The accumulation of fecal coliforms and several other indicator microorganisms (Escherichia coli, enterococci, Clostridium perfringens, and male-specific bacteriophage) by hard-shelled clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) was investigated with regard to season and temperature. Very high rates of accumulation were found for each of these indicator organisms during distinct periods in the spring. Uptake of indicators during these periods exceeded 2 SD of the mean annual accumulation rates. Except for these periods of 'hyper-accumulation', uptake of the indicators is at least partially temperature dependent. In general, bacteriophage and C. perfringens were accumulated by clams at significantly higher rates …

The growth and further development of the tourism industry at the community level often leads to more impacts than just the often-acknowledged jobs, wages, and tax revenues. Socio-cultural impacts such as crime and congestion are felt within the destination community. Similarly, environmental impacts such as erosion and the destruction of precious coral reefs also felt within the community. All of these impacts resulting from tourism influence the quality of life within tourism communities as well as influencing the quality of experiences gained by tourists to that community.

A comparison was made of the lengths of the restriction fragments produced when total DNA from eight clones of three species of diatoms, Thalassiosira rotula (Meunier), T. gravida (Cleve) and T. nordenskioeldii (Cleve), was digested with twelve restriction endonucleases and probed with two heterologous chloroplast DNA probes from C. reinhardtii. DNA from the T. rotula clones would not hybridize with the C. reinhardtii probes under high stringency conditions but the T. grayjda and T. nordenskioeldii DNA hybridized strongly to these same probes. Peptide and protein drugs are increasingly becoming popular with the advances in biotechnology. Although these compounds are highly potent and display superior pharmacological profiles, there are various barriers to their systemic delivery. Most of these barriers are related to the properties of the proteins and peptides which include high large molecular size, susceptibility to proteolytic breakdown, tendency to undergo aggregation, adsorption, and denaturation. In recent years the number of postmortem cases in which cocaine involvement is suspected has increased considerably. This has created a need for a rapid screening procedure for the postmortem samples. The present study examined the usefulness of vitreous humor specimens, analyzed by a rapid immunological assay, as a possible alternative to the more conventional and relatively slow gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of blood samples to screen for antemortem cocaine use. Medical examiner cases occurring over a six month period were reviewed and forty-eight cases which were determined to be drug related or drug induced deaths were analyzed. Nietzsche on Truth and Overcoming traces the development of Friedrich Nietzsche's epistemic criticism. Nietzsche's outright denial of the existence of truth is grounded in his claim that stable metaphysical entities do not exist. The following inquiry examines Nietzsche's method of doubting which compels him to dismiss "being" as a fictitious "perspectival falsification".

Nietzsche's denial of the reality of pre-existent "being" creates problems with communicating what he means through normal language. A detailed record of the 87Sr/86Sr variations in seawater over the last 100 Ma has been determined by measuring the 87Sr/86Sr of well-preserved and well-dated fossil foraminifera from twelve Deep Sea Drilling Project cores of overlapping ages. Diagenetic alteration of the sample foraminifera was evaluated in three ways: by Sr/Ca ratios, by pore water chemistry, and by visual examination under the scanning electron microscope. Age assessments were made on the basis of magnetobiostratigraphy.

Foraminiferal ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr measurements show an almost continuous increase in the seawater ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr from 0.70738 at 100 Ma to 0.70920 today. The …

In an estuary, characterized by biogeochemical reactions that affect the input, cycling, and removal of river-borne components, an understanding of the factors that regulate biomass and production of the estuarine ecosystem requires insight into the controls on phosphorus dynamics.

Phosphate, the principal dissolved phosphorus species in natural waters, interacts rapidly with an assortment of surfaces, being taken up by and released from inert particles through a complex series of sorption reactions. Phosphate is especially susceptible to adsorption on freshly precipitated or coagulated iron particles. I investigated the biology of the Mexican carabid, Lebia subgrandis Madge, a potential biological control agent of the Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say). The consumption of CPB eggs and 1st through 3rd instar larvae increased with temperature for both male and female L. subgrandis. Under laboratory conditions, confined pairs consumed up to 108 CPB eggs / day at 28°C (mean = 44.5 CPB eggs / day). Early-summer females produced more offspring than late-summer females. Apparently, mating was infrequent; I found no difference in oviposition rates when the females were confined with males for 0, 1, 2, or …

Escherichia coli F-18 Col^- was previously shown to be a poor colonizer of the streptomycin-treated mouse large intestine, relative to its parent, E. coli F-18. Prior to attempting to clone genes responsible for the colonization phenotype of E. coli F-18 into E. coli F-18 Col^-, a suitable cloning vector had to be found. In this investigation, we report that the commonly used cloning vectors pBR322, pHC79, and pBR329 all segregate from E. coli F-18 Col^- both when grown in L broth under conditions of nonselection (i.e., in vitro) and when fed to streptomycin-treated mice (i.e., in …
