Previously, we reported that the streptomycin-treated mouse intestine selected nonmotile Escherichia coli MG1655 flhDC deletion mutants of E. coli MG1655 with improved colonizing ability that grow 15% faster in vitro in mouse cecal mucus and 15 to 30% faster on sugars present in mucus (M. P. Leatham et al., Infect. Immun. 73:8039–8049, 2005). Here, we report that the 10 to 20% remaining motile E. coli MG1655 are envZ missense mutants that are also better colonizers of the mouse intestine than E. coli MG1655. One of the flhDC mutants, E. coli MG1655 ΔflhD, and one of the envZ missense …

Allocation Of Endogenous And Dietary Protein In The Reconstitution Of The Gastrointestinal Tract In Migratory Blackcaps At Stopover Sites, Agusti Muñoz-Garcia, Sarah Aamidor, Marshall D. Mccue, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Berry Pinshow Jan 2012

Mcwilliams, Berry Pinshow

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

During migratory flight, the mass of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and its associated organs in small birds decreases in size by as much as 40%, compared with the preflight condition because of the catabolism of protein. At stopover sites, birds need 2–3 days to rebuild their GIT so that they can restore body mass and fat reserves to continue migration. The source of protein used to rebuild the GIT may be exogenous (from food ingested) or endogenous (reallocated from other organs) or both. Because the relative contribution of these sources to rebuild the GIT of migratory birds is not yet …

Rethinking Placental Transfusion And Cord Clamping Issues, Judith S. Mercer, Debra A. Erickson-Owens Jan 2012

Rethinking Placental Transfusion And Cord Clamping Issues, Judith S. Mercer, Debra A. Erickson-Owens

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

A brief delay in clamping the umbilical cord results in a placental transfusion that supplies the infant with a major source of iron during the first few months of life. Cord circulation continues for several minutes after birth and placental transfusion results in approximately 30% more blood volume. Gravity influences the amount of placental transfusion that an infant receives. Placing the infant skin-to-skin requires a longer delay of cord clamping (DCC) than current recommendations. Uterotonics are not contraindicated with DCC. Cord milking is a safe alternative to DCC when one must cut the cord prematurely. Recent randomized controlled trials demonstrate …

Fasting Serum C‐Peptide Levels Predict Cardiovascular And Overall Death In Nondiabetic Adults, Nileshkumar Patel, H. Taveira, Gaurav Choudhary, Hilary Whitlatch, Wen-Chih Wu Jan 2012

Fasting Serum C‐Peptide Levels Predict Cardiovascular And Overall Death In Nondiabetic Adults, Nileshkumar Patel, H. Taveira, Gaurav Choudhary, Hilary Whitlatch, Wen-Chih Wu

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Background: Insulin resistance, characterized by hyperinsulinemia and normal or elevated serum glucose, is an established precursor to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Despite fasting serum C‐peptide levels being an accurate and stable marker of endogenous insulin production used in patients with diabetes, it is unknown whether C‐peptide could serve as a marker of insulin resistance and predict outcomes in patients without diabetes.

Methods and Results: This is a retrospective cohort study using data from the NHANES‐3 (1988–1994) survey with mortality follow‐up through December 31, 2006. Participants included 5153 subjects, 40 to 74 years of age with fasting glucose ≥70 …

A Critical Review Of Recommendations To Increase Dietary Protein Requirements In The Habitually Active, Linda S. Lamont Jan 2012

A Critical Review Of Recommendations To Increase Dietary Protein Requirements In The Habitually Active, Linda S. Lamont

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Some scientists and professional organisations have called for an increase in dietary protein for those who reach a threshold level of exercise, i.e. endurance athletes. But there are individual scientists who question this recommendation. Limitations in the procedures used to justify changing the recommended daily allowance (RDA) are at issue. N balance has been used to justify this increase; but it is limiting even when measured in a well-controlled clinical research centre. Experimental shortcomings are only exacerbated when performed in a sports or exercise field setting. Another laboratory method used to justify this increase, the isotope infusion procedure, has methodological …

