Investment Opportunities In The Nigerian Fishing Industry, Ayotunde M. Giwa
Investment Opportunities In The Nigerian Fishing Industry, Ayotunde M. Giwa
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The major problem facing the Nigerian fishing industry is in its inability to satisfy the demand for tasty yet inexpensive animal protein. Nigeria's marine biological resources are limited and the Gulf of Guinea is among the poorest in the whole of West Africa. Nigeria's population is estimated to have reached about 100 million and is growing at 3.09 per cent per annum. Nigeria's fishing industry is multi-sectoral and composed of the riverine, lake, coastal, estuarine, and culture fisheries. Together they constituted about 1.5 per cent of the GDP in 1976. Up to the present moment, the National has relied on …

Cetacean High-Use Habitats Of The Northeast United States Continental Shelf, Robert D. Kenney, Howard E. Winn
Cetacean High-Use Habitats Of The Northeast United States Continental Shelf, Robert D. Kenney, Howard E. Winn
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Results of the Cetacean and Turtle Assessment Program previously demonstrated at a qualitative level that specific areas of the continental shelf waters off the northeastern U.S. coast consistently showed high-density utilization by several cetacean species. We have quantified, on a multispecies basis and with adjustment for level of survey effort, the intensity of habitat use by whales and dolphins, and defined areas of expecially high-intensity utilization. The results demonstrate that the area off the northeast United States, which is used most intensively as cetacean habitat, is the western margin of the Gulf of Maine, from the Great South Channel to …

The Effectiveness Of Response Prevention In The Reduction Of Avoidance Behavior In Young Rats, Sara Hazard
The Effectiveness Of Response Prevention In The Reduction Of Avoidance Behavior In Young Rats, Sara Hazard
Open Access Master's Theses
A review of the literature on response prevention substantiates that the technique is effective in reducing fear in adult rats. However, the effectiveness of response prevention in reducing avoidance behavior in young rats has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of response prevention on avoidance behavior in young rats and also to evaluate the persistence of fear reduction as a result of response prevention.
Thirty young (24 and 25 days old) albino rats were randomly assigned to receive or not to receive response prevention or to act as control subjects without any avoidance …
Differential Reinforcement Of Other Behavior: Effects Of The Response-Reinforcement Interval, Thomas S. Rieg
Differential Reinforcement Of Other Behavior: Effects Of The Response-Reinforcement Interval, Thomas S. Rieg
Open Access Master's Theses
Forty male rats acquired a lever press response over eight sessions on a fixed interval (FI) schedule of reinforcement. After this acquisition phase subjects were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups involving response elimination. Three of the groups received varying response-reinforcement intervals of 2, 6 and 18 seconds within a differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) paradigm. A reinforcement-reinforcement interval of 10 seconds was used for these animals. A control group receiving a standard extinction (EXT) contingency was also run for this 10 session treatment phase. One 15 minute reaquisition session followed the treatment sessions during which all …
A Planner's Guide To Local Wildlife Conservation Planning And Implementation, Stella Whisler Todd
A Planner's Guide To Local Wildlife Conservation Planning And Implementation, Stella Whisler Todd
Open Access Master's Theses
The goals of this report are to: 1) establish the importance of wildlife conservation planning by local communities, and present important ecological concepts to nonscientists, 2) develop a detailed wildlife planning methodology, which planners can practice in their communities, and 3) explore the legal basis for wildlife conservation zoning, and provide useful examples of local zoning ordinances.
Communities should seek to maintain a diversity of wildlife species, within their geographical boundaries. Wildlife is valuable to the public for a variety of reasons. Animal species provide recreation, education, monetary gain, aesthetics, and a psychological sense of well being to local citizens. …
Maslow Interpreted For The Residential Environment, Leslie Marie Poirier
Maslow Interpreted For The Residential Environment, Leslie Marie Poirier
Open Access Master's Theses
The concept for this study emanated from an enlightening experience I once had while touring several "governmentally - planned" residential developments in northeastern Greece as part of the University of Illinois Summer Program in Greece, 1984. This was my first introduction to the devastating effects of poor planning.
The Greek people in this part of the country have a close relationship with their land which is central to their way of life. The residential developments I witnessed were the antithesis of the residents' natural and rural nature which has been part of their culture for centuries.
The houses were large, …

