Community Mothers Or Impromptu Actresses? The Multifaceted Experience Of Women In The New York Police Department (1900-1941), Yann Philippe
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
In the first half of the twentieth century, women police played a small yet active role in the New York Police Department. This article does not intend to narrate the growing presence of policewomen in the department but to examine their professional roles, identities, activities and experiences. It emphasizes the diversity of their tasks and social background, taking especially into account the division between former police matrons and social workers. Given this diversity, the category of gender is thus reinterpreted to understand how it functioned as a flexible and complex identity in relation to other forms of identity. Gender could …

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This thesis contributes to research regarding social perceptions and legal responses to child criminality. It challenges existing preconceptions regarding the predictability of moral panic in such cases and the social perceptions of, and legal responses to, acts of child on child killing. It also challenges the efficacy of the moral panic model in successfully explicating the rise of moral panic. An in-depth study of two case examples, the Bulger case 1993 and the Burgess case 1861 is undertaken through the theoretical framework of the moral panic model. In order to establish conceptualisations of children at the time they are subsumed …

Biodiversity and conservation data are generally costly to collect, particularly in the marine realm. Hence, data collected for a given—often scientific—purpose are occasionally contributed toward secondary needs, such as policy implementation or other types of decision-making. However, while the quality and accessibility of marine biodiversity and conservation data have improved over the past decade, the ways in which these data can be used to develop and implement relevant management and conservation measures and actions are not always explicit. For this reason, there are a number of scientifically-sound datasets that are not used systematically to inform policy and decisions. Transforming these …

Optical instruments have proved invaluable in the study of suspended matter in the sea but the measurements they provide are more closely related to the cross-sectional area of the particles in suspension than the mass measured by filtration or predicted by theory. In this paper, we examine the factors controlling the relationship between particle area and mass, using the fractal model of particle structure as a theoretical framework. Both theory and observation agree that the area-to-mass ratio of particles (symbol A*) decreases with increasing fractal dimension (symbol Nf) as particles hide behind each other in compact flocs. The equation A* …

Within Medical Education students more readily engage with the ‘hard’ sciences seeing sociology, psychology and ethics as ‘nice’ rather than ‘need’ to know. Yet within the published literature, there has been little research into students’ experiences of these subjects. In this paper we discuss a research method that allows the application of threshold concept theory to the exploration of the process of ‘non-biomedical science learning in medical education’. 16 students from a UK medical school were asked to record on their smart phones, their experiences of ‘doctor facilitated’ small group sessions. The students uploaded their recordings to a secure drop …

Traditionally, social influence has been defined as the ‘process whereby attitudes and behaviour are influenced by the real or imagined presence of other people’ (Hogg and Vaughan, p. 236). Social psychologists have distinguished between three forms of social influence: compliance, conformity and obedience. In this chapter, we review some of the most influential studies in the field, before moving on to consider critical reactions to this area of research, and alternatives proposed by critical social psychologists. In particular, we will suggest that by looking at how people use language we can recast what we understand by social influence.

A passive sampler inspired from previous devices was developed for the integrative sampling of a broad range of contaminants in the water column. Our primary objective was to improve the performance of the device to provide accurate and averaged pollutant water concentrations. For this purpose, an agarose diffusive gel was used as the boundary layer that drives the analyte uptake rate. Contrary to conventional passive samplers, the developed device does not require the sampling rates to be corrected for exposure conditions (e.g. hydrodynamic flow) because the diffusive gel boundary layer selected was sufficiently large to control the pollutant diffusion rate …

Comments on an article by Jan De Houwer et al. (see record 2017-15804-001). In their target article, De Houwer et al. describe an archipelago of islands each colonized by a different tribe of psychologists, with little awareness of their neighbours. They focus particular attention on two tribes – the cognitivists and the functionalists – who appear to share many interests (they study the same topics, try to solve the same problems), but who have diverged in their scientific methods and theories. Worse, these two tribes communicate very little, and so do not learn from each other. The authors are troubled …

Aiding Soundtrack Composer Creativity Through Automated Film Script-Profiled Algorithmic Composition, A Kirke, E Miranda
School of Art, Design and Architecture
The creation of soundtracks for feature length films is a major undertaking. One method involves watching the film for sections that inspire some emotional response, and then improvising live. The composing of a score is often a combination of bottom up and top down processes. For example small segments of score are composed first, while in parallel a broader structure is planned based on the narrative. We present a system that attempts to aid the composer in this creative process. The system focuses on the script rather than moving image of the film. This has two advantages: (a) a composer …