Automatic Identification Of The Number Of Food Items In A Meal Using Clustering Techniques Based On The Monitoring Of Swallowing And Chewing, Paulo Lopez-Meyer, Stephanie Schuckers, Oleksandr Makeyev, Juan M. Fontana, Edward Sazonov Jan 2012

Automatic Identification Of The Number Of Food Items In A Meal Using Clustering Techniques Based On The Monitoring Of Swallowing And Chewing, Paulo Lopez-Meyer, Stephanie Schuckers, Oleksandr Makeyev, Juan M. Fontana, Edward Sazonov

Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The number of distinct foods consumed in a meal is of significant clinical concern in the study of obesity and other eating disorders. This paper proposes the use of information contained in chewing and swallowing sequences for meal segmentation by food types. Data collected from experiments of 17 volunteers were analyzed using two different clustering techniques. First, an unsupervised clustering technique, Affinity Propagation (AP), was used to automatically identify the number of segments within a meal. Second, performance of the unsupervised AP method was compared to a supervised learning approach based on Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC). While the AP method …

Locus Of Control, Decision Making, And Economic Stress, Stephen Favasuli Jan 2012

Locus Of Control, Decision Making, And Economic Stress, Stephen Favasuli

Open Access Master's Theses

Economic stress is associated with a number of adverse psychological, academic and health outcomes. This study investigated the relationship between locus of control and decision making styles in accounting for variation in economic stress among low-income participants. Mothers of preschool children attending day care centers in low income areas completed surveys on locus of control, five decision making styles, and economic stress. It was hypothesized that more internal locus of control would be related to lower levels of economic stress and that the relation between stress and locus of control would be mediated by decision making styles, with dependent and …

Conducting A Hispanic Health Needs Assessment In Rural Kansas: Building The Foundation For Community Action, Melissa Bopp, Elizabeth A. Fallon, Debra J. Bolton, Andrew T. Kaczynski, Susan Lukwago, Alicia Brooks

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Healthy People 2020 states ethnic health disparities are a priority for the US. Although considerable national statistics document ethnic-related health disparities, information specific to rural areas is scarce and does not provide direction for implementing chronic disease prevention programming. Therefore, the purpose of our project was to use the Hispanic Health Needs Assessment (HHNA), a tool designed by the National Alliance for Hispanic Health (NAHH), in culturally diverse, rural Southwest Kansas. Our focus areas included: access to healthcare, heart disease, diabetes, overweight, nutrition, and physical activity.

Methods: The assessment followed six steps: (1) developing the assessment team, (2) data gathering …

Background: Most people do not meet the recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity. Goal setting has been shown to increase health related behaviors such as these, but there has not been extensive research.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between goal setting and fruit and vegetable consumption as well as physical activity to explore the relationship between goal setting and behavior in a web-based intervention for young adults.

Design: This study used a prospective, descriptive design using data from the Project WebHealth study, which used an experimental design. The …

Impact Of The Health It Up Intervention On Plasma Lipids And Glucose In College Students, Shira Hirshberg Jan 2012

Impact Of The Health It Up Intervention On Plasma Lipids And Glucose In College Students, Shira Hirshberg

Open Access Master's Theses

Purpose: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) cause over 2200 American deaths daily and include coronary heart disease (CHD), the fifth leading cause of death in young adults. Those with diabetes mellitus are especially vulnerable to CHD, as heart disease death rates are two to four times higher in this population. Blood lipids and glucose can be used to estimate CVD risk, and include elevated plasma total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triacylglycerol (TAG), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting plasma glucose. Prevalence of these risk factors is evident in college students across …

The Effects Of Whey And Soy Protein Supplementation On Appetite And Dietary Quality In Overweight And Obese College-Aged Individuals, Kerri Alexander Jan 2012

