My Cambodian Son: Another Race: Another Culture, Patricia Russell Jan 1995

My Cambodian Son: Another Race: Another Culture, Patricia Russell

Open Access Master's Theses

This paper describes my experiences in raising a child of another culture, acknowledging both the rewards and heartbreaks that go along with such a venture. The child, Mao Sam, a Cambodian boy, came into my life at a time when I was sure that I had finished with the task of rearing children, having already raised three biological children--all daughters. I will detail the changes in my life and in the life of my family as we cared for a child from another race, another country.

In the first chapter, I briefly describe Mao Sam's cultural background; I show his …

An Investigation Of Cadmium, Copper And Nickel In The Colloidal Size Range In Seawater, Jennifer M. Greenamoyer Jan 1995

An Investigation Of Cadmium, Copper And Nickel In The Colloidal Size Range In Seawater, Jennifer M. Greenamoyer

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis contains the results of an investigation of Cd, Cu and Ni in the colloidal size-range in seawater. The main objectives are: 1) to evaluate an Osmonics cross-flow filtration system for submicron sampling of Cd, Cu and Ni; and 2) to directly assess the concentration of Cd, Cu and Ni in truly dissolved (<1,000 NMW), colloidal (1,000 NMW-1 μm) and particulate (>1 μm) size-fractions in the Gulf of Maine.

A 1,000 nominal molecular weight (NMW) spiral wound cross-flow filtration (CFF) membrane has been evaluated for sampling Cd, Cu and Ni in <1,000 NMW and >1,000 NMW fractions of prefiltered seawater. Mass balance results averaged 93 ± 6% (Cd), 81 …

North American Sea Urchin Fishery Management Strategies: Their Applicability To The Maine Green Sea Urchin Fishery, Kate Sullivan Jan 1995

North American Sea Urchin Fishery Management Strategies: Their Applicability To The Maine Green Sea Urchin Fishery, Kate Sullivan

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Maine green sea urchin fishery has experienced dramatic growth since its inception in 1987. Landings have increased from 1.4 million pounds in 1987 to 41.6 million pounds in 1993 (NMFS, Fisheries Statistics). The reproductive gonads, referred to as roe or 'uni' are shipped fresh from Maine to japan, where the uni is a delicacy item fetching high unit prices on the Japanese fish market. The green sea urchin from Maine, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, is the third highest priced sea urchin product imported in Japan (Anon., 1989). Country-wide, sea urchin fisheries are one of the fastest growing fishing industries (Phu, …

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Management, Jeffrey C. Fisher Jan 1995

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Management, Jeffrey C. Fisher

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) and federal management under the U.S. National marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has certainly been contentious. Atlantic bluefin tuna have been managed at the international level by ICCAT for the past 25 years. NMFS is the organization responsible for implementing ICCAT recommended conservation and management measures in the United States. In an attempt to halt an apparent decline in the abundance of bluefin tuna in the western Atlantic, ICCAT has recommended strict management measures including catch quotas, minimum sizes, "no-sale" provisions, and spawning area protection since 1981. ICCAT had recommended in …

Us Fish And Wildlife Service 1979 Wetland Classification: A Review, Lewis M. Cowardin, Francis C. Golet Jan 1995

Us Fish And Wildlife Service 1979 Wetland Classification: A Review, Lewis M. Cowardin, Francis C. Golet

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

In 1979 the US Fish and Wildlife Service published and adopted a classification of wetlands and deepwater habitats of the United States. The system was designed for use in a national inventory of wetlands. It was intended to be ecologically based, to furnish the mapping units needed for the inventory, and to provide national consistency in terminology and definition. We review the performance of the classification after 13 years of use. The definition of wetland is based on national lists of hydric soils and plants that occur in wetlands. Our experience suggests that wetland classifications must facilitate mapping and inventory …

Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Bull Creek, South Carolina, Richard Oliver Petricig Jan 1995

Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Bull Creek, South Carolina, Richard Oliver Petricig

Open Access Dissertations

During studies of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Bull Creek, a natural tidal channel in the Spartina marsh system of the Calabogue Sound estuary in South Carolina, 46 individual bottlenose dolphins were identified photographically between August 1988 and July 1993. Twenty-two of these were judged to be permanent or year-round residents of the site based on resightings in 70% or more of the 17 surveyed seasons. Five hundred thirty-eight dedicated boat-based surveys revealed an average density of 3.9 dolphins/km2. Small, but statistically significant, differences in mean dolphin densities were noted between years and seasons of the …

An Alternative School: An Alternative Solution, Elaine C. Lee Jan 1995

An Alternative School: An Alternative Solution, Elaine C. Lee

Open Access Dissertations

The increased incidence of violent behaviors by adolescents has had a significant impact on society. Because these behaviors are now being seen more frequently in school settings, the need for alternative forms of education has become apparent to administrators throughout the country.

The purpose of this study was to determine if an alternative high school program using Montessorian philosophy would enhance academic relevance, improve academic achievement, enhance social development, and improve the emotional well-being of the Socially and Enotionally Maladjusted adolescent.

The participants were 18 students diagnosed as Socially and Emotionally Maladjusted. The treatment group was comprised of 12 students …
