The focus of this review paper is on peatland restoration, in particular what are the policies, present drivers and examples of best practice within the UK. The aim is to review opportunitiesand constraints to peatland restoration and make recommendations which could be used toinform future policy.Peatlands are wetlands in which restoration typically has three main aims. Firstly, to managevegetation more effectively to restore sites and their conservation features to favourablecondition; secondly, where feasible, to restore peat formation; and finally appropriatemanagement of water (chiefly peat wetness, but also water quality, runoff volume and timing)Vegetation management occurs on a continuum from the vegetation …

Negative Intrusive Thoughts And Dissociation As Risk Factors For Self-Harm., Helen Batey, Jon May, Jackie Andrade Jan 2010

Negative Intrusive Thoughts And Dissociation As Risk Factors For Self-Harm., Helen Batey, Jon May, Jackie Andrade

School of Psychology

Relationships between self-harm and vulnerability factors were studied in a general population of 432 participants, of whom 30% reported some experience of self-harm. This group scored higher on dissociation and childhood trauma, had lower self-worth, and reported more negative intrusive thoughts. Among the non-harming group, 10% scored similarly to the self-harmers on the dissociation and self-worth scales, and engaged in potentially maladaptive behaviors that are not defined as indicating clinical self-harm, but experienced fewer negative intrusive thoughts. This group may be at risk of future self-harm if they begin to experience negative intrusive thoughts. If negative intrusive thoughts are playing …

Cultural Responses To Volcanic Hazards On Mt Merapi, Indonesia, Katherine Helen Mary Donovan Jan 2010

Cultural Responses To Volcanic Hazards On Mt Merapi, Indonesia, Katherine Helen Mary Donovan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Over the last decade an interdisciplinary science has evolved in order to reduce the impact of natural hazards by incorporating social sciences into physical hazard studies. This science has revealed that a community's ability to anticipate, cope with and recover from the impact of natural hazards relies upon that society's vulnerability. The concept of vulnerability has conventionally focussed on certain key social statistics such as wealth, age and gender, yet there is another element of vulnerability: the component of culture. In this study culture refers to the oral histories, taboos, ceremonies and legends that are created in order to explain, …

Cap And Trade': Reducing Carbon Emissions And The Climate Change Act 2008, Megan Phillips Jan 2010

Cap And Trade': Reducing Carbon Emissions And The Climate Change Act 2008, Megan Phillips

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The Climate Change Act 2008 came into force on the 26th November 2008 with the aim of establishing effective regulatory mechanisms to limit the UK's carbon emissions and to mitigate the effects of climate change. The Act effectively introduces two elements into the legal system for reducing the UK's net carbon emissions. First, the legislation enacts measures to mitigate the current damage made to the climate, by introducing carbon reduction commitments and setting targets for industry sectors. Second, it enables the Secretary of State to adapt policies according to the progress of the system, information for which will be provided …

Challenging Compulsory Admission To Hospital Under The Mental Health Act 1983, Harry Perrin Jan 2010

Challenging Compulsory Admission To Hospital Under The Mental Health Act 1983, Harry Perrin

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The Mental Health Act 1983 provides for compulsory admission to hospital, under criteria designed to ensure individuals are not detained wrongly. This article examines the primary legal means by which compulsory admission can be challenged. Habeas corpus and judicial review offer means of examining the legality of a decision, based on the decision-making procedure. The efficacy of these mechanisms in mental health cases has come under scrutiny from the European Court of Human Rights. The Mental Health Review Tribunal conversely is equipped to examine legality based on the merits of the decision. The potential for conflict here, however, lies in …

The Concept Of Consent Under The Sexual Offences Act 2003, Jacqueline Scott Jan 2010

The Concept Of Consent Under The Sexual Offences Act 2003, Jacqueline Scott

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The concept of consent is fundamental in considering the crime of rape under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 (SOA). Consent was placed on a statutory footing for the first time by the SOA which defines consent alongside evidential and conclusive presumptions under sections 74-76, respectively. This article explores the position that unfortunately, neither significant clarity nor enhanced protection appears to have been embraced or achieved by the incorporation of consent.

