Problems And Opportunities For The Republic Of China In Regard To Distant Water Tuna Fisheries, Chih-I Sha
Problems And Opportunities For The Republic Of China In Regard To Distant Water Tuna Fisheries, Chih-I Sha
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The extension of fishery jurisdiction out to 200 miles from the baselines used to measure the territorial sea by most of the coastal states was the dominant event in global fisheries during the decade of the 1970s. In principle, under extended jurisdiction, the coastal states have the authority to eliminate economic waste and to reduce excessive fishing pressure; on the other hand, the distant water fishing states will have to curtail their fishing activities from the traditional fishing grounds off the coastal states. The Republic of China is a typical distant water fishing state, and is seriously impacted by the …

Cloning And Characterization Of The Aeromonas Caviae Reca Gene And Construction Of An A. Caviae Reca Mutant, David Resnick, David R. Nelson
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
A recombinant plasmid carrying the recA gene of Aeromonas caviae was isolated from an A. caviae genomic library by complementation of an Escherichia coli recA mutant. The plasmid restored resistance to both UV irradiation and to the DNA-damaging agent methyl methanesulfonate in the E. coli recA mutant strain. The cloned gene also restored recombination proficiency as measured by the formation of lac+ recombinants from duplicated mutant lacZ genes and by the ability to propagate a strain of phage lambda (red gam) that requires host recombination functions for growth. The approximate location of the recA gene on the cloned DNA fragment …

Serologic Analyses Of Peromyscus Leucopus, A Rodent Reservoir For Borrelia Burgdorferi, In Northeastern United States, Louis A. Magnarelli, John F. Anderson, Kerwin E. Hyland, Durland Fish, Jay B. Mcaninch
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescent-antibody test were used to detect antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, in Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed mouse). Of the 661 mice captured in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York during 1980 and 1983 to 1987, 166 (25.1%) had antibodies to B. burgdorferi by ELISA. Comparative analyses of 210 serum specimens, collected in areas where Lyme disease is endemic, revealed a threefold difference in sensitivity between the ELISA (38.1% positive) and the indirect fluorescent-antibody method (12.4%). Although prevalence of seropositive P. leucopus was highest during June, elevated amounts …
Roles Of Motility, Chemotaxis, And Penetration Through And Growth In Intestinal Mucus In The Ability Of An Avirulent Strain Of Salmonella Typhimurium To Colonize The Large Intestine Of Streptomycin-Treated Mice, Beth A. Mccormick, Bruce A. D. Stocker, David C. Laux, Paul S. Cohen
Cohen
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
Previously, it had been shown that an avirulent strain of Salmonella typhimurium, SL5316, with wild-type lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was a far better colonizer of the streptomycin-treated CD-1 mouse large intestine, was far more motile, did not bind to mouse intestinal mucus nearly as well as, but penetrated through a layer of intestinal mucus in vitro far better than an almost isogenic LPS-deficient transductant, SL5325. In the present investigation, a nonflagellated transductant, SL5681, and a nonchemotactic transductant, SL5784, were isolated from SL5316 and tested for relative colonizing ability versus SL5316 (smooth) and SL5325 (rough) in streptomycin-treated mice. In addition, the Salmonella …

Colonization Of The Streptomycin-Treated Mouse Large Intestine By A Human Fecal Escherichia Coli Strain: Role Of Adhesion To Mucosal Receptors, Elizabeth A. Wadolkowski, David C. Laux, Paul S. Cohen
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
Escherichia coli F-18, a normal fecal isolate, was previously shown to be an excellent colonizer of the streptomycin-treated CD-1 mouse large intestine, whereas E. coli F-18col-, a derivative of E. coli F-18 that no longer makes the E. coli F-18 colicin, was shown to be a poor mouse colonizer. It was also shown that E. coli F-18 bound two to three times more soluble colonic mucus protein than did E. coli F-18col- and that a major receptor in CD-1 mouse colonic mucus was a 50.5-kilodalton glycoprotein. In the present investigation, an additional E. coli F-18 colonic mucus …

A Case For The Decentralization Of Tuna Management: The East Pacific Tuna Fishery, Mark Alexander Murray-Brown
A Case For The Decentralization Of Tuna Management: The East Pacific Tuna Fishery, Mark Alexander Murray-Brown
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The east pacific tuna fishery has been a highly controversial industry due to a variety of biological, economic and political factors. Tuna are a highly migratory species and are known to move across areas of the ocean that are claimed by different nations. The high economic value of the tuna fishery has enhanced the dispute over the positioning of many of these national boundaries. During the middle of the twentieth century international fishery organizations were created in an attempt to resolve many of the issues. The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) was created to make management recommendations to maintain the …
Academically-Sponsored Coastal Research Vessels In The New England Region: An Assessment Of Current Management And Implications For The Future, Brendan B. Mcavoy
Academically-Sponsored Coastal Research Vessels In The New England Region: An Assessment Of Current Management And Implications For The Future, Brendan B. Mcavoy
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
In New England an informal communications network exists between coastal research vessel operating institutions. Vessel scheduling and operational support has been identified as adequate for the current amount of research being conducted within the region. However, societal shift towards coastal regions is prompting an increase in attention to research within the coastal zone. Current and pending federal initiatives are responding to this increased research need. This, in turn, is beginning to impose greater demands on coastal vessel sea-time. Therefore, a strengthening of the region's inter-institutional communications network may be warranted for the future in order to better coordinate coastal research …

Learned Helplessness As A Function Of Social Structure, William T. Oswald
Learned Helplessness As A Function Of Social Structure, William T. Oswald
Open Access Dissertations
The present study explored the development of learned helplessness. The major question examined whether learned helplessness and its related attributional style were global or situation specific. It was hypothesized that the more bureaucratically structured a situation was perceived to be the more learned helplessness would be manifested. It was argued that the relationship between organizational control and individual commitment could be explained by the reformulated learned helplessness hypothesis.
Subjects in the study were 154 college freshmen and sophomores aged 18 to 24. All subjects completed a questionnaire which assessed individual characteristics (socioeconomic status, locus of control and previous experience in …

The Efficacy Of Response Prevention With Multiple Treatments, Paula J. Martasian
The Efficacy Of Response Prevention With Multiple Treatments, Paula J. Martasian
Open Access Master's Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the effect of repeated Response Prevention (RP) treatments on the persistence of avoidance behavior using an animal model. Response prevention has been used as a treatment in many laboratory studies to reduce avoidance responding. Although past research shows that one episode of RP facilitates extinction of avoidance behavior when tested once, complete elimination of the avoidance response has seldom been found. In fact, some studies have demonstrated the existence and even recovery of residual fear after a single RP treatment indicated by an increase in avoidance behavior upon repeated testings. It was …
The Effects Of Open And Dominant Communication Styles On Perceptions Of The Sales Interaction, Elaine M. Notarantonio
The Effects Of Open And Dominant Communication Styles On Perceptions Of The Sales Interaction, Elaine M. Notarantonio
Open Access Master's Theses
This study empirically tests whether or not different communication styles affect sales effectiveness using the Open and Dominant styles from Norton's (1978) dimensions.
It was hypothesized that the more Open a salesperson is, the more effective the individual will be in selling the product. It was also hypothesized that the more Dominant the salesperson is the more effectives/he will be.
Four groups of students saw videotapes of a sales interaction. Each tape depicted one of the four communicator style types (combinations of high and low levels of Dominance and Openness). The tapes were first pretested on small groups of subjects …
