Dowson, Eshwar Mahenthiralingam

Peninsula Dental School

ABSTRACT Burkholderia cenocepacia can cause serious infections and epidemics in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). A CF population in the Czech Republic experienced an epidemic outbreak caused by a B. cenocepacia ST-32 strain. The clonality of the isolates was evident by multilocus sequence typing; however, fingerprinting profiles obtained by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) showed substantial band variability. We investigated whether the PFGE pattern diversity resulted from genomic rearrangements mediated by insertion sequences (IS); in addition, we determined whether stressful growth conditions altered the transposition activity of these IS. DNA probes for IS commonly found in B. cenocepacia were designed using …

Community Responses To Tourism And Crime, P Brunt, N Hooton Jan 2010

Community Responses To Tourism And Crime, P Brunt, N Hooton

Plymouth Business School

Tourism is known to bring about positive and negative changes to destinations. This paper explores how tourism business owners’ lives and residents within the tourism area of an English seaside resort respond in their behaviour as a consequence of tourism-related crime and their fear of such crimes. Through a mixture of primary and secondary data analysis it is clear that crime in the case study area increases during the tourism season. The results suggested that these are changes in behaviour made by parking in different locations; socialising differently; bypassing specific streets at night; and carrying out additional security checks in …

When Not Thinking Leads To Being And Doing: Stereotype Suppression And The Self, Na Wyer, G Mazzoni, Tj Perfect, G Calvini, Hl Neilens Jan 2010

When Not Thinking Leads To Being And Doing: Stereotype Suppression And The Self, Na Wyer, G Mazzoni, Tj Perfect, G Calvini, Hl Neilens

School of Psychology

Suppressing stereotypes often results in more stereotype use, an effect attributed to heightened stereotype activation. The authors report two experiments examining the consequences of suppression on two self-relevant outcomes: the active self-concept and overt behavior. Participants who suppressed stereotypes incorporated stereotypic traits into their self-concepts and demonstrated stereotype-congruent behavior compared to those who were exposed to the same stereotypes but did not suppress them. These findings address issues emerging from current theories of suppression, priming, and the active self.

A Review Of Bast Fibres And Their Composites. Part 2 - Composites, John Summerscales, Nilmini Dissanayake, Amandeep Virk, Wayne Hall

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Bast fibres are defined as those obtained from the outer cell layers of the stems of various plants. The fibres find use in textile applications and are increasingly being considered as reinforcements for polymer matrix composites as they are perceived to be "sustainable". The fibres are composed primarily of cellulose which potentially has a Young's modulus of similar to 140 GPa (being a value comparable with man-made aramid [Kevlar/Twaron] fibres). The plants which are currently attracting most interest are flax and hemp (in temperate climates) or jute and kenaf (in tropical climates). Part 2 of this review will consider the …

Visuospatial Tasks Suppress Craving For Cigarettes., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Nathalie Panabokke, David Kavanagh Jan 2010

Visuospatial Tasks Suppress Craving For Cigarettes., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Nathalie Panabokke, David Kavanagh

School of Psychology

The Elaborated Intrusion (EI) theory of desire posits that visual imagery plays a key role in craving. We report a series of experiments testing this hypothesis in a drug addiction context. Experiment 1 showed that a mental visual imagery task with neutral content reduced cigarette craving in abstaining smokers, but that an equivalent auditory task did not. The effect of visual imagery was replicated in Experiment 2, which also showed comparable effects of non-imagery visual working memory interference. Experiment 3 showed that the benefit of visual over auditory interference was not dependent upon imagery being used to induce craving. Experiment …

Less Food For Thought. Impact Of Attentional Instructions On Intrusive Thoughts About Snack Foods., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Helen Batey, Lisa Marie Berry, David J. Kavanagh

School of Psychology

Intrusive thoughts about food may play a role in unhealthy eating behaviours. Food-related thoughts that capture attention can lead to craving and further intrusive thoughts (Kavanagh, Andrade, & May, 2005). We tested whether diverting attention to mental images or bodily sensations would reduce the incidence of intrusive thoughts about snack foods. In two experiments, participants reported their thoughts in response to probes during three 10min periods. In the Baseline and Post-task period, participants were asked to let their mind wander. In the middle, Experimental, period, participants followed mind wandering (Control), thought diversion, or Thought Suppression instructions. Self-directed or Guided Imagery, …

Exchange Rate And Interest Rate Exposure Of Uk Non-Financial Firms And Industries, Moji Olugbode Jan 2010

Exchange Rate And Interest Rate Exposure Of Uk Non-Financial Firms And Industries, Moji Olugbode

Plymouth Business School Theses

Exchange rate and interest rate risk have been documented as the most managed financial risks by most UK non-financial firms and industries. This is probably because of the severe adverse effects that contrary movements in these financial risks can have on the value of the firm or industry. Nevertheless, empirical studies on these risks have been very few and predominantly limited in scope. Therefore, using a sample of 402 UK non-financial firms from 31 industries, over the period January 1990 to December 2006, this study examines the relevance of these financial risks on the stock returns of firms and industries. …

Multidisciplined Individuals: Defining The Genre, Jacqueline Rhoda Rogers Jan 2010

