Making Sense Of Words: A Robotic Model For Language Abstraction, F Stramandinoli, D Marocco, A Cangelosi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Building robots capable of acting independently in unstructured environments is still a challenging task for roboticists. The capability to comprehend and produce language in a ‘human-like’ manner represents a powerful tool for the autonomous interaction of robots with human beings, for better understanding situations and exchanging information during the execution of tasks that require cooperation. In this work, we present a robotic model for grounding abstract action words (i.e. USE, MAKE) through the hierarchical organization of terms directly linked to perceptual and motor skills of a humanoid robot. Experimental results have shown that the robot, in response to linguistic commands, …

Loss of the Merlin tumor suppressor and activation of the Hippo signaling pathway play major roles in the control of cellproliferation and tumorigenesis. We have identified completely novel roles for Merlin and the Hippo pathway effectorYes-associated protein (YAP) in the control of Schwann cell (SC) plasticity and peripheral nerve repair after injury. Injuryto the peripheral nervous system (PNS) causes a dramatic shift in SC molecular phenotype and the generation of repaircompetent SCs, which direct functional repair. We find that loss of Merlin in these cells causes a catastrophic failure ofaxonal regeneration and remyelination in the PNS. This effect is mediated …

Interactive Musical Biocomputer: An Unconventional Approach To Research In Unconventional Computing, Er Miranda, Ew Braund
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Computer music is a truly interdisciplinary field; practitioners are well known for experimenting with new and developing technologies from a wide span of disciplines. Such experimentation is a tradition that stems back to the genesis of computer music, where a mathematician with a musical background programmed an early computer in the early 1950s to play a tune. The area of computer music has since evolved in tandem with advances made in computing technology. We are interested in studying how new unconventional models of computation may provide new pathways for music and related technologies. Unconventional computing develops new algorithms and computing …

Thiobacillus thioparus DSM 505T is one of first two isolated strains of inorganic sulfur-oxidising Bacteria. The original strain of T. thioparus was lost almost 100 years ago and the working type strain is Culture CT (=DSM 505T = ATCC 8158T) isolated by Starkey in 1934 from agricultural soil at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. It is an obligate chemolithoautotroph that conserves energy from the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds using the Kelly-Trudinger pathway and uses it to fix carbon dioxide It is not capable of heterotrophic or mixotrophic growth. The strain has a genome …

Learning Robot Control Using A Hierarchical Som-Based Encoding, Ts Dahl, G Pierris
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Hierarchical representations and modeling of sensorimotor observations is a fundamental approach for the development of scalable robot control strategies. Previously, we introduced the novel Hierarchical Self-Organizing Map-based Encoding algorithm (HSOME) that is based on a computational model of infant cognition. Each layer is a temporally augmented SOM and every node updates a decaying activation value. The bottom level encodes sensori-motor instances while their temporal associations are hierarchically built on the layers above. In the past, HSOME has shown to support hierarchical encoding of sequential sensor-actuator observations both in abstract domains and real humanoid robots. Two novel features are presented here …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
One of the best-supported patterns in life history evolution is that organisms cope with environmental fluctuations by buffering their most important vital rates against them. This demographic buffering hypothesis is evidenced by a tendency for temporal variation in rates of survival and reproduction to correlate negatively with their contribution to fitness. Here, we show that widespread evidence for demographic buffering can be artefactual, resulting from natural relationships between the mean and variance of vital rates. Following statistical scaling, we find no significant tendency for plant life histories to be buffered demographically. Instead, some species are buffered, whereas others have labile …

Evidence For Genetic Heterogeneity Between Clinical Subtypes Of Bipolar Disorder, Aw Charney, Dm Ruderfer, Ea Stahl, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
We performed a genome-wide association study of 6447 bipolar disorder (BD) cases and 12 639 controls from the International Cohort Collection for Bipolar Disorder (ICCBD). Meta-analysis was performed with prior results from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium Bipolar Disorder Working Group for a combined sample of 13 902 cases and 19 279 controls. We identified eight genome-wide significant, associated regions, including a novel associated region on chromosome 10 (rs10884920; P=3.28 × 10−8) that includes the brain-enriched cytoskeleton protein adducin 3 (ADD3), a non-coding RNA, and a neuropeptide-specific aminopeptidase P (XPNPEP1). Our large sample size allowed us to test the heritability and …

Real-Time Kinetic Binding Studies At Attomolar Concentrations In Solution Phase Using A Single-Stage Opto-Biosensing Platform Based Upon Infrared Surface Plasmons, T Allsop, C Mou, R Neal, S Mariani, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Here we present a new generic opto-bio-sensing platform combining immobilised aptamers on an infrared plasmonic sensing device generated by nano-structured thin film that demonstrates amongst the highest index spectral sensitivities of any optical fibre sensor yielding on average 3.4 × 104 nm/RIU in the aqueous index regime (with a figure of merit of 330) This offers a single stage, solution phase, atto-molar detection capability, whilst delivering real-time data for kinetic studies in water-based chemistry. The sensing platform is based upon optical fibre and has the potential to be multiplexed and used in remote sensing applications. As an example of the …

Microplastics Affect The Ecological Functioning Of An Important Biogenic Habitat., Ds Green, B Boots, Ne O'Connor, R Thompson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Biological effects of microplastics on the health of bivalves have been demonstrated elsewhere, but ecological impacts on the biodiversity and ecosystem functioning of bivalve-dominated habitats are unknown. Thus, we exposed intact sediment cores containing European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) or blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) in seawater to two different densities (2.5 or 25 μg L(-1)) of biodegradable or conventional microplastics in outdoor mesocosms. We hypothesized that filtration rates of the bivalves, inorganic nitrogen cycling, primary productivity of sediment dwelling microphytobenthos, and the structure of invertebrate benthic assemblages would be influenced by microplastics. After 50 days, filtration by M. edulis was …

A Reference Computational Model To Manage The Semantics Of Learning Environments Using Swrl Enabled Owl Ontologies, Eiman Almami
A Reference Computational Model To Manage The Semantics Of Learning Environments Using Swrl Enabled Owl Ontologies, Eiman Almami
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis proposes a reference model and its computational core to support the creation of software applications within educational environments, which address Differences In Learning (DiffInL) and are applicable to both learners and instructors. This work differs from others in that the strength of this model resides on the re-usable character of the reasoning mechanism enabled by the computational environment. The starting point is the definition of agreed learning goals that the learner needs to achieve. In turn, the reference model generates personalised, best-practice teaching and learning materials, suitable for achieving the individual’s learning goals. This reference model consists of …
