Comparison Of Three Separation Tecnniques For Arsenic (Iii) And Arsenic (V) In Sea Water, Samuel Asare Amankwah

Separation and determination of arsenic species in sea water is an attractive area of current research primarily due to the effects the different oxidation states of the element have on its bioavailability and toxicity. Many separation procedures for the arsenic species in sea water prior to their determination by graphite furnace -, hydride generation - atomic absorption spectrophotometry or neutron activation technique have been reported.

Effect Of The Content Of Moral Dilemmas Upon Responses On The Defining Issues Test, Gail M. Lawson

This study investigates the "structured whole" hypothesis of cognitive-moral developmental theory which suggests that there is a general factor of moral stage crosscutting responses to all moral dilemmas which results in a stage-consistent pattern of responses on instruments assessing moral development. In order to assess the effect of the content of moral dilemmas the Defining Issues Test (DIT) was administered to 300 undergraduate students at a mid-sized state university. Results suggest that dilemmas differentially "pull for" or exclude certain levels of moral reasoning providing no support for the "structured whole" hypothesis of cognitive moral development theory. The purpose of this research was to study the various aspects of root, shoot and reproductive growth of the cultivated highbush blueberry under normal conditions and as influenced by seasonal root zone flooding.

These studies were conducted on three cultivars – “Earliblue”, “Bluecrop”, and “Lateblue” for up to three years. Root, shoot, and reproductive growth were measured at intervals throughout the years and the soil temperature and stage of plant development recorded.

Growth of white unsuberized roots peaked in early-June and September when soil temperatures were in the range of 14 to 18 °C and was concomitant with shoot growth. …

The AOAC method and other open column techniques which are used to determine retinol content, are time consuming, require technical skills, and do not always result in a complete separation of retinol from other fluorescent components. In some cases cis-trans isomers are formed due to the long term exposure of retinol to oxygen, light, adsorbents and solvents. The colorimetric method hes disadvantages which include a rapidly fading blue color, sensitivity of the reagent to moisture, and interference from carotenoids. Racemic astaxanthin was fed to rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) for 2, 4, and 6 weeks. The fish showed a bright pink coloration of the skin and flesh; the highest amount of astaxanthin (162 ug/100g) was found in the skin of fish fed the test diet for six weeks. Lutein, 3-epilutein, and zeaxanthin were also detected in the flesh and skin; it was concluded that astaxanthin was converted to zeaxanthin in the skin. The mean vitamin A content of the liver was determined; the ratio of vitamin A₁: vitamin A₂ was approximately 1:3. There was no …

Elevated levels of non‐sea‐salt sulfate and SO₂ in samples collected off the west coast of South America indicate that there is a major source of atmospheric sulfur in the region of southern Peru and northern Chile. During a 1983 cruise, observed concentrations of non‐sea‐salt sulfur, SO₂, selenium, arsenic, and antimony were comparable to levels reported for moderately polluted urban air. In contrast, methanesulfonic acid levels were typical of coastal marine air. Clearly, the elevated atmospheric sulfur levels in this region cannot be ascribed to oceanic organosulfur emissions. Metabolism in estuarine mesocosms was measured by total system oxygen and carbon dioxide and by C-14 bottle incubations to determine the effects of nutrient enrichment (6 levels) over a 9 mo period. These data provided an unprecedented opportunity for calculating metabolic ratios (photosynthetic quotient [P.Q.] and respiratory quotient [R.Q.]) based on the 3 measures of metabolism and determining the impact of other system processes. System metabolism ratios based on daily data varied from 0 to 5.0. System metabolism ratios of P.Q. and R Q. based on integrated data were highly correlated (r = 0.95 to 0.96) and similar to traditional …

The Salt Ponds Project scientific research and management efforts were designed to address the management issues typical to barrier beach-lagoon systems. It was anticipated that the finds of the project would be applied to the management of similar estuarine systems in Rhode Island and elsewhere. Measurements of the force generated by the legs of rock doves Columba livia during vertical and near-vertical take-off showed that the birds were able to develop an upward directed force of from 1.3 to 2.3 times their body weight. This force resulted in an instantaneous acceleration of 15.63 ms⁻² at maximum thrust. Motion pictures taken during the take-off showed that as the birds' feet left the experimental perch, their wings were in the overhead clap position. We suggest that the vertical take-off in birds is accomplished in three stages; leg thrust, clap-and-fling and steady-state flight.

The performance of the isolated hearts of a gastropod, Busycon canaliculatum (L.), and a bivalve, Mercenaria mercenaria(L.), were examined at different perfusion levels around the expected physiological ranges. Both hearts followed the Frank-Starling relationship with regard to stroke volume versus preload, but the heart-rate response was species-dependent. The argument is developed that the molluscs might functionally apply Starling's Law of the heart to accommodate increased output during exercise.

Chloroplast-containing and apochlorotic cells of nanoplankton (2 to 20 μm), and chroococcoid cyanobacteria and total bacteria in the picoplankton (0.2 to 2.0 μm) were enumerated by epifluorescence microscopy from 39 estuarine and oceanic stations to assess numerical relations of apochlorotic nanoplankton with other components of the microbial plankton. Apparent relations between different plankton types were found over geographic separation as well as seasonal and diel-cycles. Population densities of apochlorotic, heterotrophic nanoplankton (Hnan) and chloroplast-containing, phototrophic nanoplankton (Pnano) were similar, ranging from 10⁴ cells ml^-1 in estuarine environments to 10² cells ml^-1 at oceanic stations. This paper will present this subject in three parts, corresponding to the historical developments that have taken place. The saga begins with U.S. post-World War II aid in rebuilding the Japanese tuna, whaling and salmon fleets. Round two examines the rapid expansion of the Japanese utilization of Alaska pollock and the development of the surimi trawlers in the early 1960s. Increased experience in fisheries cooperatives of developing countries has called into question a long-held presumption about their desirability and feasibility. In this context, this study attempts to reformulate the cooperative approach for small-scale fisheries in a realistic policy framework. First, past failures of fisheries cooperatives are analyzed from three different angles: the uniqueness of the fishing industry, systems intrinsic to the cooperative, and development policy. The striped bass (Morone saxatilis), or rockfish, fishery has been important both commercially and recreationally for decades along the Atlantic seaboard. In recent years, though, the fishery has undergone a serious decline and, as a result, has elicited considerable public concern. Although specific reasons for the decline have not been pinpointed, it is clear that inconsistent management practices within the range of striped bass have done little to help the fishery's condition.
