Physico-Chemical Characterization Of Shark-Fins, Adel M. Al-Qasmi Jan 1994

Physico-Chemical Characterization Of Shark-Fins, Adel M. Al-Qasmi

Open Access Master's Theses

Shark-fins are one of the most expensive fish products in the world that fetch high prices in the oriental market. The value of the fins depends on the species, size and quantity of fin needles. These factors are largely determined by the intrinsic chemical and physical characteristics of the shark-fins which this study addressed.

In order to formulate the relationship between body size and fin sizes of sharks, seven hundered and sixty-six shark specimens were measured and recorded from landing sites in Oman between July, 1991 to June 1992. The regression of body size in relation to the fin sizes …

Demography And Habitat Use Of Desert-Dwelling Mountain Sheep In The East Chocolate Mountains, Imperial County, California, Nancy G. Andrew Jan 1994

Demography And Habitat Use Of Desert-Dwelling Mountain Sheep In The East Chocolate Mountains, Imperial County, California, Nancy G. Andrew

Open Access Master's Theses

I undertook a two year study in June 1992 to describe the demography and habitat use of desert-dwelling mountain sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) inhabiting the East Chocolate Mountains, Imperial county, California. For demographic parameter description I collected data using ground observations, remote cameras, and helicopter surveys on 25 adult mountain sheep (17 females, 8 males) that had been captured and fitted with radio-collars in 1992. I used Bailey's (1952) method to estimate the population of males and females, in 1992 and 1993. Telemetry data indicated the presence of two female sub-populations. Based upon ground observations and on helicopter …

Environmental And Coastal Land Use Analysis: A Plan To Remediate Bacterial Pollution In Rhode Island's Greenwich Bay, Michael E. Brusseau Jan 1994

Environmental And Coastal Land Use Analysis: A Plan To Remediate Bacterial Pollution In Rhode Island's Greenwich Bay, Michael E. Brusseau

Open Access Master's Theses

In December of 1992, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management temporarily closed Greenwich Bay to shellfishing after finding dangerously high levels of fecal coliform. The closure of the Bay to shellfishing has resulted in an estimated loss of $4 million to the City of Warwick, annually. Furthermore, pollution in Greenwich Bay has begun to threaten tourism, recreational activities, environmental quality, and public health.

A comprehensive environmental/land use analysis is conducted to identify potential sources of bacterial pollution and to estimate the impacts these sources are having on the Bay's water quality. Sources of bacterial contamination include: failing septic systems …

A Marina Leasing Proposal For The State Of Rhode Island, William A. Archambault Jan 1994

A Marina Leasing Proposal For The State Of Rhode Island, William A. Archambault

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis examines whether Rhode Island has the authority to lease marinas their submerged lands, and if so, is the fee structure of the CRMC's proposed plan equitable to marinas in the State?

The thesis determined that under the powers of the Public Trust Doctrine, Rhode Island has the right to implement a marina leasing program, but implementation of a program may prove to be problematic for the State. The thesis identified that the CRMC's proposed lease rate would be inequitable to marinas in Rhode Island. Marinas subject to the CRMC program would pay the same lease fee per slip, …

Systematic Studies To Evaluate The Effects Of Vehicles On The In Vivo Drug Delivery To The Skin, Sudhanva R. Marathe Jan 1994

Systematic Studies To Evaluate The Effects Of Vehicles On The In Vivo Drug Delivery To The Skin, Sudhanva R. Marathe

Open Access Master's Theses

Current trend in evaluating dermatological formulations is shifting towards measuring the retention of drugs in the skin rather than flux through the skin. This study was undertaken to emphasize the importance of drug retention and to investigate possible factors which affect it.

