Development Of High Performance Liquid Chromatographic Separations For The Purification And Analysis Of Phospholipids And Related Liponucleotides - A New Class Of Anti-Aids Drugs, John V. Amari

Open Access Dissertations

High performance developed to isolate phospholipids and liquid chromatographic methods were and purify naturally occurring synthetic experimental Anti-AIDS liponucleotides on a preparative scale. Separations were optimized on packed with an analytical size method development column, the same media used in the preparative separations. A phospholipid class separation, on a silica stationary phase, was developed for the isolation of lecithin in chicken egg yolk. The collected fractions were analyzed for purity by analytical HPLC with UV and light scattering detection. Liponucleotides have been synthesized and required HPLC for purification. The methodology was based upon conventional phospholipid species separations on reversed-phase supports. …

Experientially-Modulated Neuronal Death In Overconnected Neural Networks, Thomas J. Skrmetti Jan 1991

Experientially-Modulated Neuronal Death In Overconnected Neural Networks, Thomas J. Skrmetti

Open Access Dissertations

This experiment was designed to examine the possible physiological mechanisms underlying the formation of critical periods in development. It was hypothesized that experientially-modulated neuronal death, coupled with an overconnected neural network, and acting early in the developmental sequence, could produce a learning effect similar to that described as a "critical period effect."

A computer-based associative memory model was used to simulate a simple neural network representing the associative cortex. Three different independent variables were manipulated in the experiment. The first was the type of connectivity matrix used when the model was initialized prior to training.

Four different developmental paradigms were …

Development Of A Stages Of Change Model For Sun Exposure, Linelle M. Blais Jan 1991

Development Of A Stages Of Change Model For Sun Exposure, Linelle M. Blais

Open Access Master's Theses

A model of readiness to reduce sun exposure was developed and tested using factor analytic, structural modeling, and cluster analytic techniques, and employing double cross-validation procedures. This model is based on the stages of change model developed by Prochaska & DiClemente (1983) which posits that people pass through a series of stages in their attempts to change behavior: Precontemplation (not intending to change); Contemplation (seriously considering change); Action (actively engaged in change); and Maintenance (successfully sustained change). A 35-item questionnaire measuring the four stages of change was administered to 595 participants in a worksite health promotion program. Six competing measurement …

The Economics Of Land Conservation: A Case Study Of Block Island, Rhode Island, Amy H. Bell Jan 1991

The Economics Of Land Conservation: A Case Study Of Block Island, Rhode Island, Amy H. Bell

Open Access Master's Theses

In the l980's, coastal communities in the northeast were subject to heightened demand for residential and commercial land uses. This increased demand combined with the reality of a fixed resource has resulted in growing conflict between the preservation of open space and development. As municipal leaders attempt to balance expenditures with revenues, they often question if it is fiscally and economically prudent to invest in the protection of open space. Yet, environmental quality, attained in part by the conservation of open space, is often the basis for sustaining the quality of life and the economic vitality of coastal communities.

The …

The Effect Of Planning And Development On The Potable Groundwater Quality In Bermuda, Melody Ruth Thomas Jan 1991

The Effect Of Planning And Development On The Potable Groundwater Quality In Bermuda, Melody Ruth Thomas

Open Access Master's Theses

A concern for groundwater quality and its supply is universal in communities where it is either their sole or ancillary potable water supply. Bermuda is no exception, but, like many island communities, it must devise strategies to continue its status quo of self-sufficiency in regards to its water supply, although this has not always been the case. Bermuda is one of the most attractive tourist resorts islands in the Atlantic Ocean, (although it is not classified among the Caribbean Islands) therefore extreme effort is made for it to remain competitive in the tourist market. While such attempt have proven to …

The Impact Of The Rhode Island Duplicate Prescription Law On Prescribing Practices For Schedule Ii Drugs, Bridgit A. Anness Jan 1991

The Impact Of The Rhode Island Duplicate Prescription Law On Prescribing Practices For Schedule Ii Drugs, Bridgit A. Anness

Open Access Master's Theses

Multiple copy prescription laws have been implemented or proposed in several states to better track the distribution of drugs in Schedule II to the ultimate consumer. The states with such statutes report a 30 to 50 percent decrease in the number of Schedule II prescriptions written as well as a reduction in diversion of these drugs and forgeries. Risk factors were assessed for the effect of the Rhode Island Duplicate Prescription program on prescribers. A questionnaire was mailed to all prescribers (N=3016) registered with the Rhode Island Department of Health Division of Drug Control to prescribe Schedule II drugs. The …

