Management Of The Omani Abalone Haliotis Mariae: An Integrated Policy, Kadhim M. Al-Bahrani

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Sultanate of Oman is a small coastal nation with a maritime history, regional trade and fisheries exploitation. Among those fishery industries is Oman's coastal abalone fishery, which command the highest prices per unit of weight among the other marine living resources. This study analyzes the fishery's biological aspects, structure, socioeconomic, policies, and management practices in an attempt to provide an understanding of the prime parameters, that in turn could be utilized for sound management purposes. it also provides a description of an integrated development and management policy for the abalone fishery. Finally, it is hoped that this research will …

The Psychological Modulation Of The Immune System: A Meta-Analysis, Sara D. Cottrill Jan 1995

The Psychological Modulation Of The Immune System: A Meta-Analysis, Sara D. Cottrill

Open Access Dissertations

In the mid seventies, Robert Ader and Nicholas Cohen (1975) conducted and published a series of experiments that are generally recognized as a major turning point for the behavioral and physical sciences. In classical conditioning experiments, Ader and Cohen were able to weaken the immune system reaction against foreign material in rats. The experiments demonstrated that the "self-regulating and autonomous" immune system was vulnerable to behavioral factors. These experiments seemed to galvanize a community of scientists who had hypothesized like scientists and philosophers before them the role of emotional states in influencing physiological processes.

The preeminent discipline which has evolved …

Third Party Reimbursement Of Compounded Prescriptions, Renuka Nair

Open Access Master's Theses

A questionnaire was mailed to the third party providers (n=313) registered with the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP), State Medicaid Programs and Blue Cross plans not listed with the NCPDP. The response rate was 41.5%. The respondents were evaluated for their demographics (number of prescriptions processed, number of subscribers, number of drug benefit models and type of third party) and pre approval process (if they required the provider to obtain pre approval, process of pre approval, time required for giving pre approval and person responsible for obtaining the pre approval). Information was also gathered on drug utilization review …

Regulation Of Lipid Biosynthesis In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae By Fumonisin B1, Wen-I Wu, Virginia M. Mcdonough, Joseph T. Nickels Jr., Jesang Ko, Anthony S. Fischl, Teresa R. Vales, Alfred H. Merrill Jr., George M. Carman

Past Departments Faculty Publications (College of Health Sciences)

The regulation of lipid biosynthesis in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by fumonisin B1 was examined. Fumonisin B1 inhibited the growth of yeast cells. Cells supplemented with fumonisin B1 accumulated free sphinganine and phytosphingosine in a dose-dependent manner. The cellular concentration of ceramide was reduced in fumonisin B1-supplemented cells. Ceramide synthase activity was found in yeast cell membranes and was inhibited by fumonisin B1. Fumonisin B1 inhibited the synthesis of the inositol-containing sphingo-lipids inositol phosphorylceramide, mannosylinositol phosphorylceramide, and mannosyldiinositol phosphorylceramide. Fumonisin B1 also caused a decrease in the synthesis of the major …

Phytoplankton Primary Production And Fish Community Structure In New Bedford Harbor: A Comparison Study To Evaluate Human Impacts, Erica Louise Absher-Mitchell Jan 1995

Phytoplankton Primary Production And Fish Community Structure In New Bedford Harbor: A Comparison Study To Evaluate Human Impacts, Erica Louise Absher-Mitchell

Open Access Master's Theses

This study fulfilled a portion of an ongoing program at the Environmental Protection Agency (Narragansett, RI) to examine cumulative human impacts in New Bedford Harbor, Massachusetts. One of the many changes New Bedford Harbor has experienced since the 1600s has been an increasing urban population along with an increased volume of poorly treated wastewater and combined sewer overflows. In addition to the threat of increased production and anoxia of harbor waters, industrial toxic wastes deposited in the harbor over the last three to four decades have raised concern for the health of estuarine inhabitants. These toxic wastes include the industrial …

Evaluation Of The Reliability Of Serum Cholesterol Measurements, Catherine Rhodes Allan Jan 1995

Evaluation Of The Reliability Of Serum Cholesterol Measurements, Catherine Rhodes Allan

Open Access Master's Theses

Various statistical methods are utilized in the determination of reliable cholesterol measurements via the Reflotron desk-top analyzer. The analysis presented in this research concerns data from the Worksites, Occupational Nurses, and Cholesterol Change Program, a study consisting of volunteers at various worksites in Southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Accuracy and precision tests are utilized to determine reliability of cholesterol measurements. The initial lot testing of reagent strips gives estimates of bias resulting from Reflotron cholesterol measurement. Regression analysis techniques are employed to adjust for this bias. The accuracy testing failed to fall within the guidelines set by the National Cholesterol …

A Transtheoretical Investigation Of Immoderate Drinking In College, Jeffrey Peter Migneault Jan 1995

A Transtheoretical Investigation Of Immoderate Drinking In College, Jeffrey Peter Migneault

Open Access Dissertations

Immoderate alcohol use is prevalent on college campuses and results in high levels of negative consequences including injury, social, academic, and occupational disruption, increased levels of sexually transmitted disease, and emotional complaint. This study applied the Transtheoretical Model of Change to immoderate alcohol use in a cross-sectional study of 629 college students. This model has proven useful as a tool of investigation of and intervention on many other health related behaviors.

The Transtheoretical Model is a model of intentional behavior change that is composed of five interrelated multi-dimensional constructs. This investigation developed measures of four of these constructs. Two measurement …

Regulation Of Phosphatidylinositol:Ceramide Phosphoinositol Transferase In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jesang Ko, Shwuyeng Cheah, Anthony S. Fischl

Nutrition Faculty Publications

Maximal phosphatidylinositol:ceramide phosphoinositol transferase activity was measured in yeast cells harvested during the exponential phase of growth. The addition of inositol to the growth medium resulted in a twofold increase in IPC synthase activity in cells grown in the presence or absence of exogenous choline. Enzyme activity was not regulated in yeast inositol biosynthesis regulatory mutants by the addition of inositol to the growth medium.

Symptoms Of Nitrogen Saturation In A Riparian Wetland, Gay C. Hanson, Peter M. Groffman, Arthur J. Gold Jan 1994

Symptoms Of Nitrogen Saturation In A Riparian Wetland, Gay C. Hanson, Peter M. Groffman, Arthur J. Gold

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Riparian forests are in a unique position in the landscape since they form a transition between uplands and aquatic systems. These ecosystems may be highly susceptible to nitrogen (N) saturation since they may be subject to high inputs of N from upland areas. We measured potential net N mineralization and nitrification, soil inorganic N levels, microbial biomass carbon (C) and N content, and the N content of litter as indicators of N saturation in two riparian zones on the eastern and western sides of a stream. The sites had similar soils, vegetation, and hydrology, but differing upland land use. The …