An in vivo hairless rat model was used in this study to evaluate the effect of 26 vehicles on the local drug delivery to the skin layers. For this purpose, two model drugs, 3H-Hydrocortisone (HC) and 3H-triamcinolone acetonide (TAC), were used. Vehicles selected belonged to seven different classes including glycols, polyglycols, alcohols, esters, glycerides, mixed commercial …

Formulation Of An Oral Modified Releasedosage Form Of An Adrenergic Drug, Suresh Palaniswamy Jan 1994

Formulation Of An Oral Modified Releasedosage Form Of An Adrenergic Drug, Suresh Palaniswamy

Open Access Master's Theses

Albuterol, a sympathomimetic amine is a potent selective Beta adrenergic agonist. As a result it is used as a bronchodilator to treat chronic obstructive airway diseases in adults and childrens. The drug has a short half-life of 3-4 hours and must be administered 3-4 times daily to maintain a therapeutic concentration.

This investigation was undertaken to study the in-vitro drug release characteristics of the marketed product under conditions that mimic in-vivo dissolution behavior. It was determined that the original marketed product released the initial dose in first half an hour and then the second dose after a period of 5-6 …

Experimental Method Of Treating The Leachate Using Various Physical Chemical Processes, Sureshreddy Basireddy Jan 1994

Experimental Method Of Treating The Leachate Using Various Physical Chemical Processes, Sureshreddy Basireddy

Open Access Master's Theses

The leachate collected on the West side of the Johnston, Rhode Island Central Landfill contains iron, manganese and total oil and grease. This leachate must be treated to the pretreatment standards of the City of Cranston Water Pollution Control Facility before being discharged into the Cranston sewer system. A batch study was conducted to evaluate the coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation system required for treating the leachate. In this batch study the jar test was conducted to obtain the data for developing a regression model. Using the developed regression model and trial and error, three different sets of design parameters were evaluated. Using these …

Altruism In College Volunteers: Relationships To Prosocial Personality, Constructive Thinking, And Parenting Variables, Sara S. Little Jan 1994

Altruism In College Volunteers: Relationships To Prosocial Personality, Constructive Thinking, And Parenting Variables, Sara S. Little

Open Access Dissertations

Altruism--acting with the goal of benefiting another, despite costs to oneself--has been the subject of many studies, yet its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Laboratory studies have relied on isolated instances of contrived helpfulness, while investigations of actual rescuers and humanitarians are typically small and lack controls. Some investigators have suggested that altruism is merely a function of situation (c.f., Latane & Darley, 1968). Others, however, have found robust relationships between altruism and personality (c.f., Batson, 1991).

This study investigated sustained, planned altruism in a sample of 469 undergraduates from four major New England Universities. The hypotheses were that altruism, operationalized …

Girls' And Boys' Beliefs About Adult Work: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A School-Based Program, Deborah M. Dutton Jan 1994

Girls' And Boys' Beliefs About Adult Work: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A School-Based Program, Deborah M. Dutton

Open Access Dissertations

This project evaluated the effectiveness of a short-term educational intervention program intended to alter sex-role beliefs of children regarding adult careers using a non-equivalent control group design. Participants were second and fifth grade students from a New England elementary school. Dependent measures were The Occupational Choice Survey (OCS), The Stereotypic Occupational Scale (SOS), The Children's Sex-Role Inventory (CSRI), and The Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC). Interventions included reading fictional and nonfictional literature of adults in nontraditional work roles, followed by a guided discussion, and a panel discussion with adults in traditional and nontraditional roles, followed by a guided discussion. The …

The "Fine Line" Of Otto Rank, Philip J. Hecht Jan 1994

The "Fine Line" Of Otto Rank, Philip J. Hecht

Open Access Dissertations

Otto Rank, more than just psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, was a compassionate human being. The humanity reflected in his work is the subject of this dissertation and I have shown how his ideas can illuminate historical figures and fictional characters in literature and film.

Chapter one examines Rank's "fine line" in order to outline the difficult path that all must travel in life, and some of the methods that are chosen to cope with experience. To Rank, this is a balancing act between acts of creative will and choices influenced by anxiety, guilt, and fear of life and death. Rank …