Gender Based Crimes At The International Court, Sophie O'Connell Jan 2010

Gender Based Crimes At The International Court, Sophie O'Connell

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The International Criminal Court (ICC) was established in 2002 and its Statute (Rome Statute1 ) was heralded as an advanced enumeration of gender based crimes. However, in the three cases before the Court in which charges have been confirmed: The Prosecutor v Thomas Lubanga Dyilo2 (Lubanga), The Prosecutor v Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chii 3 (Katanga and Ngudjolo) and The Prosecutor v Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo4 (Bemba) there are either no charges for gender based crimes as in Lubanga5 or the charges are not comprehensive. This article examines why despite the extensive provision in the Rome Statute the ICC is …

Surface Adsorption And Pore-Level Properties Of Mineral And Related Systems Of Relevance To The Recycling Of Paper, Christopher Mark Gribble Jan 2010

Surface Adsorption And Pore-Level Properties Of Mineral And Related Systems Of Relevance To The Recycling Of Paper, Christopher Mark Gribble

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

There is a significant problem for the paper recycling industry known as “stickies”. “Stickies” are tacky species, present in recycled paper and coated broke, derived from coating formulations, adhesives, etc. They impact negatively on paper quality and cause web runnability problems by deposit build-up. To sustain recycling, stickies are controlled by adsorbing them onto minerals added to the recycled stock. So the aim of the project was to characterise non-porous and porous minerals suitable for paper-making, and then use the knowledge gained to improve the adsorption of stickies. The pore level properties of the minerals used to control stickies are …

Numerical Models For Natural Fibre Composites With Stochastic Properties, Amandeep Singh Virk Jan 2010

Numerical Models For Natural Fibre Composites With Stochastic Properties, Amandeep Singh Virk

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Natural fibres are increasingly being considered as the reinforcement for polymer matrix composites as they are perceived to be sustainable being a renewable resource. However, they suffer from higher variability in mechanical properties and concerns about their long-term durability in a moist environment. In this study the physical properties of the jute fibres were characterised, the fibre length distribution was determined and the fibre cross-section was analysed using digital images. It was observed that the true fibre area followed a log-normal distribution. The fibre area distribution for different geometrical shapes was estimated and the error in the estimated area of …

The Development Of Reasoning Heuristics In Autism And In Typical Development, Kinga Ella Morsanyi Jan 2010

The Development Of Reasoning Heuristics In Autism And In Typical Development, Kinga Ella Morsanyi

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Reasoning and judgment under uncertainty are often based on a limited number of simplifying heuristics rather than formal logic or rule-based argumentation. Heuristics are low-effort mental shortcuts, which save time and effort, and usually result in accurate judgment, but they can also lead to systematic errors and biases when applied inappropriately. In the past 40 years hundreds of papers have been published on the topic of heuristics and biases in judgment and decision making. However, we still know surprisingly little about the development and the cognitive underpinnings of heuristics and biases. The main aim of my thesis is to examine …

Perception Of Accents And Dialects In Adults And Infants, Joseph Patrick Butler Jan 2010

Perception Of Accents And Dialects In Adults And Infants, Joseph Patrick Butler

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis has been undertaken with the purpose of investigating how adult speech processing systems are affected by. and how they cope with, the presence of different regional and foreign accents in speech, and to investigate the developmental origins of adult accent perception capabilities. Experiments 1 to 4 were designed to investigate the long term effects of exposure to different accents, and whether short term adaptation to an accent was possible, using a lexical decision task. The results demonstrated an effect of accent familiarity but no short term adaptation was evident. Experiments 5 to 7 investigated the short term effects …

A Narrative In Relief: The Historiography Of English Modern Painting (1910-1915), From The 1910s To The 1950s, Carol Frances Brand

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The groups of painters in England who experimented with new visual expressions of modernity between 1910 and 1915 are the subject of this historiographical research. More precisely, the accounts of Vorticism, Bloomsbury post-Impressionism and the modern art of painters associated with Sickert, (principally the Camden Town Group), have been critically examined over a forty year period in order to trace the narrative of their place in contemporary art criticism and their entry into histories of what soon became the recent past. This textually-based methodology has produced an insight into the forces acting upon the critical reception of a particular period …

Visualising 'The Waste Land': Discovering A Praxis Of Adaptation, Sally Waterman Jan 2010

Visualising 'The Waste Land': Discovering A Praxis Of Adaptation, Sally Waterman

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research examines the issues and visual processes that arise in the production of self-representations derived from literary texts. The construction of a series of photographic and video installations drawing upon T. S Eliot’s poem 'The Waste Land' (1922) allowed for the exploration and analysis of how literature functions as a device to represent autobiographical experience within my media arts practice. The study considered the relevance and usage of the literary source in relation to specific adaptation procedures, in terms of what complexities were encountered and how these were understood. Whilst orthodox film adaptation provided a theoretical framework for initial …

Amergent Music: Behavior And Becoming In Technoetic & Media Arts, Norbert F. Herber Jan 2010

Amergent Music: Behavior And Becoming In Technoetic & Media Arts, Norbert F. Herber

