Characterization And Identification Of A Porcine Small Intestine Mucus Receptor For The K88ab Fimbrial Adhesin, John W. Metcalfe, Karen A. Krogfelt, Howard C. Krivan, Paul S. Cohen, David C. Laux
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
The ability of Escherichia coli K-12(K88ab) to adhere to immobilized porcine small intestine mucus was examined. E. coli K-12(K88ab) but not the isogenic E. coli K-12 strain was found to adhere readily to immobilized crude mucus but not to bovine serum albumin. The adhesion of E. coli K-12(K88ab) was inhibited in a specific fashion by anti-K88 antiserum. Adhesion was also inhibited by pretreatment of receptor-containing crude mucus preparations with sodium metaperiodate or proteolytic enzymes. Removal of glycolipids from crude mucus by chloroform methanol extraction did not affect the ability of E. coli K-12(K88ab) to bind to mucus preparations. Adsorption of …

Evaluation Of An Escherichia Coli Host Strain For Enumeration Of F Male-Specific Bacteriophages, James Debartolomeis, Victor J. Cabelli
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
A method was developed for the selective enumeration of F male-specific bacteriophages in samples of environmental waters. The host strain for the phages, Escherichia coli HS(pFamp)R, has three antibiotic resistance markers, ampicillin on the Famp plasmid, which codes for pilus production, and streptomycin and nalidixic acid on the chromosome. The strain is resistant to coliphages T2 to T7 and φX174. More than 95% of the phages from environmental samples which plaqued on the host strain were F male specific. The host bacterium had a higher plaquing efficiency than E. coli K-12 Hfr for F-specific phages in stock suspensions and sewage …
Behavioral Analysis Of The Escape Response In The Juvenile Lobster Homarus Americanus Over The Molt Cycle, S. I. Cromarty, J. Stanley Cobb, Gabriele Kass-Simon
Behavioral Analysis Of The Escape Response In The Juvenile Lobster Homarus Americanus Over The Molt Cycle, S. I. Cromarty, J. Stanley Cobb, Gabriele Kass-Simon
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
1. Components of the escape response of the American lobster were compared over the molt cycle. Number of tailflips, frequency, duration and distance were measured. Velocity, acceleration, force and work were computed from the above measurements, using time-lapse video-recordings of escaping lobsters.
2. Soft-shelled postmolt lobsters (stage B) traveled further, spent more time tailflipping and performed a larger number of tailflips than hard-shelled premolt lobsters (stage D). Hard-shelled lobsters had a more forceful initial power swim, achieved a higher overall velocity and acceleration and, therefore, produced more forceful swims with greater energy expenditure (measured by work output) than soft-shelled animals. …

Mariculture Management For Pohnpei State, Federated States Of Micronesia, Kevin Brooks Foster
Mariculture Management For Pohnpei State, Federated States Of Micronesia, Kevin Brooks Foster
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The Marine Resources Division of Pohnpei State, Federated States of Micronesia is currently engaged in development activities that include the establishment of family scale mariculture projects for community members of remote villages and outer islands. The goal of this undertaking is to supplement subsistence and income generation ventures for community members through the wise use and exploitation of the marine environment. These aims may be jeopardized unless a management plan is devised that reflects the customary marine resource practices as embraced by islanders from each community. The intent of this thesis projects is to devise a mariculture management model that …
Factors Influencing The Role Of Women In Indonesian Fisheries Development, Melissa A. Upton
Factors Influencing The Role Of Women In Indonesian Fisheries Development, Melissa A. Upton
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Gender consideration is an essential component of fishery development activities. The purpose of this thesis is to help guide planners and decision-makers who are concerned with understanding the role of women in fisheries development in general as well as in the Republic of Indonesia. Thus, it is partially based upon field research conducted in Indonesia among fishing communities which are representative of different types of fisheries. Justification for research concerning the role of women in the fisheries sector and the reasons why women should be included in development policy and planning are presented in Chapter I. The general research setting, …
The Gulf Of California As A Large Marine Ecosystem, Patricia A. Morrissey
The Gulf Of California As A Large Marine Ecosystem, Patricia A. Morrissey
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Large marine regions characterized by unique bathymetry, hydrography and productivity, within which marine populations have adapted reproductive, growth, and feeding strategies constitute large marine ecosystems (LME) (Sherman and Alexander, 1986). The Gulf of California a semi-enclosed sea off the western coast of Mexico qualifies as a LME as it presents physical and biological characteristics not found in the adjoining Pacific. This area sustains the largest commercial fishery in the country which is the sardine fishery. the sardine population resident in the Gulf of California has coupled its reproductive and migration strategies to the environment of this region. Fluctuations of the …
Prospects For Fisheries Development In West Africa, Steven K. Ireland
Prospects For Fisheries Development In West Africa, Steven K. Ireland
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The production of food is a primary concern for the countries of Africa. Marine fisheries can contribute toward alleviating undernutrition and provide employment opportunities in developing countries. In West Africa there are substantial marine fisheries resources but there is a need for development and improved management of these resources. Fisheries development efforts have thus far achieved limited success in the region. However, there is considerable potential for increasing the contribution of fisheries to economic development if the problems of fisheries development can be overcome.
Possibilities For A Common Fisheries Development And Management Policy For The Organization Of Eastern Caribbean States (O.E.C.S.), Daven C. Joseph
Possibilities For A Common Fisheries Development And Management Policy For The Organization Of Eastern Caribbean States (O.E.C.S.), Daven C. Joseph
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The fisheries resources within the EEZs of countries in the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States is not being exploited at their maximum sustainable yield. Fisheries development has however been hampered by a history of these states, little or no sectoral development planning. If member states are to realize any increased socio-economic growth in the fisheries sector, it is imperative that a common fisheries management and development strategy be implemented by these states, in an effort to rationalize the use of scarce financial and technical resources. Such a strategy would involve the pursuance of common goals and objectives and the provision …
The Siia: A Mechanism For Addressing Pollution Problems Plaguing New Jersey's Coastal Zone, Laurie J. Sands
The Siia: A Mechanism For Addressing Pollution Problems Plaguing New Jersey's Coastal Zone, Laurie J. Sands
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
New Jersey has been plagued in recent years by beach closures resulting from elevated bacteria levels after rainfall events. The Sewage Infrastructure Improvement Act (SIIA) was adopted to correct these problems by addressing both point and nonpoint sources of pollution found in discharges of stormwater. However, there are problems with the SIIA such as overly burdensome requirements, limited resources and lack of future funding and direction. This research identifies these problems and examines existing State and federal legislation to find the necessary components to correct these concerns. The results show that by pursuing a legislative amendment to the SIIA, redistributing …
Striped Bass Management In Rhode Island, Thomas N. Fetherston Ii
Striped Bass Management In Rhode Island, Thomas N. Fetherston Ii
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The management of highly migratory marine species is a difficult and complex task. No creature better represents the myriad problems faced by those attempting interstate fisheries management than the striped bass of the Atlantic coast. Their high stock levels in the late 1960s attracted unprecedented attention from commercial and sport fishermen alike. The dramatic crash of these stocks in the late 1970s, subsequent attempts at coastwide management, eventual Federal intervention and finally the rebound of the Atlantic striped bass population is an interesting case study. This paper will focus on what transpired in the State of Rhode Island during this …

