The Influence Of Area And Habitat On The Avian Community In Red Maple Swamps Of Southern Rhode Island, Jed S. Merrow Jan 1990

The Influence Of Area And Habitat On The Avian Community In Red Maple Swamps Of Southern Rhode Island, Jed S. Merrow

Open Access Master's Theses

Red maple swamps are common throughout the glaciated Northeast and, along with other wetland types, are protected for their wildlife habitat and other functions. Yet there are few descriptions of red maple swamp wildlife communities, and little research on how the wildlife are influenced by habitat features. Several states define jurisdictional wetlands on the basis of wetland size, but the influence of area on wetland wildlife communities is largely unknown.

Birds were censused in 12 mature, very poorly drained red maple swamps in southern Rhode Island. Swamps ranged from 0.49 to 19.24 ha and were placed in four size categories. …

Seasonal Activity Of Ixodes Dammini In Relation To Lyme Disease-Infected White-Footed Mice, Peromyscus Leucopus, Zuhair S. Amr

Open Access Dissertations

This study evaluates the seasonal infestation rates of white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus, harboring immature stages of the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, at three sites on Prudence Island, Rhode Island, USA, a Lyme disease endemic area. Larval infestation rates varied from 46.0 larvae per mouse in August to none at all sites during November, while nymphal infestations ranged from 11.0 per mouse in June to none at all three sites in September through November. At all three study sites, the white-footed mouse appeared to be the most common host species in the wooded areas where larvae and nymphs of …

The Development Of Augustine's View Of The Freedom Of The Will From Conversion To The Confessions, Gregory E. Ganssle Jan 1990

The Development Of Augustine's View Of The Freedom Of The Will From Conversion To The Confessions, Gregory E. Ganssle

Open Access Master's Theses

For much of his life, Saint Augustine was preoccupied with concerns related to the freedom of the In.mm will. If one traces his view of the human will throughout his life, one notices a significant development. In his early writings against the Manichaeans he maintained that the origin of evil can be traced to evil choice. At the very end of his life he came to defend the position that the human will did not have the ability to turn to God apart from divine intervention.

In this study I demonstrate that Augustine’s view of the freedom of the human …

Assessing Beliefs About Depression And Its Treatment, Eliezer Tzvi Margolis Jan 1990

Assessing Beliefs About Depression And Its Treatment, Eliezer Tzvi Margolis

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is motivated by the clinical problem of determining which of two comparably effective modes of treatment (pharrnacotherapy and psychotherapy) a depressed individual would be most likely to benefit from. A cognitive variable, illness beliefs about depression, is proposed as a promising guide for making such patient-treatment mode matches.

A broad area of literature is reviewed in order to learn how beliefs about depression are and have been conceptualized, and to learn what methods, if any, have been previously used to measure them. The review begins with an examination of the prevailing cognitive paradigm and it's failure to consider …

The Effect Of Industrial Development On The Sediment Contamination Of Apponaug Cove, A Historical Analysis, Marina Havan-Orumieh Jan 1990

The Effect Of Industrial Development On The Sediment Contamination Of Apponaug Cove, A Historical Analysis, Marina Havan-Orumieh

Open Access Master's Theses

Sediment cores have long been used to formulate the chronology of environmental contamination. This paper will investigate the utility of sediment cores in determining the chronology of trace metal contamination in Apponaug Cove, Rhode Island. A meter-long sediment core taken from the Cove was analyzed for chromium, copper, lead, zinc and nickel as well as organic pollutants coprostanol, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, benzotriazole and clorobenzotriazole. The core represents a close to 200 year record of sediments in Apponaug Cove. The cultural/economic changes in the Watershed in addition to environmental laws composed in the State and Federal levels which may have correlated with …

Presence Of K88-Specific Receptors In Porcine Ileal Mucus Is Age Dependent, Patricia L. Conway, Agenta Welin, Paul S. Cohen Jan 1990

Presence Of K88-Specific Receptors In Porcine Ileal Mucus Is Age Dependent, Patricia L. Conway, Agenta Welin, Paul S. Cohen

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Ileal mucus and epithelial cells were isolated from newborn piglets that had never been fed and 35-day-old unweaned piglets. Both newborn and 35-day-old piglet mucus preparations supported growth of Escherichia coli Bd 1107/75 08, a K88-fimbriated porcine enterotoxigenic strain, equally well (i.e., generation times of 28 min were observed in both cases). Adhesion of E. coli Bd 1107/75 08 to 35-day-old piglet ileal epithelial cells was, at most, 2 times that of the same strain to newborn piglet ileal epithelial cells; however, adhesion of E. coli Bd 1107/75 08 to 35-day-old piglet ileal mucus was 16 times that of the …

