The Roles Of Organic And Inorganic Zinc And Selenium Sources In The Nutrition And Promotion Of Health In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Sebastien A. B. Rider
The Roles Of Organic And Inorganic Zinc And Selenium Sources In The Nutrition And Promotion Of Health In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Sebastien A. B. Rider
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Three nutritional feeding trials were undertaken to investigate the nutritional role of zinc (Zn) ands elenium (Se) in the promotion of health in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum). Organic and inorganic sources of both elements were assessed by determining bioavailability, effects on growth, feed utilisation, immuno-competence, oxidative status, fillet quality and interactions with other trace elements. A focus was made on the use of practical diets throughout the study. The first experiment assessed the bioavailability of residual Se and Zn from a white fishmeal based practical diet during a 10-week trial in comparison to diets containing either supplemental …
Estimating Population Change And Dispersal Activity Of Spiders In An Agricultural Landscape, Christopher Woolley
Estimating Population Change And Dispersal Activity Of Spiders In An Agricultural Landscape, Christopher Woolley
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
The principal aims of this work were to investigate dispersal activity of spiders commonly found in agricultural crops, and to study the influence of both crop type and farm operations on spider assemblages and populations. Work was also conducted to develop and test an improved trapping method for samplmg aerially dispersing (ballooning) spiders. Objectives were to determine whether common farmland species exhibited species-specific differences in dispersal activity. Behavioural data from wind chamber studies were also related to field data to establish i f seasonality in dispersal was related to seasonal changes in dispersal motivation or variation in ground population densities. …

Evaluation Of Selected Probiotics And Bovine Lactoferrin As Feed Supplements For Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss Walbaum) For Applications In Aquaculture, Daniel Merrifield
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
A series of investigations were carried out to assessth e intestinal microbiota of rainbow trout and the potential applications of probiotics and bovine lactoferrin (M). Farm and aquarium reared rainbow trout were examined with specific emphasis on the autochthonous microbial communities. Culture-based, culture-independent and electron microscopical investigations revealed mixed, complex microbial communities in all intestinal regions. DGGE based analysis revealed unique species present either only as allochthonous populations or autochthonous populations. 16S rRNA sequence analysis allowed species level identification of a range of isolates, many of which have not been identified from the rainbow trout digestive tract previously. Two ftirther …
Physiological And Biochemical Responses To Cadmium Exposure In Fucus Serratus (Phaeophyceae), Soon Jeong Lee
Physiological And Biochemical Responses To Cadmium Exposure In Fucus Serratus (Phaeophyceae), Soon Jeong Lee
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Marine macroalgae can accumulate metals from the surrounding waters. But their responses to metals, especially non-essential metals like cadmium, are not well known and require further investigation. Therefore, the effects of cadmium exposure on the physiology and biochemistry of Fucus serratus collected from metal-contaminated (Restronguet Point) and clean (Bantham Quay) habitats were investigated. Although exposed to high concentrations of metal pollution throughout their life cycle, F. serratus from Restronguet Point accumulated similar concentrations of total and non-exchangeable cadmium to those of the reference population from Bantham Quay. Total and non-exchangeable contents of cadmium increased with increasing cadmium concentrations and time …
Biomechanical Modelling Of Musical Performance: A Case Study Of The Guitar, Leandro Costalonga
Biomechanical Modelling Of Musical Performance: A Case Study Of The Guitar, Leandro Costalonga
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Computer-generated musical performances are often criticised for being unable to match the expressivity found in performances by humans. Much research has been conducted in the past two decades in order to create computer technology able to perform a given piece music as expressively as humans, largely without success. Two approaches have been often adopted to research into modelling expressive music performance on computers. The first focuses on sound; that is, on modelling patterns of deviations between a recorded human performance and the music score. The second focuses on modelling the cognitive processes involved in a musical performance. Both approaches are …

