Aspects Of Nesting Ecology Of The Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin) In Rhode Island, Caitlin C. Goodwin Jan 1994

Aspects Of Nesting Ecology Of The Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin) In Rhode Island, Caitlin C. Goodwin

Open Access Master's Theses

I studied the only known nesting population of diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) in Rhode Island at Nockum Hill Wildlife Sanctuary, Barrington, Bristol County and characterized aspects of the nesting behavior and ecology of this population, described nest site habitat characteristics and factors affecting nest success, and compared my findings to other described Malaclemys populations. A total of 241 nests was found at Nockum Hill in 1993. Terrapins tended to nest in the morning and near the time of high tide. Mammalian predators, primarily raccoons, destroyed 75 of 86 monitored nests. Fifty-five percent of the surviving clutches were oviposited …

Physico-Chemical Characterization Of Shark-Fins, Adel M. Al-Qasmi Jan 1994

Physico-Chemical Characterization Of Shark-Fins, Adel M. Al-Qasmi

Open Access Master's Theses

Shark-fins are one of the most expensive fish products in the world that fetch high prices in the oriental market. The value of the fins depends on the species, size and quantity of fin needles. These factors are largely determined by the intrinsic chemical and physical characteristics of the shark-fins which this study addressed.

In order to formulate the relationship between body size and fin sizes of sharks, seven hundered and sixty-six shark specimens were measured and recorded from landing sites in Oman between July, 1991 to June 1992. The regression of body size in relation to the fin sizes …

Vector Competence In Lyme Disease : Studies On Ixodes Scapularis, Dermacentor Variabilis, And Amblyomma Americanum, Min-Tsung Yeh Jan 1994

Vector Competence In Lyme Disease : Studies On Ixodes Scapularis, Dermacentor Variabilis, And Amblyomma Americanum, Min-Tsung Yeh

Open Access Dissertations

Ticks in the Ixodes ricinus-species complex have been implicated as vectors of Lyme disease spirochetes (Borrelia burgdorferi). A variety of other ticks, notably American dog ticks (Dermacentor variabilis) and Lone Star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) in the U.S., appear incapable of transmitting Lyme disease spirochetes despite ingesting these bacteria. In this study, I confirmed that deer ticks, but not dog ticks or Lone Star ticks became infected with Lyme disease spirochetes after feeding on infected hosts. In addition, I assessed several potential physiologic factors that could affect the ability of ticks to acquire, maintain, …

Nutritional Aspects Of Cytotoxin Production By Clostridium Difficile, Doreen P. Osgood, Norris P. Wood, Jay F. Sperry Jan 1993

Nutritional Aspects Of Cytotoxin Production By Clostridium Difficile, Doreen P. Osgood, Norris P. Wood, Jay F. Sperry

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Arginine was the only amino acid used by Clostridium difficile that permitted cytotoxin synthesis in a peptone-based medium. Synthesis of cytotoxin was delayed when glucose was used as the substrate. Addition of rifampin or puromycin to cultures prior to release of cytotoxin inhibited the release of cytotoxin, suggesting that a protein essential for cytotoxin release is synthesized after cytotoxin is synthesized.

Nutrient Resorption In Desert Shrubs, Keith T. Killingbeck Jan 1993

Nutrient Resorption In Desert Shrubs, Keith T. Killingbeck

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Nutrient resorption is the physiological process that acts to conserve plant nutrients by withdrawing them from tissues undergoing senescence and sequestering them for future use. Speculation about this process has suggested that desert shrubs may rely heavily on resorption to conserve specific nutrients that are often in short supply in arid lands. The objectives of this paper are to examine the efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus resorption in desert shrubs and to comment on the potential interplay between resorption and desertification. Mean resorption efficiencies for nitrogen and phosphorus were 57% and 53%, respectively, in the seven species of desert shrubs …

Human Health Risks Due To Consumption Of Chemically Contaminated Fishery Products, Farid E. Ahmed, Dale Hattis, Richard E. Wolke, David Steinman

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

A small proportion of fishery products contaminated with appreciable amounts of potentially hazardous inorganic and organic contaminants from natural and environmental sources seem to pose the greatest potential for toxicity to consumers of fishery products in the United States. Conflicts In Use: The Impacts Of The Oil And Gas Industry On The Herring Fishery In The North Sea, Cornelia Ann Pasche Jan 1993

Conflicts In Use: The Impacts Of The Oil And Gas Industry On The Herring Fishery In The North Sea, Cornelia Ann Pasche

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The interaction of the herring (Clupea harengus) with the oil and gas industry in the North Sea is reviewed. The population crash of the herring in the early 1970's and the subsequent closing of that important fishery between 1977 and 1983 has drawn considerable attention to the influences, both biotic and abiotic, affecting the recruitment to the North Sea stock. Current accepted theory points to a change in oceanic current and the subsequent decrease in salinity in the North Sea region, resulting in a change in plankton availability for larval herring as the cause of the recruitment failure during the …

The Methodological Characteristics Of An Independent Living Skills Assessment Form For Adolescents In Placement, Susan Maria Lotto Jan 1993

The Methodological Characteristics Of An Independent Living Skills Assessment Form For Adolescents In Placement, Susan Maria Lotto

Open Access Dissertations

Due to a recent upsurge in interest over the success of preparing state supervised youth for independent living, New York State has revised the majority of its regulations concerning how adolescents in placement should be prepared for independent living. The new regulations require that all adolescents in placement, fourteen years of age and over, have their independent living skills periodically assessed. The present research study examined a 140 item inventory, designed to measure the independent living skills of adolescents in placement, in terms of its internal consistency and concurrent validity. In this study 210 subjects, who resided in either the …
