Population Dynamics In Two Nesting Groups Of The Leatherback Turtle, Dermochelys Coriacea And Implications For Management, M. Tundi Agardy Jan 1989

Population Dynamics In Two Nesting Groups Of The Leatherback Turtle, Dermochelys Coriacea And Implications For Management, M. Tundi Agardy

Open Access Dissertations

The leatherback sea turtle, Dermochelys coriacea, is a highly migratory and pelagic endangered species. Leatherbacks are globally distributed, with pantropical nesting populations frequenting the Caribbean, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. These nesting groups appear to have cohesive and predictable occurrence, but the true demic structure of any population subgroup has never been demonstrated. Using two independent iso-electric focusing •methods to analyze blood proteins, this study showed that the North Atlantic population of leatherback turtles is indeed subdivided into at least two, though probably many more, genetically distinct stocks.

That the Atlantic population of Dermochelys, previously assumed to be …

Changes In Cardiac Function Due To The Interactions Of Diabetes And Hypertension In The Rat, Amy Jane Davidoff Jan 1989

Changes In Cardiac Function Due To The Interactions Of Diabetes And Hypertension In The Rat, Amy Jane Davidoff

Open Access Dissertations

Both clinical and experimental evidence suggest that diabetes mellitus impairs cardiac performance to a greater extent in the presence of hypertension than it does in the absence of hypertension. There is also indirect evidence to suggest that a low thyroid state, which often coincides with experimental and clinical diabetes, may contribute to this impairment. The following study was designed in the hypertensive rat, and to determine whether involvement of attendant hypothyroidism is functionally significant. The hypothesis of this study can be summarized as follows: 1? The marked depression in cardiac performance cause by diabetes in hypertensive rats is associated with …

The Effects Of Albuterol And Chronic Antidepressants On Intracranial Self-Stimulation Reward Thresholds, Robert Louis Dufresne

Open Access Dissertations

Male Sprague Dawley rats implanted with bipolar stainless steel electrodes aimed at the medial forebrain bundle at the level of the hypothalamus were trained to self administer a rewarding current on a 20:10 DRP operant schedule. A procedure based on the psychophysical method of limits was used to determine the threshold of self administration for this stimulus. The effects of the B2-agonist albuterol (salbutamol) on threshold, rearing, and motor activity were examined prior to and after a 19 day period of daily administration of either desipramine 10 mg/kg, fluoxetine 10 mg/kg, or saline.

Acute administration of albuterol 10 mg/kg caused …

Inducing Perceptual Set Effects In Associative Memory Systems, Thomas J. Skrmetti Jan 1989

Inducing Perceptual Set Effects In Associative Memory Systems, Thomas J. Skrmetti

Open Access Master's Theses

This experiment was designed to investigate the mechanisms underlying perceptual set effect. It was hypothesized that a change in synaptic resistance due to previous experience is the operational mechanism underlying perceptual set effect. An associative memory model was used to simulate a simple neural circuit. Experience of the model was manipulated by exposure to a set of unambiguous stimuli. A classification task involving ambiguous stimuli was used to measure perceptual set effect.

Two independent variables were manipulated. The first involved the structure of the stimuli as measured by the Hamming Distance. The second involved the learning rate variable of the …

The Formulation Of Premium-Style Ice Milk, Low In Lactose, Sugar And Fat, Thanos Alagialis Jan 1989

The Formulation Of Premium-Style Ice Milk, Low In Lactose, Sugar And Fat, Thanos Alagialis

Open Access Master's Theses

A low lactose, sucrose-free, fat-free chocolate frozen dessert was developed. This was achieved by combining polydextrose-N as bulking agent, acesulfame-K as sweetener and a microcrystalline cellulose based stabilizer. The product that was developed contained 95 calories per 100 grams.

Lactose reduction of 96% was achieved in all milk products that were used when liquid lactase enzyme was added at 3.5% rate.

The frozen dessert mix that was developed, when flavored with vanilla or strawberry flavoring agents, gave a product with acceptable body and texture, but unacceptable flavor.

