Isolation Of Borrelia Burgdorferi From Saliva Of The Tick Vector, Ixodes Scapularis, Curtis Ewing, Angelo Scorpio, David R. Nelson, Thomas N. Mather

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

A method for cultivating and isolating Lyme disease spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi, from the saliva of vector ticks, Ixodes scapularis (formerly known as Ixodes dammini), is described. Saliva was collected from partially engorged ticks after application of pilocarpine to induce salivation. B. burgdorferi was isolated from 8 of 14 (57%) of the saliva samples derived from ticks infected with the bacteria, as determined by direct immunofluorescent-antibody assay of tick hemolymph. A comparison of the protein profiles of the salivary isolates and a highly passaged strain (B31) showed that the salivary isolates all lacked a 22-kDa protein known to …

The first objective of the research is to provide a socioeconomic description of …

A Marina Leasing Proposal For The State Of Rhode Island, William A. Archambault Jan 1994

A Marina Leasing Proposal For The State Of Rhode Island, William A. Archambault

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This thesis examines whether Rhode Island has the authority to lease marinas their submerged lands, and if so, is the fee structure of the CRMC's proposed plan equitable to marinas in the State? The thesis determined that under the powers of the Public Trust Doctrine, Rhode Island has the right to implement a marina leasing program, but implementation of a program may prove to be problematic for the State. The thesis identified that the CRMC's proposed lease rate would be inequitable to marinas in Rhode Island. Marinas subject to the CRMC program would pay the same lease fee per slip, …

The Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy: A Comparison With The Approach Of The Unep Regional Seas Programme, Vinton Valentine Jan 1994

The Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy: A Comparison With The Approach Of The Unep Regional Seas Programme, Vinton Valentine

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In the past two decades, there has been a rise in the number of multilateral regional agreements for marine environmental protection. A large proportion of these regional agreements are the result of the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Regional Seas Programme. While there are thirteen regional seas under the Programme, the Arctic Ocean is not, and never was, one of them. In describing concerns regarding the Arctic environment and approaches to handle them, a number of commentators have proposed the application of UNEP Regional Seas Programme approach to the Arctic region. However, despite an attempt from the Inuit Circumpolar Conference …

The Persian Gulf Oil Spill: A Case Study Of Emerging International Law On Environmental Damages During Hostilities, Esther J. Mcclure Jan 1994

The Persian Gulf Oil Spill: A Case Study Of Emerging International Law On Environmental Damages During Hostilities, Esther J. Mcclure

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

During the 1991 Persian Gulf War, the retreating Iraqis caused the deliberate discharge of six million barrels of oil into the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf. The immediate impact on the ecosystem was dramatic, and, because of the intense media coverage of the conflict, highly visible to the American public. The spill popularized the term 'ecoterrorism' and raised serious questions about the applicability of international law to the situation. There are numerous conventions that seek to establish standards of due diligence for the prevention of accidental pollution and to impose civil liability on those who damage the environment, but …

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

We sought to validate an in vitro system which could predict the minimal effect dose of antiretroviral agents. Mixtures of uninfected CEM cells and CEM cells chronically infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 MN were exposed to 2',3'-didehydro-3'-deoxythymidine (D4T) in vitro in a hollow-fiber model which simulates the plasma concentration-time profile of D4T in patients. Drug concentration was adjusted to simulate continuous intravenous infusion, or an intravenous bolus administered twice daily. The effect of the dosing regimen was measured with viral infectivity, p24 antigen, and reverse transcriptase or PCR for unintegrated HIV DNA. Dose deescalation studies on a …

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

The pharmacodynamics of dosage regimens of piperacillin alone or in combination with tazobactam against piperacillin-resistant or -susceptible bacteria were studied in an in vitro model of infection. Experiments were conducted by using a fixed daily exposure of 12 g of piperacillin, given as 3 g alone or in combination with tazobactam at 0.375 g every 6 h, or the same total dose of the combination given as 4 g of piperacillin plus 0.5 g of tazobactam every 8 h. The addition of tazobactam to piperacillin, irrespective of the dosing interval, did not alter the killing of piperacillin-susceptible organisms (Escherichia …

Quantitative Eeg Effects Due To Task Related Processing Of Lateralized Auditory Continuous Performance Tests, Separate From Attentional And Motor Components Of The Tasks, Sherri M. Gold

Open Access Dissertations

Quantitative EEG data were obtained for 22 male college students during a Resting condition and during performance of three continuous performance tests (CPT) that differed in the demands on linguistic processing. Previous EEG studies from our laboratory have indicated a relationship between left hemisphere beta power and performance of an auditory CPT that requires processing of phonetic stimuli. The participant listens to a series of letters and responds by pressing a button whenever the same letter is repeated twice in a row. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that left hemisphere EEG beta may reflect processing of language …

Aspects Of Nesting Ecology Of The Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin) In Rhode Island, Caitlin C. Goodwin Jan 1994

Aspects Of Nesting Ecology Of The Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin) In Rhode Island, Caitlin C. Goodwin

Open Access Master's Theses

I studied the only known nesting population of diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) in Rhode Island at Nockum Hill Wildlife Sanctuary, Barrington, Bristol County and characterized aspects of the nesting behavior and ecology of this population, described nest site habitat characteristics and factors affecting nest success, and compared my findings to other described Malaclemys populations. A total of 241 nests was found at Nockum Hill in 1993. Terrapins tended to nest in the morning and near the time of high tide. Mammalian predators, primarily raccoons, destroyed 75 of 86 monitored nests. Fifty-five percent of the surviving clutches were oviposited …

Histochemistry Of Spore Mucilage And Inhibition Of Spore Adhesion In Champia Parvula, A Marine Alga, Martha E. Apple

Open Access Dissertations

Spores of the marine red alga, Champja parvula, attached initially to plastic or glass cover slips by extracellular mucilage. Adhesive rhizoids emerged from germinating spores, provided a further basis of attachment and rhizoidal division formed the holdfast. Mucilage of holdfasts and attached spores stained for sulfated and carboxylated polysaccharides. Rhizoids and holdfast cells but not mucilage stained for protein. Removal of holdfasts with HCI revealed protein anchors in holdfast cell remnants. Spores detached when incubated in the following enzymes: β-galactosidase, protease, cellulase, α-amylase, hyaluronidase, sulfatase, and mannosidase. The FITC- lectins Con A, LCA, PNA, SBA, and the lectin from …
