Successful management of wetland wildlife populations requires a basic understanding of invertebrate ecology and their availability as food to higher life forms. Community structure, abundance, and seasonal dynamics of litter invertebrates in red maple forested wetlands are unknown. Differences in these parameters may influence where wildlife species forage along a wetland-upland gradient. I studied invertebrate use by ground-foraging birds along moisture gradients from upland forests to red maple (Acer rubrum) forested wetlands at three sites in Washington County, Rhode Island from April through August 1991. Gender And Attitudes Toward Casual Sex As Predictors Of Risky Sexual Behavior Of Undergraduates, Donna Johnson

College men and women were compared on a number of variables concerned with risky sexual behavior, including gender and attitudes toward casual sex. MANOVA revealed that, when compared to women, men showed significantly: higher frequency of intercourse, more sex partners and higher frequency of condom use. Following a random division of the sample into two groups, a factor analysis was performed. The resulting factor structure consisted of three factors, Potential Negative Consequences, Affective Evaluation of the Environment, and Perception of Safety and Control. Nitrate (NO₃^-) is the most commonly detected groundwater pollutant in the U.S. Sources of NO₃^- in the environment include agriculture, septic systems, and atmosphere deposition. Riparian forests have been found to prevent the movement of NO₃^- from upland areas to ground and surface waters. However, the mechanisms responsible for NO₃^- attenuation in riparian forests are variable and poorly characterized. There is particular uncertainty about the factors affecting NO₃^- in groundwater beneath riparian forests. The term "invalid," in its usage as a label for women who occupy the space of the "sick" bed, functions to reify socio-political apparatuses which inscribe pain onto the female body, diminish the value of the feminine, and reproduce oppression vis-a-vis gender. This thesis critiques languages and ideologies used by doctors and editors/ critics, as well as those used by nineteenth-century diarists Alice James and Achsa Sprague. This project examines the plurality of voices reflecting and projecting discourses that are now in conflict, now at plateau. This thesis is an historical study of the racially charged context in which public schools in Little Rock, Arkansas were 'desegregated' between 1954 and 1964. The author first examines the Supreme Court's landmark decision of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954), in which racially segregated public schools were declared unconstitutional. The central focus of the study, however, is on the paternalistic and unequal nature of southern race relations and their impact on the desegregation process in Little Rock, Arkansas between 1954 and 1964.

Dissolved Fe(II) was isolated and preconcentrated in situ in the euphotic waters of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, using complexation by Ferrozine previously adsorbed on a C₁₈ hydrocarbon substrate and then determined spectrophotometrically. The distribution of Fe(II) in the surface waters varied temporally and spatially, exhibiting maxima near the surface and often at depths with higher chlorophyll a. Laboratory photochemical experiments with equatorial Pacific seawater demonstrated photochemical reduction of Fe(ill) which may be an important source for Fe(II) in these waters, altering the speciation and bioavailability of iron.

Blood / injury phobia is a simple phobia unique in its association with fainting, underlying physiological processes, and potentially dire consequences for sufferers due to avoidance of medical attention. Laboratory studies of blood/injury phobias (e.g, Ost et al., 1984) have demonstrated a diphasic physiological response (immediate increases in heart rate and blood pressure above previously recorded baseline levels followed by significant decreases below baseline) when patients view videotapes of thoracic surgery. Little is known about the physiological responses to blood/injury stimuli of college students reporting fear of blood. The effect of nifedipine saturation solubility in several cosolvent systems on nifedipine permeation through hairless mouse skin is evaluated. The effects of patch components is measured by (1) identifying those factors which significantly affect the permeation of nifedipine and (2) selecting settings for these factors which optimize flux and lag times. Of particular interest is the application of solubility theory toward the estimation of theoretical partition coefficients which were, it turn, useful in predicting the effect of donor composition on nifedipine permeation. This paper explores the role that measurements of changes in atmospheric oxygen, detected through changes in the O₂/N₂ ratio of air, can play in improving our understanding of the global carbon cycle. Simple conceptual models are presented in order to clarify the biological and physical controls on the exchanges of O₂, CO₂, N₂, and Ar across the air‐sea interface and in order to clarify the relationships between biologically mediated fluxes of oxygen across the air‐sea interface and the cycles of organic carbon in the ocean. This paper investigates essential elements of marine resource management programs, particularly how they are initiated and what is needed for their success. The focus of this paper is on management planning for sites where marine resources are still largely intact as opposed to those which are severely disturbed. Planning is aimed at determining carrying capacity of the marine systems and limiting disturbances accordingly. As part of a multidisciplinary investigation on the sediments of Narragansett Bay, sediment trap materials, surface sediments, hard shell clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) and sediment cores from throughout the bay were analyzed for organic contaminants including: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs). polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), substituted benzotriazoles (BZTs), bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and coprostanol (COP).
