The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates there are between 1.6-3.8 million sports and recreation related concussions per year. In fact there are over 4 million concussions (including non-sports related) in total each year. A concussion is defined as a serious brain injury caused by the rapid movement (linear front-to-back, side-to-side) or rotational (angular) movement of the brain inside the skull, which results in damage and disruption to the brain cell function, causing brain trauma (sports concussion library). Food security is defined as access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life (Coleman-Jensen et al., 2016). In 2015, an estimated 42.2 million Americans experienced food insecurity, that is, they struggled to feed themselves or their families due to low or insufficient incomes. Food insecure individuals must find alternative sources for food such as soup kitchens, shelters, federal nutrition benefits programs, and local food pantries. Food pantries, which rely on donations, fund-raising, and support from organized regional food banks, serve a wide variety of low-income clients: elderly, disabled individuals, homeless, and working families …

Art and science are often treated as separate disciplines in the modern world. Harkening back to the time when science was called “natural philosophy,” this project is intended to show the inherent compatibility between art, specifically painting and poetry, and science, specifically immunology. Hematopoietic (the source of the pun hematopoetic) cells all derive from a common progenitor in the human bone marrow; differentiated cells go on to inhabit a variety of areas in the body, from the blood to the lymphatics to other non-flowing tissues, either looking out for foreign material or being summoned when foreign material is found. The purpose of this paper is to contrast scientific rhetoric with creative biographical writing style. Both forms of communication rely on specific syntax and styles to describe research findings to the appropriate audiences, but the often passive format of scientific literature excludes the passionate reasonings of the researcher. In order to understand why the scientist is kept separate from his or her published findings, I am going to experiment with the two contrasting forms. Mechanics of the bilayer membrane play an important role in many biological and bioengineering problems such as cell–substrate and cell–nanomaterial interactions. In this work, we study the effect of thermal fluctuation and the substrate elasticity on the cell membrane–substrate adhesion. We model the adhesion of a fluctuating membrane on an elastic substrate as a two-step reaction comprised of the out-of-plane membrane fluctuation and the receptor–ligand binding. The equilibrium closed bond ratio as a function of substrate rigidity was computed by developing a coupled Fourier space Brownian dynamics and Monte Carlo method. Production of biobased chemicals by fermentation at competitive titer, rate, and yield involves optimizing the cellular resources normally devoted to biomass formation and directing them towards product formation. Systems and synthetic biology tools are the key to surmounting these challenges. As an example success of this approach, Genomatica has developed a complete bioprocess for commercial scale production of 1,4-butanediol (BDO) from carbohydrate feedstocks. BDO is a chemical intermediate (> 3B lbs/yr) that goes into a variety of products including automotive parts and apparel, and is currently produced commercially through energy-intensive petrochemical processes. The Human Library Project was founded in Denmark as a way to respond to youth violence. It evolved into an event where people representing the biases and stereotypes that society holds engage with their peers to talk about them. They also discuss general current issues in today’s society. The representatives are called “books”, who are “checked out” by people participating in the event, the “readers”. Flexible dieting is a ubiquitous method of eating among the fitness population. It is not a diet, but rather a nutritional concept that refutes any diet that promotes cutting out entire foods or food groups as a method to lose weight. It is a structured and science-based method of eating that involves tracking calories through monitoring the three main macronutrients: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. These macronutrients are individualized and adjusted for muscle growth, fat loss, or weight maintenance in order to optimize intake to facilitate the manipulation of body composition. Biopolymer-Carbon Nanotube Hybrids: From Fundamentals To Biomedical Applications, Dan Roxbury

The intrinsic band-gap photoluminescence (fluorescence) of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibits exceptional photostability, narrow bandwidth, near-infrared (NIR) tissue-penetrating emission, and microenvironmental sensitivity, enabling their usage in a variety of biomedical imaging and sensing applications. Amphiphilic biopolymers, such as single-stranded DNA or peptides, are capable of singly-dispersing SWCNTs, facilitating photoluminescence in aqueous solutions, in addition to increasing the biocompatibility of the hybrid. A DNA sequence-dependent scheme for SWCNT species (chirality) separation has been observed that highly correlated with DNA-SWCNT binding strengths. Using all-atom replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations (REMD), equilibrium structures confirmed that a variety of novel DNA secondary structures form …

INTRODUCTION:

Diarrhoea is a leading cause of death globally, mostly occurring as a result of insufficient or unsafe water supplies, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. Our study aims to investigate the impact of a community-level hygiene education program and a water quality intervention using riverbank filtration (RBF) technology on diarrhoeal prevalence.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

We have designed a stepped wedge cluster randomised trial to estimate the health impacts of our intervention in 4 rural villages in Karnataka, India.