The Effects Of Whey And Soy Protein Supplementation On Appetite And Dietary Quality In Overweight And Obese College-Aged Individuals, Kerri Alexander

Open Access Master's Theses

Background: Over one-third of the United States population is obese. Obesity is a complicated disorder associated with many chronic diseases such as coronary artery disease, diabetes, hypertension and stroke. Many college students are overweight or obese, which may be due to lack of physical activity and unhealthy diets. Both dietary quality and satiety are important factors that may help modify obesity and associated health conditions. The impact of various interventions on these factors has not been clarified. Protein supplementation may be able to improve satiety, but research regarding improvement in diet quality in relation to this supplementation is limited. …

Eating Pace Intervention Classes 3: Female Students At The University Of Rhode Island Feinstein Campus, Ruthann Sampson Jan 2012

Eating Pace Intervention Classes 3: Female Students At The University Of Rhode Island Feinstein Campus, Ruthann Sampson

Open Access Master's Theses

Background: Over one-third of the United States is obese. This weight status is associated with many negative health implications including cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Female college students are a sub-group especially prone to excess kilocalorie (kcal) consumption, leading to weight gain. Consuming food at a fast pace has been associated with increased kilocalorie consumption. Interventions reducing eating rate may be an effective method to reduce kilocalorie consumption in female college students.

Objective: To determine if a 5 week curriculum designed to reduce eating pace would decrease consumption rate (kcal/minute) and total kcal eaten at a control meal, in …

Increasing Breastfeeding In Wic Participants Using Information About Formula Cost As A Motivator, Viviane Fornasaro-Donahue Jan 2012

Increasing Breastfeeding In Wic Participants Using Information About Formula Cost As A Motivator, Viviane Fornasaro-Donahue

Open Access Master's Theses

Despite the widely documented health benefits of breastfeeding, breastfeeding rates continue to fall short of Healthy People 2020 Objectives, particularly among women enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The amount of formula supplied by WIC often is insufficient to fully cover the infant’s demands, thus mothers need to purchase extra cans of formula in addition to what is provided by the WIC Program. However, prior to deciding whether to breastfeed or formula feed their infants, mothers may not be aware of the amount spent monthly on the purchase of extra formula. This information …

Characterization Of Maize Sex-Determination Gene Orthologs In Rice (Oryza Sativa L. Japonica Cv. Nipponbare), John Ventura Jan 2012

Characterization Of Maize Sex-Determination Gene Orthologs In Rice (Oryza Sativa L. Japonica Cv. Nipponbare), John Ventura

Open Access Master's Theses

Ensuring food security will be a crucial problem in the coming decades. Heterosis, the phenomenon where hybrid progeny exhibit increased vigor in comparison to their inbred parents, has been exploited to increase agricultural yield in maize (Zea mays) for decades due to its monoecious reproductive state. Unisexuality in maize is genetically controlled due to the concerted action of the Tassel seed1 (ts1), Tassel seed2 (ts2), and Silkless1 (sk1) genes. Orthologs of the Tassel seed genes and sk1 can be found in the rice genome even though rice maintains an ancestral cosexual floral …

Pseudocalanus Copepods In The Bering Sea: Species Identification Intraspecific Diversity And Biogeography, Jennifer Bailey Jan 2012

Pseudocalanus Copepods In The Bering Sea: Species Identification Intraspecific Diversity And Biogeography, Jennifer Bailey

Open Access Master's Theses

The calanoid copepod genus, Pseudocalanus, is an important secondary producer and widespread throughout the northern hemisphere. While ecologically important, previous work with this genus has been limited due to difficulties in morphometric identification. Here, Pseudocalanus species composition and distribution were examined in the Bering Sea through sequencing of the mitochondrial CO1 gene of 642 individuals from 10 locations. Phylogentic trees of inter- and intra specific diversity demonstrated that in the spring of 2010 (March-June), four species of Pseudocalanus co-existed at various locations across the shelf. Species composition in the middle shelf (50-100 m depth) was significantly different from composition …
