nutrient input rate across a loading range …

Detection, Enumeration, And Sizing Of Planktonic Bacteria By Image-Analyzed Epifluorescence Microscopy, Michael E. Sieracki, Paul W. Johnson, John Mcn. Sieburth Jan 1985

Detection, Enumeration, And Sizing Of Planktonic Bacteria By Image-Analyzed Epifluorescence Microscopy, Michael E. Sieracki, Paul W. Johnson, John Mcn. Sieburth

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Epifluorescence microscopy is now being widely used to characterize planktonic procaryote populations. The tedium and subjectivity of visual enumeration and sizing have been largely alleviated by our use of an image analysis system consisting of a modified Artek 810 image analyzer and an Olympus BHT-F epifluorescence microscope. This system digitizes the video image of autofluorescing or fluorochrome-stained cells in a microscope field. The digitized image can then be stored, edited, and analyzed for total count or individual cell size and shape parameters. Results can be printed as raw data, statistical summaries, or histograms. By using a stain concentration of 5 …

Effect Of Fecal Pollution On Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Densities In An Estuarine Environment, W. D. Watkins, Victor J. Cabelli Jan 1985

Effect Of Fecal Pollution On Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Densities In An Estuarine Environment, W. D. Watkins, Victor J. Cabelli

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Vibrio parahaemolyticus densities in the Narragansett Bay, R.I., estuary were found to significantly correlate with the level of fecal pollution in the water. Results of field investigations showed a definite association between the levels of this organism and those of Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, and enterococci. Densities of V. parahaemolyticus were greatest in the near-surface waters of contaminated areas and decreased sharply with both the distance from the sources of fecal pollution and the depth of the water column. A positive association with the amount of particulate matter in the water and specifically with its zooplankton content also …

Isolation And Partial Characterization Of A Pair Of Prolactins Released In Vitro By The Pituitary Of A Cichlid Fish, Oreochromis Mossambicus, Jennifer L. Specker, David S. King, Richard S. Nishioka, Kunikatsu Shirahata, Kazuo Yamaguchi, Howard A. Bern Jan 1985

Bern

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The pituitary of the cichlid fish tilapia secretes two prolactins (PRLs) of molecular masses 20 kDa and 24 kDa. The 20-kDa PRL has an isoelectric point in the range of those of mammalian PRLs (pI 6.7), but the 24-kDa PRL is unusually basic (pI 8.7). Partial sequence information indicates that the PRLs are homologous but distinct proteins, differing by five amino acids within the first 29 NH2-terminal residues. Homology in the known region is higher with chum salmon PRL than with known mammalian PRLs. Reversed-phase HPLC permits isolation of these two PRLs and a single tilapia growth hormone …

Orvs On The Cape Cod National Seashore, Karen G. Chaffee

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

With the creation of a National Seashore, we incur the responsibility of maintaining and preserving it. Since the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961, the use of off-road vehicles (ORV's) has increased dramatically. These vehicles damage the fragile ecosystems of the seashore. The National Park Service Cooperative Research Unit at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst was commissioned to undertake a five year study of the many facets of off-road vehicle impact on beach and dune as well as salt marsh and tidal flats.

Coral Reef Islands And Their Problems, Peter C. Schroeder May 1984

Coral Reef Islands And Their Problems, Peter C. Schroeder

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Small islands and in particular those more or less dependent on their reefs as a resource were often self-contained units, maintaining a fragile equilibrium in which even small changes could and have wrought fatal disturbances. The pressures of the modern world have endangered these vulnerable units economically, socially, and biologically. In all instances the "'population factor has played an important role. Coral reef islands appear to be more susceptible to the side effects of rapidly growing modernization than other types of islands. No clear answer or solution to this problem can be given but recognition of the threats to them …

Ixtoc I: Case Study Of A Major Oil Spill, Peter G. Myer Apr 1984

Ixtoc I: Case Study Of A Major Oil Spill, Peter G. Myer

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The most disastrous oil spill the western hemisphere has ever witnessed occurred during the 10 months between June 1979 and March 1980, when the experimental well IXTOC I blew out off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The disaster's effects on South Texas virtually destroyed a year's earnings for the region's tourism industry and cut into the profits of many commercial fishermen. The activities at the well that caused the blowout and subsequent spill, the effects of the oil on Texas' Gulf Coast, and the legal attempts to recover against losses suffered as a result of the spill will be …

Root-Exuded Oxygen In The Aquatic Angiosperm Ruppia Maritima, Glen B. Thursby Jan 1984

Root-Exuded Oxygen In The Aquatic Angiosperm Ruppia Maritima, Glen B. Thursby

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The potential impact of oxygen from roots on the source of inorganic nitrogen for Ruppia maritima L. (Potamogetonales) was investigated in laboratory experiments. Roots released oxygen at an average rate of 2 to 3 μg O2 (mg dry wt)-1h-1. A distinctive oxygenated zone with a radius of 0.75 to 1.25 mm developed in the sediment around the roots. Although nitrate and nitrite could have been present in the oxygenated zone, these were unlikely to be significant sources of nitrogen for R. maritima. Root hairs extended up to 6 mm beyond this zone. In addition, …