Development Of A New Non-Surgical Perfusion Technique To Evaluate Nasal Drug Delivery, Polireddy Dondeti Jan 1991

Development Of A New Non-Surgical Perfusion Technique To Evaluate Nasal Drug Delivery, Polireddy Dondeti

Open Access Master's Theses

Peptide and protein drugs are increasingly becoming popular with the advances in biotechnology. Although these compounds are highly potent and display superior pharmacological profiles, there are various barriers to their systemic delivery. Most of these barriers are related to the properties of the proteins and peptides which include high large molecular size, susceptibility to proteolytic breakdown, tendency to undergo aggregation, adsorption, and denaturation. Most of these molecules are delivered by parenteral administration due to the low bioavailability obtained by the oral route. Among the noninvasive routes of drug administration, the nasal route seems to be a potential alternative to parenteral …

Nietzsche On Truth And Overcoming, Paul Swift Jan 1991

Nietzsche On Truth And Overcoming, Paul Swift

Open Access Master's Theses

Nietzsche on Truth and Overcoming traces the development of Friedrich Nietzsche's epistemic criticism. Nietzsche's outright denial of the existence of truth is grounded in his claim that stable metaphysical entities do not exist. The following inquiry examines Nietzsche's method of doubting which compels him to dismiss "being" as a fictitious "perspectival falsification".

Nietzsche's denial of the reality of pre-existent "being" creates problems with communicating what he means through normal language. Nietzsche on Truth and Overcoming elucidates the problems which Nietzsche creates through his uprooting of being and provides Nietzsche's hint as to where mankind might still look for …

Volunteer Community Service Work And Its Effect On The Moral Development Of Ethics Students, Judith A. Boss Jan 1991

Volunteer Community Service Work And Its Effect On The Moral Development Of Ethics Students, Judith A. Boss

Open Access Master's Theses

This study investigated the effects, in terms of moral development, of having undergraduate students engage in volunteer work with a community service agency as part of their course requirement.

The subject population consisted of 71 college ethics students enrolled in two classes of about equal size. Both classes met the same length of time, on the same days, and had the same teacher. One class, the experimental group, was required to complete twenty hours of volunteer work and keep a journal of their experiences. The other class, the control group, received a choice of a more traditional essay assignment or …

Seasonal Patterns Of Sedimentary Carbon And Anaerobic Respiration Along A Simulated Eutrophication Gradient, P. Sampou, Candace A. Oviatt Jan 1991

Seasonal Patterns Of Sedimentary Carbon And Anaerobic Respiration Along A Simulated Eutrophication Gradient, P. Sampou, Candace A. Oviatt

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Concentrations of organic carbon and rates of dissimilative sulfate reduction in surface sediments of marine mesocosms were examined along an experimental eutrophication gradient. Phytoplankton biomass increased due to addition of inorganic nutrients (N. P, Si). This increase was especially pronounced during the winter spring diatom blooms, which increased in magnitude and duration along the nutrient gradient. Net system production in winter and spring resulted in carbon deposition and accumulation in surface sediments (maximum net accumulation 17 mol C m-2). Benthic remineralization of carbon exceeded depositional supply during summer and fall. Sediment carbon concentrations approached background levels in December …

Accumulation, Persistence, And Elimination Of Microbial Indicators By Molluscan Shellfish, William Burkhardt Iii Jan 1991

Accumulation, Persistence, And Elimination Of Microbial Indicators By Molluscan Shellfish, William Burkhardt Iii

Open Access Dissertations

The accumulation of fecal coliforms and several other indicator microorganisms (Escherichia coli, enterococci, Clostridium perfringens, and male-specific bacteriophage) by hard-shelled clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) was investigated with regard to season and temperature. Very high rates of accumulation were found for each of these indicator organisms during distinct periods in the spring. Uptake of indicators during these periods exceeded 2 SD of the mean annual accumulation rates. Except for these periods of 'hyper-accumulation', uptake of the indicators is at least partially temperature dependent. In general, bacteriophage and C. perfringens were accumulated by clams at significantly higher rates …