Characterisation Of Microsatellites For Litoria Nannotis (Amphibia : Hylidae), An Endangered Waterfall Frog Endemic To The Australian Wet Tropics, R Puschendorf, Ev Todd, Mg Gardner
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Litoria nannotis is an endangered waterfall frog from the wet tropics region in north Queensland that has suffered significant population declines due to the emerging fungal disease known as chytridiomycosis. The species has two deeply divergent lineages, and we used 454 shotgun sequencing of DNA extracted from one individual of the northern lineage to identify and design PCR primers for 576 microsatellite loci. Thirty markers were tested for amplification success and variability in a population sample from each lineage. Of these, 17 were found to be polymorphic in the northern lineage and 10 loci were polymorphic in the southern lineage. …

Agricultural Productivity Growth And The Role Of Capital In South Asia (1980–2013), A Anik, S Rahman, J Sarker
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The study assessed agricultural sustainability in South Asia (i.e., Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Nepal) by computing multi-lateral multi-temporal Total Factor Productivity (TFP) indices and their six finer components (technical change, technical-, scale- and mix-efficiency changes, residual scale and residual mix-efficiency changes) and examined the role of capital in driving TFP growth covering a 34-year period (1980-2013). Results revealed that all countries sustained agricultural productivity growth at variable rates with Bangladesh experiencing highest rate estimated @1.05% p.a. followed by India (0.52%), Pakistan (0.38%) and Nepal (0.06% p.a.). There were little or no variation in technical and scale efficiency changes among the …

Near-Surface Distribution Of Pollutants In Coastal Waters As Assessed By Novel Polyethylene Passive Samplers, Yann Aminot, Angel Belles, Claire Alary, James W. Readman
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
We report a novel and inexpensive method to provide high resolution vertical measurements of temporally integrated organic contaminants in surface and sub-surface waters in polluted coastal environments. It employs a strip of polyethylene deployed as a passive sampler. Verifications are confirmed via conventional spot sample analyses and against Performance Reference Compound (PRC) calibration methods. Analytes targeted include 16 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, 15 personal care products, 8 organophosphorus flame retardants, 4 antifouling 'booster' biocides and 15 n-alkanes. Whilst all contaminants typically revealed homogeneous concentrations from 10 cm to 3 m depth in the selected harbour (<30% variations), many increased sharply at the air-sea interface. The passive sampler was shown to afford better resolution than could be achieved using conventional analytical techniques at the surface microlayer (SML). Whilst hydrophobicity appeared to be a key factor for the enrichment of many determinants, less correlation was found for the emerging contaminants.

A Global Map Of Saltmarshes, C Mcowen, L Weatherdon, J-W Bochove, E Sullivan, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Background Saltmarshes are extremely valuable but often overlooked ecosystems, contributing to livelihoods locally and globally through the associated ecosystem services they provide, including fish production, carbon storage and coastal protection. Despite their importance, knowledge of the current spatial distribution (occurrence and extent) of saltmarshes is incomplete. In light of increasing anthropogenic and environmental pressures on coastal ecosystems, global data on the occurrence and extent of saltmarshes are needed to draw attention to these critical ecosystems and to the benefits they generate for people. Such data can support resource management, strengthen decision-making and facilitate tracking of progress towards global conservation targets …

Improving The Identification Of Cancer In Young People: A Scoping Review, F Gibson, S Pearce, L Fern, A Martins, D Kelly
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Introduction: The challenges of achieving timely cancer diagnosis in adolescents and young adults are recognised. However, contributing factors and associated clinical and psychosocial outcomes are poorly understood. Areas covered: We present a scoping review of existing evidence into time intervals to diagnosis and potential mechanisms influencing the identification of cancer symptoms and impact on a timely diagnosis. Charting data using Walters ‘pathways to treatment’ we summarise the diagnostic pathway into four interval categories: appraisal, help-seeking, diagnostic, and pre-treatment, and illustrate where evidence exists and where unanswered questions remain. Expert commentary: Whilst the research base has expanded over the last decade …
