Open Access Dissertations

The glucose oxidase and catalase (GOX/CAT) enzyme system was studied as an inhibitor of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in extracts of whole pink shrimp (Pandalus borealis).

PPO was isolated from shrimp heads and purified by acetone extraction, ultrafiltration, and gel filtration chromatography. A purification of 7.74-fold was obtained with a recovery of 54.3% activity. The shrimp PPO activity was compared to that of mushroom PPO activity. The shrimp PPO was found to have an optimum pH of 6.0-6.5 and to be stable at 25-35 °C. Below freezing, the shrimp PPO was damaged completely and no activity was obtained.

An Analysis Of The Benefits Of Improving Water Quality In Narragansett Bay: An Application Of The Contingent Valuation Method, Karen Marie Hayes Jan 1987

An Analysis Of The Benefits Of Improving Water Quality In Narragansett Bay: An Application Of The Contingent Valuation Method, Karen Marie Hayes

Open Access Master's Theses

Narragansett Bay has long been considered Rhode Island's most valuable natural resource, and the continued discharge of pollutants jeopardizes the environmental integrity of the entire Bay. High pollution levels result in frequent closures of fishing and shellfishing areas, limit the extent of water-based activities such as swimming and boating, and create an undesirable waterfront environment.

Scientists have spent considerable time and money studying Narragansett Bay to determine the sources and extent of pollution. Areawide water quality management plans have been developed to identify the sources and effects of water pollution and to establish programs to help mitigate the serious water …

The Breeding Ecology And Behavior Of Northern Harriers In Coos County, New Hampshire, Patricia Serrentino

Open Access Master's Theses

Northern Harriers (Circus cyaneus) have experienced serious population declines throughout their breeding range in North America. In the northeastern United States, destruction and degradation of wetland habitats and the reforestation of open lands are the primary factors responsible for their decline. The breeding biology and hunting habitat selection and behavior of harriers in Coos County, New Hampshire, were studied in 1984 and 1985 to provide baseline data on this population for management purposes.

In Coos County, incubation and egg-laying begins in mid-May, the nestling period ranges from late June to early August, and the young fledge from the …

Hunt River Groundwater Protection: Analysis And Recommendations, Roland M. Deblois Jan 1987

Hunt River Groundwater Protection: Analysis And Recommendations, Roland M. Deblois

Open Access Master's Theses

The Hunt River, which forms a natural boundary between the towns of East Greenwich and North Kingstown, is directly associated with an extensive groundwater reservoir; the reservoir is an important source of present and future drinking water supplies. Due to the direct effect that land use has on groundwater quality, legislation is needed to ensure that land uses are regulated to protect potable groundwater supplies. While legislation presently exists on the federal and state level to combat drinking water pollutants, local municipalities are in a position to have more site-specific regulatory influence through the establishment of aquifer recharge overlay districts. …

Modulation Of Output From An Isolated Gastropod Heart: Effects Of Acetylcholine And Fmrfamide, P. J. Smith, R. B. Hill Jan 1987

Modulation Of Output From An Isolated Gastropod Heart: Effects Of Acetylcholine And Fmrfamide, P. J. Smith, R. B. Hill

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

In this study, two cardioactive drugs, acetylcholine (ACh) and the tetrapeptide FMRFamide, are perfused through the isolated systemic heart of the gastropod, Busycon canaliculatum. Their effect is examined in terms of the regulation of output, and is then related to the in vivo regulation of stroke volume.

ACh decreases cardiac output by reducing both stroke volume and heart rate. End-diastolic volume and cardiac reserve increase with drug concentration. These effects are accompanied by a slowing in the rise time of the electromyogram prepotential and an increase in the duration of the plateau phase. Low concentrations of FMRFamide increase output …

As Assessment Of The Fisheries Research Program Of The National Marine Fisheries Service, Gary Page Bulmer

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The nation's fishery management regime has three primary sets of players: the scientific advisors, the managers, and the fishermen. The advisors include federal agencies, state agencies, universities, regional and interstate bodies, and international bodies. The National Marie Fisheries Service (NMFS) has the lead role as scientific advisor. As used here "management" is defined broadly to include the instructions and funding that the researchers are given. "Fisheries research" is also defined broadly for the purposes of this paper. It means the collection of any biological, economic, or social information which is relevant to fisheries management.

A Review Of The Management And Current Status Of Northern Fur Seals Of The Pribilof Islands, Holly Hansell

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The North pacific fur seals of Alaska's Pribilof Islands have been subjected to commercial harvest for nearly 200 years. The harvest has been regulated under international agreement almost continuously since 1911; first under the 1911 North Pacific Fur Seal Convention, and following that under the 1957 Interim Convention on Conservation of North Pacific Fur Seals. Both Conventions banned pelagic sealing and divided the restricted land harvest among the four member states, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the Soviet Union. Management under the 1911 convention resulted in a steady increase in the severely depleted fur seal herd, restoring the population …

The Development Of The Shrimp Mariculture Industry In Ecuador And Its Impact On The U.S. Market, Richard A. Norton

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The demand for tropical shrimp is increasing at a much higher rate than other fish and seafood commodities. With this increase in demand, there has been enormous interest to expand global shrimp production. Mariculture, the term used to describe the practice of farming animal and/or plant life from the sea, has created new opportunities and problems for the future of the global shrimp industry. Since shrimp is considered a high-value food commodity, the development has drawn interest from many United States and European investors. One country in particular, Ecuador, which will be the focus of this discussion, has exemplified many …

The Arctic Polar Region is becoming increasingly important in terms of strategic operations. especially on the part of the superpowers. Surrounding the Arctic Ocean are two passages through which international navigation is possible. The Northwest Passage lies within Canada's coastline. and the Northeast Passage. within the Soviet Union's northern shores. Both countries have advanced claims to the effect that the waters of these passages are under their respective exclusive jurisdiction; thus. they are claiming these as their internal waters. The US disagrees and maintains that the waters of those northern Arctic sea routes are international waters. This paper discusses the …

Satellite Remote Sensing And Fisheries Applications, Holly M. Turton Jan 1986

Satellite Remote Sensing And Fisheries Applications, Holly M. Turton

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Satellite remote sensing has the capacity to aid the three major components of a fishery: research, management, and the fishing industry. An evaluation of the potential of satellite-derived data to the fishery is based upon six case studies which are presented as evidence of the capabilities of satellite-borne sensors. Peripheral applications pertaining to the marine environment and possible applications for the future are reviewed. Three basic categories of remote sensing programs related to the fishery are defined: one to test the applicability of the technology to the field of fisheries; another to employ the technology to fisheries research; and a …