As opposed to regular ice cream mixes, viscosity and water activity readings of …

Analysis Of Thiamin By Reverse Phase C18 Open Column Chromatography, Abdullah M. Alyabis Jan 1989

Analysis Of Thiamin By Reverse Phase C18 Open Column Chromatography, Abdullah M. Alyabis

Open Access Master's Theses

A modification of the AOAC method for thiamin determination utilizing reversed phase (RP) C18 packing material was developed for analysis of milk, infant formula and breakfast cereal products. Thiamin was extracted from food samples and hydrolyzed following a similar Association of official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) (1984) procedure. The sample filtrate was purified by passing through the reversed phase C18 column. An isocratic mobile phase consisting of 3% KCl and methanol (70 : 30) was used to elute thiamin from the reversed phase C18 column. The sample eluate was oxidized to thiochrome and quantified on a fluorometer using …

The Relationship Of Land Use And Groundwater Quality: A Case Study Of Rhode Island, Xinhao Wang Jan 1989

The Relationship Of Land Use And Groundwater Quality: A Case Study Of Rhode Island, Xinhao Wang

Open Access Master's Theses

The quality of groundwater used for drinking is critical to consumers. Due to the nature of groundwater flow, pollution source control is important for groundwater protection. Point and nonpoint pollution sources are closely related to land use. The pollution sources that originate from particular land uses must be identified and controlled to prevent degradation of groundwater quality.

This research is a study of the relationship between groundwater quality and land use in Rhode Island State. Water quality data were collected from twenty-one public drinking water wells and land use data were interpreted from air photos. Water quality data and land …

Myocardial Ornithine Decarboxylase Of Hypertensive And Diabetic Rats: Effects Of Insulin And Triiodothyronine Treatment, Michael E. Christe Jan 1989

Myocardial Ornithine Decarboxylase Of Hypertensive And Diabetic Rats: Effects Of Insulin And Triiodothyronine Treatment, Michael E. Christe

Open Access Master's Theses

Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of polyamines, which play a regulatory role in nucleic acid and protein synthesis. The enzyme may be involved in normal and abnormal growth of the myocardium, in the relationship between mechanical stress and protein synthesis, and in the development of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Results from this and other laboratories suggest that experimental diabetes has a more profound effect on mechanical function and cellular growth of hypertrophic heart muscle than it does on nonhypertrophic tissue. Diabetes is associated with reduced serum levels of both insulin and thyroid hormone. …

Response Elimination Using Response-Contingent And Response-Contiguous Schedules, Thomas S. Rieg Jan 1989

Response Elimination Using Response-Contingent And Response-Contiguous Schedules, Thomas S. Rieg

Open Access Dissertations

The experiment collected both molar and molecular data to compare the effect Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior (DRO), Fixed Time (FT), Variable Time (VT), and Extinction (EXT) schedules of reinforcement have on decreasing the frequency of a trained response in rats. The purpose of comparing these schedules was to investigate the relationship between responses and reinforcements in order to determine whether contingency theory or contiguity theory explains the differential effects frequently reported in the literature. Collecting data at both the molar and molecular level allowed a more conclusive theoretical explanation of the suppressive effects seen with these schedules. The experiment …

Relationships Between Communication Style Variables And Sales Effectiveness, Elaine M. Notarantonio

Open Access Dissertations

This research involves two studies which investigated the relationship of communication style variables with effective sales performance. Norton's (1978) communication style construct was used as a guiding framework.

Study 1, examined 74 real estate agents' self-reports of communication style, performance and general sales practices used. In addition, objective measures of respondent's performance were obtained from company records.

A stepwise regression analysis revealed the construct of precise as the only significant predictor of income. A step-wise discriminant analysis showed that the constructs of precise and impression-leaving were significant discriminators among groups of salespeople who were categorized based on income.

A cluster …

Open Access Master's Theses

CDR Hugo William Koehler (1886?-1941), a career officer in the U.S. Navy, was also a prolific writer of letters and despatches. This edited collection of his writings spans the years from 1902 to 1925.

The prologue to the collection describes Koehler’s early life – including speculation that Koehler might have been and illegitimate son of Archduke Rudolph of Austria – as well as Koehler’s education at Harvard and his training at Annapolis.

Koehler’s early naval service included a billet with the Yangtze Patrol in 1911. In 1917 he commanded a sub-chaser squadron in Ireland, where the attended Sinn Fein meetings …

Retention Of Distributed Versus Massed Response Prevention Treatments In An Animal Model, Paula J. Martasian Jan 1989

Retention Of Distributed Versus Massed Response Prevention Treatments In An Animal Model, Paula J. Martasian

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was twofold. One purpose was to examine the efficiency of escape training as a procedure for conditioning fear. The second and main focus was to investigate the efficacy of repeated response prevention treatments and the retention of these treatment effects. Response prevention (RP) has been shown to significantly decrease avoidance behavior in the laboratory setting. However, past research has also shown the return of avoidance behavior over repeated testings. It was hypothesized that increasing the number of RP treatments, and distributing them, would increase the retention of avoidance reduction over repeated testings. It was predicted …
