Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Ixodid ticks were collected from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and British Columbia (Canada) during 1991 to 1994 to determine the prevalence of infection with hemocytic (blood cell), rickettsia-like organisms. Hemolymph obtained from these ticks was analyzed by direct and indirect fluorescent antibody (FA) staining methods with dog, horse, or human sera containing antibodies to Ehrlichia canis, Ehrlichia equi, or Rickettsia rickettsii. Of the 693 nymphal and adult Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, Ixodes scapularis, and Ixodes pacificus ticks tested with dog anti-E. canis antiserum, 209 (32.5%) contained hemocytic bacteria. The prevalence of …

Nonlinear Demographic Dynamics: Mathematical Models, Statistical Methods, And Biological Experiments, Brian Dennis, Robert A. Desharnais, J. M. Cushing, R. F. Costantino Jan 1995

Nonlinear Demographic Dynamics: Mathematical Models, Statistical Methods, And Biological Experiments, Brian Dennis, Robert A. Desharnais, J. M. Cushing, R. F. Costantino

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Our approach to testing nonlinear population theory is to connect rigorously mathematical models with data by means of statistical methods for nonlinear time series. We begin by deriving a biologically based demographic model. The mathematical analysis identifies boundaries in parameter space where stable equilibria bifurcate to periodic 2—cycles and aperiodic motion on invariant loops. The statistical analysis, based on a stochastic version of the demographic model, provides procedures for parameter estimation, hypothesis testing, and model evaluation. Experiments using the flour beetle Tribolium yield the time series data. A three—dimensional map of larval, pupal, and adult numbers forecasts four possible population …

Growth Of Escherichia Coli K88 In Piglet Ileal Mucus: Protein Expression As An Indicator Of Type Of Metabolism, Lena Blomberg, Lena Gustafsson, Paul S. Cohen, Patricia L. Conway, Anders Blomberg

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The physiological and molecular responses of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 strain Bd 1107/7508 during growth in piglet ileal mucus and lipids extracted from mucus were studied in terms of growth rate, protein expression, and rate of heat production. E. coli K88 multiplied at maximum speed in mucus and in lipids extracted from mucus. By two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of [35S]methionine-labelled cells, it was demonstrated that the synthesis of a subclass of 13 proteins was changed at least fourfold during exponential growth in mucus compared with growth in M9 minimal medium. Ten of these proteins were repressed, while three were …

Assessing The Impact Of Amendment 2 To The Summer Flounder Fishery Management Plan: Implications Of State-By-State Quotas For Vessel Operators, Karen Ellis Greene Jan 1995

Assessing The Impact Of Amendment 2 To The Summer Flounder Fishery Management Plan: Implications Of State-By-State Quotas For Vessel Operators, Karen Ellis Greene

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The state-by-state quota regulation contained in Amendment 2 to the Summer Flounder Fishery Management Plan became effective on January 1, 1993. The research sought to determine the implications that the state-by-state quotas have imposed on federal summer flounder permit holders. commercial fishermen were believed to have landed their summer flounder out-of-state to take advantage of more favorable possession limits in other states, and to have accrued higher costs as a result of their decisions to land out-of-state. A survey was administered to commercial fishermen in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and North Carolina, to ascertain behavioral changes, as a result of state-by-state …

International Management Of The Western Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Fishery: Is There A Need For A Cites Listing?, Jennifer Elling-Dodge Jan 1995

International Management Of The Western Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Fishery: Is There A Need For A Cites Listing?, Jennifer Elling-Dodge

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In the last two decades, the Atlantic bluefin tuna has been increasingly targeted by fishermen throughout the world, primarily for sale in Japan. Commercial fishermen, attempting to survive in a world of declining commercial catches, increased controls on fishing effort, and increasing competition, view the U.S. $50.00 or more per kilogram that might be obtained from bluefin as a financial bonanza. yet, the population of breeding adult bluefin in the western Atlantic (the focus of bluefin fishing, since the largest bluefin consistently occur there) has declined by an estimated 77% to 90% since the 1970's. In addition, the eastern Atlantic …

The National Marine Sanctuary Designation Process And Its Impact On Naval Operations, Gregory E. Bolan Jan 1995

The National Marine Sanctuary Designation Process And Its Impact On Naval Operations, Gregory E. Bolan

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This paper addresses the basis of potential and real conflicts derived by the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) process, as identified within and between NOAA and the United States Navy. This conflict is often exacerbated due to either a lack of communication, coordination, or both. A recent proliferation of proposed and designated marine sanctuaries in traditional Naval operating areas has complicated or hindered Naval operations (or will) to a degree where EIS derived restrictions negatively impact the Naval operations, based on (1) response readiness, and (2) increased cost of operations. Two specific conflicts are examined in a case study approach …