Multidisciplined Individuals: Defining The Genre, Jacqueline Rhoda Rogers

Plymouth Business School Theses

Much of literature is predicated upon the assumption that learning occurring inside the workplace is related to developing expertise associated with the tasks for which the individual is employed and has a background in. This research investigates those individuals who acquire expertise in other disciplines and how the application of that additional expertise changes and enhances the individual and the organisation. By combining perspectives across the disciplinary boundaries and developing multidisciplinary expertise, these individuals demonstrate better methods of achieving business objectives, leading to faster, more imaginative solutions, more frequently, and with significantly less effort. The literature review commenced with defining …

From Placebo To Self-Help: Investigating Retention, Outcome And Mechanisms In Self-Directed Gratitude Interventions, Adam William Alfred Geraghty Jan 2010

From Placebo To Self-Help: Investigating Retention, Outcome And Mechanisms In Self-Directed Gratitude Interventions, Adam William Alfred Geraghty

School of Psychology Theses

The research presented in this thesis explored unguided self-help therapy, primarily using a gratitude technique. Psychological mechanisms that underlie the placebo response may also play a primary role in beneficial response to unguided selfhelp therapy. Retention (whether participants completed the intervention), outcome (whether the technique effectively reduced symptoms), and mechanisms (the psychological processes which antecede outcome and retention), were investigated with participants engaging in procedures to improve a diverse range of symptoms, namely, mood, sleep disturbance, body dissatisfaction, depression and anxiety. Studies one and two investigated the role of two placebo mechanisms, response expectancy and motivational concordance, as predictors of …

A Sustainable Campus? Students’ Perspectives Of Informal Learning About Sustainability, Debby Cotton, Alan Dyer, Jennie Winter Jan 2010

A Sustainable Campus? Students’ Perspectives Of Informal Learning About Sustainability, Debby Cotton, Alan Dyer, Jennie Winter

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Sustainability is an important issue in Higher Education and is increasingly embedded within the formal curriculum alongside the greening of university campuses and estates. The University of Plymouth has a strong reputation for sustainability, currently holding the top position in the People and Planet Green League. The university aims to embed sustainability throughout the university curriculum, community, culture and campus (University of Plymouth 2006). However, to date there has been little research which explores the student perspective of campus sustainability. Understanding the student perspective is necessary if educators are to establish if and how campus-based learning about sustainability takes place. …

Effects Of Hif-1 And Hif2 On Growth And Metabolism Of Clear-Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma 786-0 Xenografts, S Biswas, H Troy, R Leek, Y-L Chung, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

In cultured clear-cell renal carcinoma (CCRCC) 786-0 cells transfected with HIF1α (HIF-1+), HIF-2α (HIF-2+), or empty vector (EV), no significant differences were observed in the growth rates in vitro, but when grown in vivo as xenografts HIF-2α significantly increased, and HIF-1α significantly decreased growth rates, compared to EV tumors. Factors associated with proliferation were increased and factors associated with cell death were decreased in HIF-2+ tumors. Metabolite profiles showed higher glucose and lower lactate and alanine levels in the HIF-2+ tumors whilst immunostaining demonstrated higher pyruvate dehydrogenase and lower pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 1, compared to control tumors. Taken together, these …

Andrejsala Is Not An Island - Joined-Up Approaches To The Layered City, R Brown Jan 2010

Andrejsala Is Not An Island - Joined-Up Approaches To The Layered City, R Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Andrejsala is, of course, not an island; true, this port and industrial area of Riga, and most recently the locus of a massive mixed-use regeneration proposal of housing, offices, retail, leisure and cultural facilities, was once the site of a shifting sandbar in the Daugava River. Since at least the late 1800s it has however been connected to the mainland, forming part of the river‟s eastern bank. In many other respects however Andrejsala is an island. Economically, it is one of a number of industrialised spaces which have historically fragmented the city‟s physical fabric. Simultaneously, projected on to it have …

Novel Variation Associated With Species Range Expansion, James Buckley, Jon R. Bridle, Andrew Pomiankowski Jan 2010

Novel Variation Associated With Species Range Expansion, James Buckley, Jon R. Bridle, Andrew Pomiankowski

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Abstract When species shift their ranges to track climate change, they are almost certain to experience novel environments to which they are poorly adapted. Otaki and co-workers document an explosion of wing pattern variation accompanying range expansion in the pale grass blue butterfly. This pattern can be replicated in the laboratory using artificial selection on cold shocked pupae, at temperature extremes typical of recently colonized environments. We discuss how this phenotypic plasticity may be associated with successful colonization and how significant local adaptation is likely to re-establish developmental control. Integrating knowledge of trait plasticity into current genetic models of adaptation …

'Square Peg- Round Hole': The Emerging Professional Identities Of He In Fe Lecturersworking In A Partner College Network In South-West England, Rebecca Turner, Liz Mckenzie, Mark Stone

Plymouth Institute of Education

The professional status of further education lecturers has been widely debated and contested within the published literature. This article presents the results of a series of semi-structured interviews undertaken with a small sample of college lecturers working within a partner college network in south-west England. Regardless of the level of the higher/further education teaching the lecturers identities remain strongly rooted in their role as teachers and commitment to supporting learners attain their educational ambitions. The lecturers’ identities were in a state of flux due to the dual demands of their employer (the college) and collaborating institution (the university). Their shifting …