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses
The overalla im of thist hesisi s to developa ndc riticallyr eflectu ponl earningp rinciples that are fit for purpose in engaging learners within situations of actual and anticipated humanitarian crisis. The study begins with an examination of the broad backcioth to the study, the interlinked causes of humanitarian emergencies - globalization, climate change and underlying worldviews. It is based on the assumption that interconnected social and environmental problems, as currently manifested, will be further exacerbated by the consequences of incremental and especially runaway climate change, or'creeping emergencies. ' The study draws upon expertise and insights from two contemporary educational …
Environmental Regulation: Effective Or Defective? Assessing Whether Criminal Sanctions Provide Adequate Protection Of The Environment, Emma Bethell
The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review
Issues, such as climate change and global warming, have seen environmental protection grow in the global consciousness into something worthy and in need of regulation. In response, a number of laws have been enacted which make certain environmental actions criminal offences, enforced through the criminal justice system. These environmental crimes are enforced using the same mechanisms and must satisfy the same procedural safeguards as 'traditional' criminal offences in order to secure conviction. This discussion looks at elements of the current system and whether it provides an effective system for protecting the environment. An examination of the alternatives is also made …
Saviour Siblings And The Human Fertilisation And Embryology Acts 1990 And 2008, Rebecca Thorp
Saviour Siblings And The Human Fertilisation And Embryology Acts 1990 And 2008, Rebecca Thorp
The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review
In 2003, the case of R (on the Application of Quintavalle) v Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority1 dramatically brought into light the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 as outdated and inconsistent. Authorisations for saviour sibling treatment appeared futile as cases were decided illogically, leaving some patients having to seek treatment elsewhere. The procedure of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis alongside tissue typing embryos has been a huge breakthrough in treating children born with serious life threatening diseases. However, this essentially unforeseen technology is poorly regulated in the 1990 Act and has therefore resulted in the new Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act …
The Manufacture And Testing Of Perforated Composite Acoustic Panels, Robert Blackburn
The Manufacture And Testing Of Perforated Composite Acoustic Panels, Robert Blackburn
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The recent expansion of civil aviation has been accompanied by significant growth in the use of advanced composite structures with carbon fibre reinforced epoxy often the material of choice in many structures. Composite structures have a long history in engine nacelles, where an optimised design can both fulfil structural requirements and simultaneously provide an acoustic liner for sound attenuation. The "traditional process" involves the drilling of high-density multiple holes with the twin consequences of extended production times and machining waste. Elimination of this perforation process is an attractive target in a commercial environment. Structural performance could be improved by retaining …

Benthic Foraminifera Assemblages In The Central Barents Sea: An Evaluation Of Combining Live And Total Fauna Studies In Tracking Environmental Change, Mh Saher, Dk Kristensen, M Hald, S Korsun, Ll Jørgensen
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
We present living (stained) benthic foraminifera assemblage data in nine surface sediment samples from the central Barents Sea collected in 2005 and 2006. The abundances of 20 selected species are compared to these from previously published total fauna assemblages of nearby samples. Between 1 and 3 total fauna samples from various years (between 1971 and 1992) are compared with the modern (2005 and ’06) samples. The main purpose of the paper is to evaluate the applicability of this comparison. We conclude that, with proper caution, comparing live and total fauna can yield valuable results. Eliminating fragile species, and clustering species …

Objectively Measured Physical Activity And Its Association With Adiponectin And Other Novel Metabolic Markers: A Longitudinal Study In Children (Earlybird 38)., Bs Metcalf, An Jeffery, J Hosking, Ld Voss, N Sattar, Tj Wilkin
Peninsula Medical School
OBJECTIVE: Recent evidence suggests that, in children, traditional markers of metabolic disturbance are related only weakly to physical activity. We therefore sought to establish the corresponding relationships with newer metabolic markers. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a nonintervention longitudinal study of 213 healthy children recruited from 54 schools in Plymouth, U.K. MTI accelerometers were used to make objective 7-day recordings of physical activity at ages 5 +/- 0.3 (mean +/- SD), 6, 7, and 8 years. Overall physical activity was taken as the average of the four annual time points. The metabolic markers at 8 years were adiponectin, leptin, …

