Calcium Utilization In Contractures Induced By Acetylcholine Or High-Potassium Saline In Molluscan Proboscis Muscles, D. D. Brooks, H. Huddart, R. Lennard, R. B. Hill

The mechanisms by which high-K⁺ saline and acetylcholine (ACh) mobilize cellular calcium in molluscan muscle was studied in three proboscis muscles of Busycon canaliculatum. BAY K 8644, a calcium agonist, enhanced tonic force induced by exposure to 25 mmoll⁻¹ K⁺ in the odontophore and radular retractor muscles but inhibited this response in the radular sac muscle. Its effect on the radular protractor muscle was concentration-dependent, excitatory at 10⁻⁷ mol l⁻¹ and inhibitory at higher concentrations. The heat shock response of Borrelia burgdorferi B31 cells was characterized with regard to the heat shock proteins (Hsps) produced. Five to seven Hsps were detected by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis and fluorography of proteins from cells labeled with [³⁵S]methionine after shifts from 33°C to 37 or 40°C or from 20°C to 33, 37, or 40°C. Analysis of [³⁵S]methionine-labeled Hsps by two-dimensional electrophoresis and autoradiography revealed 12 Hsps. Western immunoblot analysis with antisera to highly conserved Escherichia coli and Mycobacterium tuberculosis Hsps revealed a single 72-kilodalton (kDa) protein band that reacted with antibodies to E. coli …

Dumping of wastes into the ocean has gone on for years especially in the New York Bight. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is mandated by Title II of the Ocean Dumping Act of 1972 to investigate the effects of ocean dumping on the marine environment. However, there is a perception within Congress, the public and other agencies that NOAA is not meeting it's responsibilities with regard to ocean dumping research. The National Undersea Research Program (NURP) is a federally-funded program that provides scientists with modern in situ technology that allows them to conduct research that goes beyond the constraints of traditional oceanographic methodology. Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems represent an environmentally sound method to extract that energy resource. Included in this paper is a review of the history of OTEC, basic thermodynamic principles involved and major components of the system. Sediment cores have long been used to formulate the chronology of environmental contamination. This paper will investigate the utility of sediment cores in determining the chronology of trace metal contamination in Apponaug Cove, Rhode Island. A meter-long sediment core taken from the Cove was analyzed for chromium, copper, lead, zinc and nickel as well as organic pollutants coprostanol, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, benzotriazole and clorobenzotriazole. The core represents a close to 200 year record of sediments in Apponaug Cove. Great Salt Pond on Block Island, Rhode Island is a favorite site for recreational boaters in New England. However, overcrowding causes congestion and water pollution problems during summer. The Department of Environmental Management has closed the Pond to shellfishing every summer since 1986. Residents feels that recreational boaters are to blame and should take responsibility for controlling the problems. Recreational boaters, on the other hand, feel that they have already paid enough in docking and shellfishing license fees. The use of Pond is a source of conflict between these two groups.

A series of estuarine mesocosms is described, where nutrient budgets were used to determine rates of nitrogen and phosphorus trapping and export as a function of nutrient input level, season, and presence or absence of sediments. Regardless of treatment or season these experimental systems exported most of the N and P that they received. Control systems with sediments retained none of the inflowing N and P during summer, and 5 % of N and 25 % of P inputs during winter. Eutrophied systems with sediments initially retained 30 % of added N and P due to increases in water column …

The relationship of perceived paternal nurturance and acceptance and parents' nurturance and acceptance of their children was investigated. Two-hundred and fifty (250) undergraduate students and their parents participated in the study. Each subject completed an abbreviated version of the Family Data Form (FDF), which was used to obtain individual and family demographic information. The Family Relations Inventory (FRI) was utilized to measure subjects' perceptions of the degree of parental nurturance and acceptance received. In addition, students completed the Comrey Personality Scales (CPS). Interrelationships between students' and parents' perceived nurturance and acceptance were examined through the utilization of a structural equation …
