Hopelessness was explored from a developmental perspective. The investigation focused primarily on the relative importance of structural vs. functional variables in determining levels of hopelessness in children and adolescents. The two secondary aims of this study were to further clarify the concept of hopelessness, and to assess the construct validity of the Hopelessness Scale for Children (HSC: Kazdin et al., 1983).

Sixty-four children and adolescents scoring either "high" or "low" on the HSC were interviewed. Thirty-two of the subjects were children, 6-10 years of age. One half of these subjects were clinically involved. The adolescent sample also consisted of thirty-two …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of both field of study and gender on locus of control orientation among graduate students at the University of Rhode Island at Kingston.

This study solicited participation from graduate students enrolled at the University of Rhode Island, spring semester, 1990 excluding those enrolled in the Graduate School of Oceanography, School of Business and in courses offered by the Director of the College of Continuing Education (CCE) Special Programs Division were excluded from the study. A total of 804 graduate students returned the two surveys which were used to gather data. …

A Measurement Model For Relapse Ideaology, Jeffery Mark Bellis

A 12-item Relapse Ideology questionnaire was developed to measure attitudes and beliefs of smokers and ex-smokers (N= 651) towards relapse. Three ideological orientations were constructed, based on the disease, moral and addictive behavior models of addiction described by Marlatt and Gordon (1985). The structure of the questionnaire was examined using principal components analysis and structural modeling techniques. Results suggested a correlated, three factor solution which corresponded to the three models of addiction. Red maple swamps are common throughout the glaciated Northeast and, along with other wetland types, are protected for their wildlife habitat and other functions. Yet there are few descriptions of red maple swamp wildlife communities, and little research on how the wildlife are influenced by habitat features. Several states define jurisdictional wetlands on the basis of wetland size, but the influence of area on wetland wildlife communities is largely unknown.

Birds were censused in 12 mature, very poorly drained red maple swamps in southern Rhode Island. Swamps ranged from 0.49 to 19.24 ha and were placed in four size categories. …

This study evaluates the seasonal infestation rates of white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus, harboring immature stages of the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, at three sites on Prudence Island, Rhode Island, USA, a Lyme disease endemic area. Larval infestation rates varied from 46.0 larvae per mouse in August to none at all sites during November, while nymphal infestations ranged from 11.0 per mouse in June to none at all three sites in September through November. This dissertation is motivated by the clinical problem of determining which of two comparably effective modes of treatment (pharrnacotherapy and psychotherapy) a depressed individual would be most likely to benefit from. A cognitive variable, illness beliefs about depression, is proposed as a promising guide for making such patient-treatment mode matches.

A broad area of literature is reviewed in order to learn how beliefs about depression are and have been conceptualized, and to learn what methods, if any, have been previously used to measure them. A microorganism capable of synthesizing biosurfactant from cheap and renewable water-soluble substrate such as carbohydrate was isolated' from the environment in our laboratory. It was selected from other isolates by screening for its ability to reduce the tensiometric properties of the culture broth. The isolated organism (JIZAN-1) produced significant extracellular surfactant activity during growth in batch culture on modified mineral salts medium (MMSM) containing 0.2% glucose as a carbon source and 0.02% yeast extract as a growth cofactor. This was demonstrated by lowering of the whole broth surface tension to less than 27.0 dynes/cm and the interfacial tension to less …