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Technoetic and media arts are environments of mediated interaction and emergence, where meaning is negotiated by individuals through a personal examination and experience—or becoming—within the mediated space. This thesis examines these environments from a musical perspective and considers how sound functions as an analog to this becoming. Five distinct, original musical works explore the possibilities as to how the emergent dynamics of mediated, interactive exchange can be leveraged towards the construction of musical sound. In the context of this research, becoming can be understood relative to Henri Bergson’s description of the appearance of reality—something that is making or unmaking but …

Application Of Fractional Calculus To Rainfall-Streamflow Modelling, Martin Borthwick Jan 2010

Application Of Fractional Calculus To Rainfall-Streamflow Modelling, Martin Borthwick

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

There is evidence that hydrologic systems exhibit memory processes that may be represented by fractional order systems. A new theory is developed in this work that generalises the classical unit hydrograph technique for the rainfall-runoff transformation. The theory is based upon a fractional order linear deterministic systems approach subject to an initial condition and is taken to apply to the entire rainfallstreamflow transformation (i.e. including baseflow). The general equation for a cascade of time-lagged linear reservoirs of fractional order subject to a constant initialisation function is derived, and is shown to be a form of fractional relaxation model. Dooge's (1959) …

Twig Dances: Improvisation Performance As Ecological Practice, Malaika Sarco-Thomas Jan 2010

Twig Dances: Improvisation Performance As Ecological Practice, Malaika Sarco-Thomas

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

ecology by analyzing data collected from a series of experiments in improvisation. Conducted in a number of locations in Europe and Asia, these experiments examine the usefulness of improvisation performance practices to notions of “ecology” and common understandings of humans’ relationships to our environment. Using “ecology” to describe an investigation of interrelationship as well as a commitment to act with an awareness of one’s actions in the social, mental and natural spheres discussed by Felix Guattari (2000), I outline ways contemporary improvisation practices can facilitate this investigation. To do this I draw on my own experience as a dancer at …

An Exploration Into How Students With Dyslexia Identify With Their Condition, With Particular Reference To The Tensions Which Surround Public And Private Perceptions Of Dyslexia, Deborah A Shenton Jan 2010

An Exploration Into How Students With Dyslexia Identify With Their Condition, With Particular Reference To The Tensions Which Surround Public And Private Perceptions Of Dyslexia, Deborah A Shenton

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis, discusses the implications of the social and private constructions of dyslexia for the individual with dyslexia and the dyslexic identity. In view of the difficulties inherent in higher education this study interviews people with dyslexia who successfully entered degree courses at university. It explores their experiences in an effort to gain an understanding of how people with dyslexia form an identity. Issues surrounding 'dyslexia' have increasingly focused on its credibility as a 'genuine' medical and disabling condition. The social expectations of the condition and the differing social and medical models of conditions warranting the label 'disability' have complicated …

The Habitual Eccentricities Of The Solons Of Staffordshire: An Investigation Of The Circumstances Surrounding The Parliamentary Enquiry Into The Ill-Treatment Of Mrs Eliza Price Of Brierley Hill, 1845, David Cox

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This article investigates the circumstances surrounding a dramatic petition read out in the House of Commons in the late spring of 1845 which detailed the alleged ill-treatment of a heavily pregnant young married woman from Brierley Hill, Staffordshire by two parish constables acting upon the instructions of a county magistrate. What began as a minor squabble in two competing provincial magistrates' courts in the rapidly urbanizing Black Country resulted in a Parliamentary Enquiry and quickly escalated into a nationally aired debate on the capability and legality of the methods used by both the provincial magistracy and police to arrest, detain …

R V Southampton And Fatal Medical Negligence: An Anomaly Or A Sign Of Things To Come?, Gavin Ruddy Jan 2010

R V Southampton And Fatal Medical Negligence: An Anomaly Or A Sign Of Things To Come?, Gavin Ruddy

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

A review of statistics concerning fatal medical negligence in the NHS shows that, despite fears of a 'compensation culture' and the right to life protected by Human Rights legislation, only about one in every 1,000 such cases is investigated by the courts. This appears to be largely due to very poor reporting of adverse incidents by health authorities. However, as a result of recent healthcare scandals, the reporting of incidents is expected to significantly increase in the near future. The case of R v Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust 2006 illustrates the striking effect that enhanced levels of scrutiny can …

Purdy: The First Step On The Road Towards Assisted Suicide, Laura Sayer Jan 2010

Purdy: The First Step On The Road Towards Assisted Suicide, Laura Sayer

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This article considers how likely it is that English law will be amended in the near future to provide legal recognition and acceptance of assisted suicide in light of the 2009 House of Lords decision in Purdy. The extent to which Purdy has acted as a catalyst to generate formal legislative amendment is explored in the light of recent attempts to achieve a change in the law. Within this context the underlying and conflicting arguments of those in support and against the legalisation of assisted suicide are examined.
