Freshwater Gastropods Of Equatorial Africa: Correlations Between Shell Isotope Ratios And Environment, Leo Lawoe Amegashitsi Jan 1988

Freshwater Gastropods Of Equatorial Africa: Correlations Between Shell Isotope Ratios And Environment, Leo Lawoe Amegashitsi

Open Access Master's Theses

A stable oxygen isotopic study of modern African freshwater gastropod shells was carried out to ascertain the feasibility of the use of the stable oxygen isotope ratios of freshwater gastropods as paleoclimatic indicators.

In this study, the oxygen isotope ratios of the freshwater gastropod shell samples taken from the apertures of the individual shells collected at monthly intervals from one site were examined to ascertain their correlatability with weather, temperature, rainfall, water isotope ratios and other ambient conditions. The gastropod shell analysis was by the procedure of Abell (1985) and the water sample analysis by the method of Epstein and …

Sub-Versions Of History In Three Twentieth-Century Novels, Gabriella Schalow Adler Jan 1988

Sub-Versions Of History In Three Twentieth-Century Novels, Gabriella Schalow Adler

Open Access Master's Theses

The novels Nightwood, Genoa, and One Hundred Years of Solitude take intriguing approaches to history which seem to question and subvert certain dominant sociology-cultural attitudes. Not only are we asked to re-view history and its narrative identities, but also to reconsider related issues such as the place of women and desire in history; the body of history; the problem of textuality (history/literature); and the status and identity of the human object.

Traditional humanist criticism is unsatisfactory in considering these problems, so the critical perspective used here derives from Bakhtin and several poststructuralis and feminist theorists. After discussing significant …

The Biology Of Juvenile Scup (Stenotomus Chrysops (L.)) In Narragansett Bay, R.I.: Food Habits, Metabolic Rate And Growth Rate, Mary Sinnamon Michelman Jan 1988

The Biology Of Juvenile Scup (Stenotomus Chrysops (L.)) In Narragansett Bay, R.I.: Food Habits, Metabolic Rate And Growth Rate, Mary Sinnamon Michelman

Open Access Master's Theses

The food habits, metabolic rate and growth rate of juvenile scup (Stenotomus chrysops (L.)) in Narragansett Bay, R.I. were studied during the summer of 1987.

The instantaneous gastric evacuation rate of this demersal fish species was determined in the laboratory. The linear estimate of this rate was 0.17/hour and the exponential estimate was 0.34/hour.

Field studies were performed to determine the feeding periodicity of juvenile members of this species and the types of prey consumed. Scup were found to be daytime and therefore probably visual feeders. The types of prey consumed included polychaetes, mysids and other crustacea, molluscs, and …

The Effect Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On Systolic Arterial Pressure And Aortic Collagen Biosynthesis In The Goldblatt Renovascular Hypertensive Rat, Mark J. Mariani Jan 1988

The Effect Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On Systolic Arterial Pressure And Aortic Collagen Biosynthesis In The Goldblatt Renovascular Hypertensive Rat, Mark J. Mariani

Open Access Master's Theses

Hypertension is associated with elevated rates of collagen synthesis and deposition in the arterial wall. Whether the increased synthesis and accumulation of vascular collagen is a cause or an effect of the elevated blood pressure in animal models of hypertension is still unresolved. Previous studies in this laboratory have indicated that chronic streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes (8 weeks) reduces systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and vascular collagen synthesis in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) without affecting either measurement in the normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) strain. It was not apparent from those studies whether the reductions in SAP and vascular collagen synthesis in the …

A Physico-Chemical Study Of The Complexation Of Cyclodextrins With Pharmaceutical Substances, Francois A. Menard Jan 1988

A Physico-Chemical Study Of The Complexation Of Cyclodextrins With Pharmaceutical Substances, Francois A. Menard

Open Access Dissertations

The complexation of drugs with alpha, beta, gamma and hydroxyethyl beta cyclodextrins was investigated using the solubility method described by Higuchi and Connors. Beta cyclodextrin was shown to exhibit the most extensive complexation. The solubility isotherms of complexation were studied at different temperatures and at various pH conditions. The effect of ionization of drugs on complexation was thus evaluated for four drugs viz phenytoin, diazepam, ibuprofen and hydrochlothiazide. In the case of phenytoin and diazepam, both the non-ionized and the ionized species were shown to form a complex with cyclodextrins. The slope of complexation for ibuprofen and hydrochlorothiazide was found …

The Struggle For Public Beach Access: A Case Study Of Palm Beach County, Pamela Mayer Pogue Jan 1988

The Struggle For Public Beach Access: A Case Study Of Palm Beach County, Pamela Mayer Pogue

Open Access Master's Theses

The decline in the availability of public beach access is hypothesized to be a function of the lack of local government implementation of a state-wide comprehensive plan on beach access. From this general thesis several sub-hypotheses will be tested. To be analyzed are the relationships among the three levels of government; state and federal, state and local, and federal and local governments.

