Predicting Smoking Cessation In Pregnant Latina And White Women, Ivory Roberts Clarke

Open Access Master's Theses

This study examined cigarette smoking patterns in a low-income sample of pregnant women. The total sample included 142 white women and 56 Latinas. The participants were recruited as current smokers and recent quitters who received prenatal care at six urban health clinics in a northeastern locale. Recent quitters were women who had quit smoking less than one year prior to contact. Predictor variables were examined for both Latinas and white women in order to identify possible differences between the two groups. These variables focused on measures of addiction, social and familial predictors, and demographic information.

Several quantitative procedures were used …

The Effect Of Vitamin E Supplement On Liver Mitochondrial Profiles In Mice, Karen Ann Agostinucci Jan 1999

The Effect Of Vitamin E Supplement On Liver Mitochondrial Profiles In Mice, Karen Ann Agostinucci

Open Access Master's Theses

Cell oxidative damage caused by free radical production during respiration plays a major role in tissue dysfunction. Mitochondria are subcellular sites for oxidative phosphorylation and are the major source of free radicals. Their high oxidative activity makes them susceptible to oxidative damage. Antioxidants protect the cell against oxidative damage, but when defenses are not adequate cells are subjected to oxidative stress. A lack of vitamin E, and selenium results in enlargement ofliver mitochondria, suggesting mitochondrial fusion, and an inability to divide. Recent studies suggest that aging is associated with mitochondrial enlargement and elongation, and that these mitochondria are less oxidatively …

Past Departments Faculty Publications (College of Health Sciences)

Diacylglycerol pyrophosphate (DGPP) is involved in a putative novel lipid signaling pathway. DGPP phosphatase (DGPP phosphohydrolase) is a membrane-associated 34-kDa enzyme fromSaccharomyces cerevisiae which catalyzes the dephosphorylation of DGPP to yield phosphatidate (PA) and then catalyzes the dephosphorylation of PA to yield diacylglycerol. Amino acid sequence information derived from DGPP phosphatase was used to identify and isolate the DPP1(diacylglycerol pyrophosphatephosphatase) gene encoding the enzyme. Multicopy plasmids containing the DPP1 gene directed a 10-fold overexpression of DGPP phosphatase activity in S. cerevisiae. The heterologous expression of the S. cerevisiae DPP1 gene in Sf-9 insect cells resulted in a …

Response Of Primary Producers To Nutrient Enrichment In A Shallow Estuary, Eleanor H. Kinney, Charles T. Roman Jan 1998

Response Of Primary Producers To Nutrient Enrichment In A Shallow Estuary, Eleanor H. Kinney, Charles T. Roman

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Shallow coastal systems worldwide are exhibiting increased algal growth in response to nutrient enrichment. This study evaluates primary production patterns in an estuarine system (Bass Harbor Marsh, ME, USA) receiving low levels of anthropogenic nitrogen. Biomass, areal coverage and in situ oxygen production of green macroalgae, Ruppia maritima, and phytoplankton were measured over a growing season to determine net ecosystem production. Macroalgae and R. maritima exhibited seasonal biomass curves with early summer peaks; however, peak biomass of macroalgae [150 g dry weight (wt) m-2] was substantially greater than R. maritima (33 g dry wt m-2). …

Quantitative Methods For Assessing Change: Application To Condom Use, Kerry E. Evers Jan 1998

Quantitative Methods For Assessing Change: Application To Condom Use, Kerry E. Evers

Open Access Dissertations

This study attempts to understand more about how to quantitatively assess longitudinal change within the Transtheoretical Model applied to the area of condom use among college students. A total of 215 sexually active male and female undergraduate students completed both assessments one month apart. Measurement development was conducted on the Condom Use URICA scale, which was then used in a cluster analysis. A four cluster solution was reliably replicated across two random samples (R2=.99), and the clusters were then examined in terms of their external validity using MANOVAs. The four clusters showed significant differences on variables associated with …

The Development, Characterization And Evaluation Of A Novel Multi-Unit Eroding Matrix System For Poorly Soluble Drugs, Ketan Arvind Mehta Jan 1998

The Development, Characterization And Evaluation Of A Novel Multi-Unit Eroding Matrix System For Poorly Soluble Drugs, Ketan Arvind Mehta

Open Access Dissertations

Mechanisms governing the release of drugs from controlled delivery systems are mainly diffusion, osmosis and erosion. For poorly soluble drugs, the existing mechanisms are limited to osmosis and/or matrix erosion. These mechanisms are commonly employed to control drug release from single unit and multi-unit dosage forms. More recently, multiunit dosage forms have gained considerable popularity for controlled release technology due to their advantages over single unit dosage forms. However, the mechanism of polymer controlled surface erosion from a multi-unit dosage form has never been reported in the literature. This study describes the development, characterization and evaluation of a matrix pellet …

Rna:Dna Ratios As Indicators Of Nutritional Condition In The Copepod Calanus Finmarchicus, M. Wagner, Edward G. Durbin, L. Buckley Jan 1998

Rna:Dna Ratios As Indicators Of Nutritional Condition In The Copepod Calanus Finmarchicus, M. Wagner, Edward G. Durbin, L. Buckley

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

As part of an investigation of ribonucleic acid (RNA) content as an index of growth and nutritional condition of zooplankton in the field, we describe here a method for measuring RNA and DNA in individuals, Stage N5 through adult, of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus. We used the technique to compare total RNA and DNA content and RNA:DNA ratios of C. finmarchicus copepodite stages cultured at different food densities. Copepods reared at growth-limiting phytoplankton concentrations (25 µg carbon l-1) were smaller, had lower RNA:DNA ratios, and contained less total RNA and DNA than did copepods reared in excess …