The Depressor Effect Of Streptozotocin - Induced Diabetes In Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats: The Role Of Vascular Collagen Synthesis, William C. Sessa Jr.
Open Access Master's Theses
ENHANCED VASCULAR COLLAGEN SYNTHESIS HAS BEEN IMPLICATED AS AN ETIOLOGIC FACTOR IN THE DEVEOLPMENT OF SYSTEMIC HYPERTENSION IN VARIOUS ANIMAL MODELS . WITHIN THE AORTA AND RESISTANCE VESSELS OF SPONTANEOUSLY HYPERTENSIVE RATS ( SHR), ACCUMULATION OF FIBROUS PROTEINS (COLLAGEN, EI.ASTIN) AND SMOOOTH MUSCLE CELL HYPERPLASIA AND HYPERTROPHY ARE ASSOCIATED WITH AN INCREASE IN SYSTOLIC ARTERIAL PRESSURE (SAP). FURTHERMORE, AGENTS WHICH LOWER SAP ALSO REDUCE VASCULAR COLLAGEN SYNTHESIS. INITIAL OBSERVATIONS FROM OUR LABORATORY INDICATED THAT STREPTOZOTOCIN - INDUCED DIABETES (8 WEEKS DURATION) LOWERS SAP OF SHR WITHOUT AFFECTING SAP OF NORMOTENSIVE CONTROL WISTAR - KYOTO RATS (WKY). After The Carr-Lynch-Levine Development Strategy: What Next For Downtown Providence, Rhode Island, Mark Trevethan Motte
Open Access Master's Theses
This Master's Research Project examines the manner in which the City of Providence reviewed a development strategy prepared by consultants for its downtown, and attempted to generate proposals for a fresh approach to central city planning and management. A profile of the existing political milieu and economic environment are furnished as a context for critiquing the consultants' report and the City's response to their findings. Case studies of alternative methods for promoting public-private partnerships in central cities are then analyzed as a basis for the development of a prototypical planning and management entity tailored to the needs of downtown Providence, …

Role Of Vascular Reactivity And Collagen Biosynthesis In The Depressor Effect Of Streptozotocin In The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, Paul H. Breault
Open Access Master's Theses
Diabetes decreases systolic arterial pressure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Two possible mechanisms, a decrease in vascular collagen biosynthesis and an altered vascular reactivity, were investigated. Collagen biosynthesis, as indicated by prolyl hydroxylase activity, was reduced in the aorta in the diabetic SHR to a greater extent than the diabetic Wistar-Kyoto rat (WKY). Prolyl hydroxylase activity was also reduced, but to a lesser extent, in the aorta of food restricted and hypothyroid SHR and WKY rats. Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes increased the sensitivity of the mesenteric artery of both strains to methoxamine only. The response of the mesenteric artery of …

The Plastic Hand Of Patriotic And Christian Benevolence: The Work Of The American Home Missionary Society In Illinois And Indiana, 1826-1837, Arnold W. Peterson
Open Access Master's Theses
The American Home Missionary Society represented an evangelical Protestant, interdenominational, voluntary effort to plant churches and related cultural institutions in developing communities on the American frontier. Growing out of the missionary, revivalistic, and social reform concerns of participants in the Second Great Awakening, the Society sought to perpetuate social reform, inculcate individual "virtue," fill the perceived void left by legal disestablishment, and, preeminently, gain converts to evangelical Christianity.
In the first decade of its institutional life the American Home Missionary Society focused its attention on the frontier communities of the Old Northwest and the Mississippi Valley. During the 1820’s and …

The biological and environmental influences on sensorimotor/cognitive development were studied. Participants were 100 children with developmental disabilities between the ages of 2 and 28 months and their families. Scores from the Rochester Research Obstetric Scale (ROS), Pediatric Complications Scale (PdCS), and Home Observation for the Measurement of the Environment (HOME) were used as independent variables in a multiple regression analysis. The dependent variable was the Mental Development Index (MDI) from the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Results indicate there is a significant, but moderate relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Very little overlap was found among the independent variables. …
Opiate Receptor Subtype Modulation Of Dopaminergic Activity The Effects Of Mu, Kappa And Sigma Opiates On The Development Of Dopaminergic Supersensitivity, Robert W. Dunn
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of mu (μ), kappa (κ) and sigma (o) agents namely, morphine (μ), ethylketocyclazocine (κ), SKF 10,047 (σ), pentazocine (κ, o), cyclazocine (κ, σ) and the mu antagonists, naloxone and naltrexone on dopamine mediated behaviors and the development of haloperidol-induced dopaminergic supersensitivity (DA-SS) in the mouse. Three behavioral paradigms were utilized which are predictive of mesolimbic and/or striatal dopaminergic effects: locomotor activity (mesolimbic); apomorphine-induced stereotyped behavior (striatal) and apomorphineinduced climbing behavior (mesolimbic/striatal). Morphine, SKF 10,047, pentazocine and cyclazocine produced increases in locomotor activity suggesting increased dopaminergic activity, while naloxone and naltrexone …

Determination Of Retinol By Aqueous Reverse Phase Open Column System, Abdulaly B. Al-Abdulaly
Open Access Dissertations
The AOAC method and other open column techniques which are used to determine retinol content, are time consuming, require technical skills, and do not always result in a complete separation of retinol from other fluorescent components. In some cases cis-trans isomers are formed due to the long term exposure of retinol to oxygen, light, adsorbents and solvents. The colorimetric method hes disadvantages which include a rapidly fading blue color, sensitivity of the reagent to moisture, and interference from carotenoids. The more recently developed HPLC method is rapid, reproducible, nondestructive, quantitative and gives high resolution of closely related compounds. The instrumentation, …