Considering the stated an implied objectives of providing beach access to the population, this problem is relevant socially, economically, and environmentally. This study attempts to analyze the current inefficiencies in the system from a legal, political, socioeconomic, and …

Picture Images Of Girls And Women In Children's Literature, Diane M. Turner-Bowker Jan 1988

Picture Images Of Girls And Women In Children's Literature, Diane M. Turner-Bowker

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the underlying meanings conveyed by media images to preschool age children in three samples of award-winning picture books. One general hypothesis was that female characters would be underrepresented in illustrations found in children's picture books relative to male characters. A second hypothesis was that female characters would more often be portrayed in subordinate and degrading images than male characters. It was predicted that girls/women would be presented more often than boys/men in traditional and passive roles, shorter, below, behind, in deference (bent over, head tilted), as objects of ownership (arm-lock, shoulder-hold, …

In Vivo Colonization Of The Mouse Large Intestine And In Vitro Penetration Of Intestinal Mucus By An Avirulent Smooth Strain Of Salmonella Typhimurium And Its Lipopolysaccharide-Deficient Mutant, Joseph J. Nevola, David C. Laux, Paul S. Cohen Jan 1987

Cohen

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The relative abilities of an avirulent Salmonella typhimurium strain with wild-type lipopolysaccharide (LPS) character, SL5319, and a nearly isogenic LPS-deficient mutant, SL5325, to colonize the large intestines of streptomycin-treated CD-1 mice in vivo and to penetrate colonic mucus in vitro were studied. Previously it had been shown that, when fed simultaneously to streptomycin-treated mice (approximately 1010 CFU each), the S. typhimurium strain with wild-type LPS colonized at 108 CFU/g of feces indefinitely, whereas the LPS-deficient mutant dropped within 3 days to a level of only 104 CFU/g of feces. In the present investigation, when SL5325 was allowed …

Tuna Fishery In The East Central Atlantic Region: The Feasibility Of Nigeria's Participation, Aderemi Olasupo Abioye Jan 1987

Tuna Fishery In The East Central Atlantic Region: The Feasibility Of Nigeria's Participation, Aderemi Olasupo Abioye

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Tuna fishery is widely practiced in the east central Atlantic region by many fleets of different nationality. Most of the catch is taken by distant-water fleets. The new Law of the Sea convention, which gives coastal states an exclusive economic zone with outer limit of 200 miles, now allows the coastal states to make the most use of the living resources in their waters. The surplus shall be allocated to other states in the region and those traditionally fishing in the area before. Nigeria with a population of about 100 million people spends substantial foreign exchange annually on the importation …

Study Of The Ocean Transportation Of Chemicals, Joseph A. Meyertholen Jan 1987

Study Of The Ocean Transportation Of Chemicals, Joseph A. Meyertholen

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The growth of the chemical industry over the past 30 years has contributed significantly to the increased volume of hazardous cargo transported by ocean vessel. The properties of some chemicals in commerce, particularly intermediate products, are such that their movement represents a risk to society in terms of environmental damage, bodily injury, and carcinogenic effects that may not surface for years. This study traces the development of the ocean chemical transportation system with emphasis on the technology, management and regulatory regime that has evolved to control these risks. Selected incidents involving hazardous chemical cargoes are reviewed, highlighting the industry and …

An Analysis Of The Massachusetts Inshore Lobster Fishery, Peter Robertson Hoar Jan 1987

An Analysis Of The Massachusetts Inshore Lobster Fishery, Peter Robertson Hoar

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the limited entry alternative of fishery management by examining the history of a particular limited entry scheme: the Massachusetts inshore commercial lobster fishery license limitation law. A review was made of existing limited entry theory, followed by a description of limited entry programs extant in U.S. fisheries. The legislative and political histories of the Massachusetts lobster fishery limited entry program was then examined. The limited entry law was then analyzed by comparing what actually occurred with what is supposed to occur according to limited entry theory. A quantitative analysis of changes in …

A Multidisciplinary Analysis Of The Imposition Of Countervailing Duties On Canadian Groundfish Imports, Richard A. Pearson Jan 1987

A Multidisciplinary Analysis Of The Imposition Of Countervailing Duties On Canadian Groundfish Imports, Richard A. Pearson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This thesis provides a multidisciplinary analysis of the circumstances which surrounded the successful imposition of a countervailing duty on whole Canadian groundfish, and indicates what implications this action may have for the future. First, it will situate the countervailing duty investigation in terms of its relationship with U.S. statutes, and also with the Nation's international obligations. Then, the impact of the duty is examined to see how it might affect a potential free trade agreement with Canada. Similarly, the thesis projects what effect the duty will have in establishing a precedent, and assesses the likelihood of imposing similar duties on …