Management Of The Omani Abalone Haliotis Mariae: An Integrated Policy, Kadhim M. Al-Bahrani

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Sultanate of Oman is a small coastal nation with a maritime history, regional trade and fisheries exploitation. Among those fishery industries is Oman's coastal abalone fishery, which command the highest prices per unit of weight among the other marine living resources. This study analyzes the fishery's biological aspects, structure, socioeconomic, policies, and management practices in an attempt to provide an understanding of the prime parameters, that in turn could be utilized for sound management purposes. it also provides a description of an integrated development and management policy for the abalone fishery. Finally, it is hoped that this research will …

An Assessment Of The Safety Of Navigation: The Malaysian Perspective In The Straits Of Malacca, Amir Bin Murad Jan 1995

An Assessment Of The Safety Of Navigation: The Malaysian Perspective In The Straits Of Malacca, Amir Bin Murad

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The traffic movements in the Straits of Malacca (SOM) have been ever increasing over the past few years resulting in numerous marine casualties that have caused serious concern to the Government of Malaysia. Current characteristics of navigation in the SOM present a potential major catastrophe. The first hypothesis is that there is a positive relationship between traffic movement and the number of marine casualties. Thus, an increase in traffic movement will result in an increased risk of marine casualties. The second hypothesis is that the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) did not change the overall trend of marine casualties that occurred …

The Rhode Island Marine Fisheries Council: Stewardship In Need Of Goals And Objectives, Robert Censabella Jan 1995

The Rhode Island Marine Fisheries Council: Stewardship In Need Of Goals And Objectives, Robert Censabella

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In the State of Rhode Island, marine fisheries are managed through the Marine Fisheries Council, a citizen-based regulatory body of nine members from either the commercial or recreational fishing industries or experienced with the conservation and management of fisheries resources. To ostensibly help this group make informed decisions, biological data and scientific advice are provided by the State Division of Fish and Wildlife. This thesis examines the decision-making process of this Council. More specifically, it provides a case study of how this body has attempted to manage the State's winter flounder stocks-an economically-valuable species which confines its life cycle mostly …

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Research Faculty Publications

A-77003, a human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) protease inhibitor, is effective for both acute and chronic infection in vitro and was evaluated clinically by continuous intravenous infusion administration. The minimum effective dose (the concentration required to completely inhibit viral replication) was determined in vitro in a population of uninfected (99%) and HIV-infected (1%) cells exposed to A-77003 by continuous infusion in hollow-fiber bioreactors. The production of infectious HIV and release of p24 antigen from infected cells were completely inhibited in cultures exposed to A-77003 at or above a concentration of 0.5 μM. Measurement of unintegrated HIV-1 DNA synthesis and …

Ammonium Uptake And Regeneration Rates In A Coastal Upwelling Regime, Mary-Lynn Dickson, Patricia A. Wheeler Jan 1995

Ammonium Uptake And Regeneration Rates In A Coastal Upwelling Regime, Mary-Lynn Dickson, Patricia A. Wheeler

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Ammonium uptake and regeneration rates were measured in time course experiments with 15N as a tracer. Both ammonium uptake and regeneration rates measured over 12 to 18 h remained essentially constant. However, as the length of the incubations increased the amount of usable data decreased dramatically due to substrate depletion and recycling of 15N. Mass balance calculations indicated that 22 to 51% of the ammonium removed from the dissolved pool was not recovered in the particulate fraction. This appeared to be a more serious problem at 0 and 8 m (47%) than at 25 m (22%). As a …

Transcendence As A Human Response To Life Threatening Illness: Description And Understanding Through Narratives, Jane Williams Jan 1995

Transcendence As A Human Response To Life Threatening Illness: Description And Understanding Through Narratives, Jane Williams

Open Access Dissertations

This study explored the phenomenon of transcendence as it occurs in the context of life-threatening illness. Transcendence is a term that is frequently used to describe a patient's response to suffering, but it is an elusive, poorly understood phenomenon.