Physiology And Ecology Of Three Amphipod Species In Uk Estuaries, Colette Suzanne Mesher
Physiology And Ecology Of Three Amphipod Species In Uk Estuaries, Colette Suzanne Mesher
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The physiology and ecology of three amphipod species, Corophium volutator, Gammarus marinus and G. chevreuxi were examined. The physiology of the amphipods were investigated in two ways. The physiological capacity was measured as the rate of oxygen consumption (MO2 - µ) of oxygen per mg of wet mass per hour), over two time durations, 4 hours (short term) and 5 days (medium term) in a variety of salinities with individuals of all size classes. Overall, larger individuals of all species exhibited lower MO2 by mass. More specifically, C. volutator and G. chevreuxi exhibited lowest rates of respiration at salinities between …

Crosstalk Of Vegf And Notch Pathways In Tumour Angiogenesis: Therapeutic Implications, J-L Li, Al Harris
Crosstalk Of Vegf And Notch Pathways In Tumour Angiogenesis: Therapeutic Implications, J-L Li, Al Harris
School of Biomedical Sciences
Angiogenesis is regulated by a number of angiogenic factors through many signalling pathways. The VEGF pathway and Notch signalling are perhaps two of the most important mechanisms in regulation of embryonic vascular development and tumour angiogenesis. Blockade of the VEGF pathway effectively inhibits tumour angiogenesis and growth in preclinical models. The successes in phase III trials have added anti-VEGF agents to standard cancer therapy in several major cancers. A recent flurry of findings indicate that DLL4/Notch signalling decreases angiogenesis by suppressing endothelial tip cell formation; importantly, blockade of DLL4/Notch signalling strikingly increases non-productive angiogenesis but significantly reduces the growth of …

Three-Dimensional Evolution Of Large-Amplitude Internal Waves In The Strait Of Gibraltar, Vasiliy Vlasenko, Jose C. Sanchez Garrido, Nataliya Stashchuk, Jesus Garcia Lafuente, Miguel Losada
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The modeling of large-amplitude internal waves (LAIWs) propagating in the Strait of Gibraltar is carried out using a fully nonlinear nonhydrostatic numerical model. The focus of the modeling efforts was on three-dimensional peculiarities of LAIW evolution, namely, cross-strait variability, interaction with lateral boundaries (including wave breaking and water mixing), radiation of secondary waves from orographic features, and interaction of secondary scattered internal waves. The along-channel propagation of packets of LAIWs reveals remarkable three-dimensional behavior. Due to the Coriolis force and multiple reflections from the lateral boundaries, the largest leading LAIW loses its energy much faster than that in the packet …

The rapid onset of massive, systemic viral replication during primary HIV or simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection and the immune evasion capabilities of these viruses pose fundamental problems for vaccines that depend upon initial viral replication to stimulate effector T cell expansion and differentiation. We hypothesized that vaccines designed to maintain differentiated effector memory T cell (TEM cell) responses at viral entry sites might improve efficacy by impairing viral replication at its earliest stage, and we have therefore developed SIV protein-encoding vectors based on rhesus cytomegalovirus (RhCMV), the prototypical inducer of life-long TEM cell responses. RhCMV vectors expressing SIV Gag, …

Development Of Cognitive Capabilities In Humanoid Robots, Vadim Tikhanoff
Development Of Cognitive Capabilities In Humanoid Robots, Vadim Tikhanoff
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Building intelligent systems with human level of competence is the ultimate grand challenge for science and technology in general, and especially for the computational intelligence community. Recent theories in autonomous cognitive systems have focused on the close integration (grounding) of communication with perception, categorisation and action. Cognitive systems are essential for integrated multi-platform systems that are capable of sensing and communicating. This thesis presents a cognitive system for a humanoid robot that integrates abilities such as object detection and recognition, which are merged with natural language understanding and refined motor controls. The work includes three studies; (1) the use of …
Experiencing Interaction Design: A Pragmatic Theory, Ronald Lengkong Wakkary
Experiencing Interaction Design: A Pragmatic Theory, Ronald Lengkong Wakkary
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis contributes a theory for the field of interaction design based on philosophical pragmatism. The theory frames interaction design as a pragmatic experience shaped by the inquiries of designers. The contributions of the theory are that it positions the designer at the centre of a theory, describes interaction design practice to be more than a collection of methods and strategies, and provides a sound basis for generating and verifying new knowledge through design. The thesis describes and analyzes two interaction design research projects through self-reflexive accounts that illustrate the proposed theory. The projects are a tangible museum guide and …