A Site-Specific Need Assessment For Ocean Incineration At The North Atlantic Incineration Site (Nais), Lynne H. Macdonald Jan 1989

A Site-Specific Need Assessment For Ocean Incineration At The North Atlantic Incineration Site (Nais), Lynne H. Macdonald

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This thesis examines the problems of hazardous wastes in the United States-and the problems their disposal present, in particular. Ocean incineration, one of the very few methods available to destroy many highly toxic wastes, is presented as a viable, necessary means to destroy liquid organochlorine wastes. Next, the international and federal regulations governing ocean incineration and the current status of ocean incineration in the United States are reviewed. A site-specific assessment for determining the need for ocean incineration is developed as an alternative to the two currently contended approaches (nationwide versus permit-by-permit need assessments). This site-specific need assessment evaluates the …

Formulation Of A Management Scheme For The Swordfish Fishery Of The Eastern Caribbean, Harold F. Upton Jan 1989

Formulation Of A Management Scheme For The Swordfish Fishery Of The Eastern Caribbean, Harold F. Upton

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

During the 1983 season, two U.S. longline vessels initiated the first attempts at the commercial exploitation of swordfish in the Eastern Caribbean. In 1986, the number of U.S. vessels participating in the fishery surpassed 40 with landings of nearly two million pounds per season. The sudden influx of participants and technology to the region has resulted in a variety of user conflicts and associated policy issues. Major areas of concern involve the conservation of a heavily exploited resource and the distribution of benefits which accrue from resource exploitation among the resource-adjacent island states and U.S. fishing operations. This study examines …

Socioeconomic Aspects Of Small-Scale Commercial Fisheries Development In The Republic Of The Marshall Islands, Cheryl Ann Mandich Jan 1989

Socioeconomic Aspects Of Small-Scale Commercial Fisheries Development In The Republic Of The Marshall Islands, Cheryl Ann Mandich

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This study examines the sociocultural aspects of fishery development in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It is based upon field research conducted through interviews with indigenous fisherfolk, business people, and expatriates. The Marshall Islands were selected because they have a limited economic base, yet have abundant fishery resources which have considerable potential to generate foreign exchange. Many studies focus on the technical aspects of fishery resource development. However, none address the sociocultural factors that influence its success. This thesis demonstrates that several aspects of Marshallese fishing society, some of which correspond to characteristics of the peasantry identified by Rogers …

Antarctic Peninsula Mysticete Whales: Conservation And Research, Gregory Schofield Stone Jan 1989

Antarctic Peninsula Mysticete Whales: Conservation And Research, Gregory Schofield Stone

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper reports original research from two recent studies in the Antarctic Peninsula area, reviews past sighting information and policies affecting mysticete whales, and recommends future research. Due to poor management by the International Whaling Commission, mysticete whales are among the most severely depleted species groups in the Antarctic. The combined total Antarctic harvest from 1920 to 19867 for blue Balaenoptera musculus, fin B. physalus, sei B. borealis, minke B. acutorostrata and humpback Megaptera novaeangliae whales was over one million animals. The effect of this hunting pressure is the dominant factor determing the present status of Antarctic …

North Carolina Ports: A Search For Identity, Clifford S. Sharpe Jan 1989

North Carolina Ports: A Search For Identity, Clifford S. Sharpe

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

North Carolina's development in colonial times and in the early stages of statehood was greatly affected by her coastline. An abundant coastline did not translate into an abundance of good ports, in fact, difficult coastal and inland navigation hampered early commercial development. North Carolina's barrier islands and numerous inlets served as a haven for pirates in colonial days, for privateers during the Revolution, and later defied the North's blockade during the Civil War. There were several attempts by individuals to encourage maritime trade in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Shortly after World War II the state mobilized to …

Perceptions Of The Texas State And Federal Closures Among Inshore Shrimpers In Galveston Bay, Texas And Calcasieu Lake, Louisiana, Nina H. Garfield

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The inshore shrimp fisheries along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico represent a significant portion of the total shrimp harvest in the Gulf. The shrimp harvest is allocated to the offshore and inshore fisheries through the use of season closures. In 1981, the Gulf of Mexico Regional Fisheries Management Council began implementing a policy known as the Texas Closure; a seasonal closure of the waters of the Federal Conservation Zone concurrent with the traditional season closure of the state waters of Texas. One impact of the Texas Closure on the offshore fishery has been fleet displacement from Texas to …