Narrative interviewing and analysis was the method. Participants diagnosed with terminal cancer provided personal accounts of their experience during in-depth interviews. Three participants were interviewed after being selected by professional nurses working in an oncology clinic as having transcended their illness. The linguistic approach to systematic study of the accounts

(Gee, 1985, 1986, 1991; Riessman, 1993) and the voice-centered relational method …

The Psychological Modulation Of The Immune System: A Meta-Analysis, Sara D. Cottrill Jan 1995

The Psychological Modulation Of The Immune System: A Meta-Analysis, Sara D. Cottrill

Open Access Dissertations

In the mid seventies, Robert Ader and Nicholas Cohen (1975) conducted and published a series of experiments that are generally recognized as a major turning point for the behavioral and physical sciences. In classical conditioning experiments, Ader and Cohen were able to weaken the immune system reaction against foreign material in rats. The experiments demonstrated that the "self-regulating and autonomous" immune system was vulnerable to behavioral factors. These experiments seemed to galvanize a community of scientists who had hypothesized like scientists and philosophers before them the role of emotional states in influencing physiological processes.

The preeminent discipline which has evolved …

The Influence Of Formulation And Device Variables On The Intransasal Absorption Of Salmon Calcitonin, Ramneik Dua

Open Access Dissertations

The nasal administration of drugs, particularly peptides, is very beneficial but like other mucosal routes, suffers from low bioavailability for the higher molecular weight compounds. The nasal bioavailability of peptides and proteins is influenced by the dosage form as well as the devices used for administration. In the present study an effort was made to investigate the effect of formulation and device variables on the intranasal delivery and absorption of salmon calcitonin (sCT). The formulations were designed as nasal sprays with viscosity of 1 and 76 cps using methylcellulose as a viscosity enhancing agent at 0 and 1% w/w; tonicity …

Biogeography Of The Bog Copper Butterfly (Lycaena Epixanthe) In Southern Rhode Island Peatlands: A Metapopulation Perspective, Joanne M. Michaud Jan 1995

Biogeography Of The Bog Copper Butterfly (Lycaena Epixanthe) In Southern Rhode Island Peatlands: A Metapopulation Perspective, Joanne M. Michaud

Open Access Master's Theses

The bog copper butterfly (Lycaena epixanthe) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) inhabits patchily distributed open peatlands throughout the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. To examine the relationship between habitat patch geometry and occupancy by L. epixanthe in southern Rhode Island, I surveyed 37 apparently suitable bogs and fens for adult butterflies, and measured various aspects of habitat quality related to patch size and isolation. Host plant patch size, size of the nearest occupied host plant patch, and distance to the nearest occupied host plant patch contributed significantly to the discrimination of occupied from unoccupied sites. During the two-year study period, …

A Policy Alternative For Municipalities To Acquire (And Preserve) Open Space, Mark K. Young Jan 1995

A Policy Alternative For Municipalities To Acquire (And Preserve) Open Space, Mark K. Young

Open Access Master's Theses

Development pressures existing in the United States today have been responsible for the substantial disappearance of formerly available open space. The general public perception is that the landscape/view is changing and that the change is not necessarily good. The loss of open land has brought public pressure on policy makers to decide the best use of remaining open space. Should it be left to developers to make the determination or should a community assert its own self-determined vision guided by professional expertise?

The Effects Of Methylene Blue Pretreatment On Global Ischemia In The Isolated Rat Heart, Stephen Robert Gorman Jan 1995

The Effects Of Methylene Blue Pretreatment On Global Ischemia In The Isolated Rat Heart, Stephen Robert Gorman

Open Access Master's Theses

The phenomena of cardiac ischemia and reperfusion involve substantial, multifactorial pathophysiologic derangements, the attenuation of which is vital for the functional recovery and viability of the heart. It has been proposed that methylene blue (MB) may decrease the damage associated with ischemia and reperfusion, in part by the suppression of oxyradical generation and by the enhancement of ATP recovery. In the present study, we tested the effect of pretreating isolated working rat hearts with MB prior to imposing ischemia and reperfusion. Hearts were treated for ten minutes with either 0.1 μM, 1.0 μM, or 10.0 μM MB, or given no …

Effectiveness Of Enacting Stories Versus Discussing Art Projects To Facilitate Story Comprehension And Recall, Tina Hopkins Jan 1995

Effectiveness Of Enacting Stories Versus Discussing Art Projects To Facilitate Story Comprehension And Recall, Tina Hopkins

Open Access Master's Theses

Story Enactment has been found to be an effective follow-up to reading for enhancing comprehension. This study was designed to determine if combining art projects with discussions could be as effective as enacting stories as follow-up activities to enhance story comprehension and recall. The subjects participating in this study were twelve children (four groups of three children each) from the same PreKindergarten/Kindergarten class at Carriage House Day Care in Cranston, RI. The children participated in four one-hour small group story and activity sessions within their regular preschool setting. Two of the sessions used enacting the story (Story Enactment) as the …