Malaysia And The Law Of The Sea, Mohd Fadzil Shuhaimi
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The new legal regime of the oceans has brought many changes in the Malacca Strait. The most recent one in the enactment of the Malaysian Exclusive Economic Zone Act 1984 as corollary to its proclamation on the Exclusive Economic Zone in 1980. A year later, the Fisheries Act 1985 was enacted by Malaysia as a result of increasing needs to address new issues in fisheries protection and management in the Malaysian fisheries waters. The conclusion of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, among other things, has improvised the concept of transit passage in the straits …
Atypical Hepatic Vacuolated Cell Lesion In The White Perch Morone Americana, A. C. Camus, Richard E. Wolke
Atypical Hepatic Vacuolated Cell Lesion In The White Perch Morone Americana, A. C. Camus, Richard E. Wolke
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
This report details histopathological findings of atypical vacuolated hepatocytes in the white perch Morone americana. Vacuolated cell lesions have been reported from a number of species in association with degraded habitats, often in the presence of hepatic neoplasms. Extensive atypical vacuolated cell lesions assuming characteristic acinar or ductular configurations have been reported previously only from the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus. Light microscopic findings, utilizing a variety of histochemical stains, suggest the identical nature of this lesion to that of winter flounder. The discovery of this lesion in a free-swimming species, feeding throughout the water column, is in direct …

Assessment Of Organizational And Financial Needs Associated With Stormwater Management For Water Quality In The Greenwich Bay Watershed In Warwick, Rhode Island, Laura J. Prickett
Assessment Of Organizational And Financial Needs Associated With Stormwater Management For Water Quality In The Greenwich Bay Watershed In Warwick, Rhode Island, Laura J. Prickett
Open Access Master's Theses
Over the past several years there has been a growing awareness of water pollution problems in Greenwich Bay, a subembayment of Narragansett Bay which contains valuable shellfish beds. Studies have shown that water quality problems in the bay are due largely to nonpoint source pollution, which is conveyed by stormwater runoff. Nonpoint source pollution can be treated with a variety of source-control and structural techniques to manage stormwater, known as best management practices, or BMP's. Establishing storm water BMP' s to address water quality is often complicated by the fact that stormwater management has historically been a low priority for …

Groundwater is an important drinking water resource in the United States, especially in rural areas, unconnected to larger public systems, where it provides 96% of the drinking water supply (Travis and Etnier, 1984) . Approximately 50% of all U. S. residents rely on groundwater as their source of drinking water, using 88 billion gallons a day (Patrick et al. 1987). Within the State of Rhode Island, 24% of the population depends on groundwater and 8% utilize private drinking wells (USGS, 1988). Groundwater withdrawals in Rhode Island average 37 million gallons per day and uses include public and private water supply, …
