The consumer's acceptance of food quality is an important factor, especially in Third World Countries which import much of their food. Since flesh food (meat, fish) is shipped to those countries frozen or in cold storage, it is susceptible to temperature fluctuations during shipment, resulting in deterioration of the meat and unacceptable quality. Therefore an acceptable procedure to assess flesh food quality is necessary to protect the consumer and trader and to aid in the manufacture of high quality food products.

The goals of this report are to: 1) establish the importance of wildlife conservation planning by local communities, and present important ecological concepts to nonscientists, 2) develop a detailed wildlife planning methodology, which planners can practice in their communities, and 3) explore the legal basis for wildlife conservation zoning, and provide useful examples of local zoning ordinances.

Communities should seek to maintain a diversity of wildlife species, within their geographical boundaries. Wildlife is valuable to the public for a variety of reasons. The concept for this study emanated from an enlightening experience I once had while touring several "governmentally - planned" residential developments in northeastern Greece as part of the University of Illinois Summer Program in Greece, 1984. This was my first introduction to the devastating effects of poor planning.

The Greek people in this part of the country have a close relationship with their land which is central to their way of life. The residential developments I witnessed were the antithesis of the residents' natural and rural nature which has been part of their culture for centuries.

From November, 1981 to November { 1982, zooplankton were sampled bimonthly by oblique net tows in the upper 200 m of the Gulf Stream and nearby regions along a cross-stream 0 0 transect of 9 stations centered at 36 N 73 W, where the Stream turns offshore from Cape Hatteras. In September, 1982 and May, 19 83, extensive vertically stratified sampling of zooplankton was conducted at 3 stations along this same transect with a MOCNESS net system in the upper 1000 m of the water column. Role Of Vascular Reactivity And Collagen Biosynthesis In The Depressor Effect Of Streptozotocin In The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, Paul H. Breault

Diabetes decreases systolic arterial pressure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Two possible mechanisms, a decrease in vascular collagen biosynthesis and an altered vascular reactivity, were investigated. Collagen biosynthesis, as indicated by prolyl hydroxylase activity, was reduced in the aorta in the diabetic SHR to a greater extent than the diabetic Wistar-Kyoto rat (WKY). Prolyl hydroxylase activity was also reduced, but to a lesser extent, in the aorta of food restricted and hypothyroid SHR and WKY rats. Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes increased the sensitivity of the mesenteric artery of both strains to methoxamine only. The response of the mesenteric artery of …

Sedimentation rate data for the late Pleistocene and Holocene was compiled and mapped along with bulk sediment accumulation rate data estimated from the surface calcium carbonate concentration. This data was combined with surface organic carbon and opal (biogenic silica) concentration data in order to calculate the recent rate of accumulation of these biogenically derived sedimentary components. The maps of organic carbon and opal accumulation rates showed similar trends, being highest in known regions of upwelling and high productivity. Annual organic carbon burial was estimated by multiplying the accumulation rate by the areas between the contours and found to be 0.21 …

Biological And Environmental Influences On The Cognitive Development Of Children With Developmental Disabilities, Ruth H. Schennum

The biological and environmental influences on sensorimotor/cognitive development were studied. Participants were 100 children with developmental disabilities between the ages of 2 and 28 months and their families. Scores from the Rochester Research Obstetric Scale (ROS), Pediatric Complications Scale (PdCS), and Home Observation for the Measurement of the Environment (HOME) were used as independent variables in a multiple regression analysis. The dependent variable was the Mental Development Index (MDI) from the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Results indicate there is a significant, but moderate relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Very little overlap was found among the independent variables. …
