School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This study focuses on the fate of pharmaceuticals discharged into an estuarine environment, particularly into the Turbidity Maximum Zone (TMZ). Batch experiments were set up to investigate the factors regulating the degradation of 53 selected pharmaceuticals. Treated effluents from Bordeaux city (France) were mixed with water from the estuarine Garonne River during 4weeks under 6 characterized conditions in order to assess the influence of suspended particulates, sterilization, untreated wastewater input and dilution on the degradation kinetics. Of the 53 pharmaceuticals monitored, 43 were quantified at the initial time. Only 7 exhibited a persistent behavior (e.g. carbamazepine, meprobamate) while biotic degradation …

Winner-Take-All In A Phase Oscillator System With Adaptation, O Burylko, Y Kazanovich, R Borisyuk Jan 2018

Winner-Take-All In A Phase Oscillator System With Adaptation, O Burylko, Y Kazanovich, R Borisyuk

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We consider a system of generalized phase oscillators with a central element and radial connections. In contrast to conventional phase oscillators of the Kuramoto type, the dynamic variables in our system include not only the phase of each oscillator but also the natural frequency of the central oscillator, and the connection strengths from the peripheral oscillators to the central oscillator. With appropriate parameter values the system demonstrates winner-take-all behavior in terms of the competition between peripheral oscillators for the synchronization with the central oscillator. Conditions for the winner-take-all regime are derived for stationary and non-stationary types of system dynamics. Bifurcation …

More Faculty of Health Research

Early white matter (WM) changes are common in dementia and may contribute to functional decline. We here examine this phenomenon in an induced dementia model for the first time. We report a novel and selective form of myelin injury as the first manifestation of tauopathy in the adult central nervous system. Myelin pathology rapidly followed the induction of a P301 tau mutation associated with fronto-temporal dementia in humans (rTG4510 line). Damage involved focal disruption of the ad-axonal myelin lamella and internal oligodendrocyte tongue process, followed by myelin remodeling with features of re-myelination that included myelin thinning and internodal shortening. The …

Storm Impact And Recovery Along The South West Coast Of England, Olivier Jean-Patrick Burvingt Jan 2018

Storm Impact And Recovery Along The South West Coast Of England, Olivier Jean-Patrick Burvingt

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Extreme storms are responsible for rapid changes to coastlines worldwide. During the 2013/14 winter, the west coast of Europe experienced a sequence of large, storm-induced wave events, representing the most energetic period of waves in the last 60 years. The southwest coast of England underwent significant geomorphological change during that period, but exhibited a range of spatially variable and complex morphological responses, despite being subjected to the same storm sequence. The 2013/14 storm response along the southwest coast of England was first used as a natural field laboratory to explain the variability in storm response through the introduction and evaluation …

Public Perception Of Invasive Amphibians: Using Citizen Science To Inform Management Of Invasive Non-Native Species, Nicola Morris Jan 2018

Public Perception Of Invasive Amphibians: Using Citizen Science To Inform Management Of Invasive Non-Native Species, Nicola Morris

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Invasive non-native species (INNS) can cause problems - impacting the environment, economy and people's lives. Including the public in research through citizen science can engage communities and assist scientists in gaining access to sites for INNS management. Concerns have been raised regarding the validity of using citizen science data in research. This report aims to address those concerns to ensure that data of suitable quality is generated. A questionnaire conducted in an area known to have both invasive and native amphibians posed questions on participants connectedness to nature (using the NR-6 scale), their perception of INNS and opinions on INNS …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Protection From Hepatitis C Infection, Paraskevi Mandalou Jan 2018

Molecular Mechanisms Of Protection From Hepatitis C Infection, Paraskevi Mandalou

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major global health burden affecting 1-2% of the world’s population. The majority of infected individuals will develop chronic infection and are at risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. There is currently no preventative vaccine available for HCV. In the developed world, the highest HCV incidence and prevalence rate is amongst intravenous drug users (IDU). The duration, frequency of IDU, and sharing of drug injecting equipment contribute to particularly high rates of HCV infection in this population. Individuals at high risk of recurrent exposure to HCV infection from long term IDU have been recruited …

Supporting Information Sharing In Families At Risk Of Bowel Cancer Through A Secure Website, Selina Goodman Jan 2018

Supporting Information Sharing In Families At Risk Of Bowel Cancer Through A Secure Website, Selina Goodman

School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses

Background: Bowel cancer is a significant health threat as it is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. Screening can detect tumours early, thus allowing treatment to reduce morbidity and mortality. However, many relatives who share a high lifetime risk of bowel cancer remain unaware of their familial diagnosis and so are unable to access genetic testing or screening. Providing family letters and verbal recommendations to patients diagnosed with a vulnerability to bowel cancer has not been sufficient to support effective communication in these families. Little is known about how electronic methods of communication could be used to facilitate communication …

Investigation Of Flocculation Dynamics Under Changing Hydrodynamic Forcing On An Intertidal Mudflat, C Guo, Qing He, Prooijen Bc Van, L Guo, Andrew J. Manning, Sarah Bass

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

© 2017 In situ floc size and turbulent shear stress were measured together with suspended sediment concentration to investigate the floc properties under changing hydrodynamic forcing over the intertidal mudflat. A tripod system was established in the field for a period of approximately one month, including ~ 6 days of stormy conditions in the middle of the investigation period. Mean floc size exhibited strong temporal variations within a tidal cycle, and inverse relationship was found between mean floc size and shear stress. Suspended sediment concentration (SSC) can modulate the flocculation dynamics when shear stress decreases down to enhancing flocculation. Asymmetrical …

Taxonomy, Biogeography And Ecology Of Andean Tardigrades At Different Spatial Scales, Balbina Ramsay Jan 2018

Taxonomy, Biogeography And Ecology Of Andean Tardigrades At Different Spatial Scales, Balbina Ramsay

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Micrometazoans are animals smaller than 2 mm. Their biogeography is poorly understood, and tardigrades provide a tractable phylum for exploring distribution patterns at a variety of scales. Polylepis forest habitat offers considerable advantages for making tardigrade comparisons across a wide range of scales in the Andes. This thesis aims to improve identifications of tardigrades with a character matrix approach, to assess the relative importance of habitat and bryophyte host on tardigrades, to describe the fine-scale spatial structure of tardigrade assemblages, and to estimate the sampling effort required for a reliable estimate of tardigrade diversity within Polylepis forest. Samples of bryophytes …

Predicted And Measured Acute Toxicity And Developmental Abnormalities In Zebrafish Embryos Produced By Exposure To Individual Aromatic Acids, Steven J. Rowland, Alan G. Scarlett, Yuktee Dogra, Darren Rowe, Tamara S. Galloway

More Faculty of Science and Engineering Research

Petroleum acids, often called 'Naphthenic Acids' (NA), enter the environment in complex mixtures from numerous sources. These include from Produced and Process-Affected waters discharged from some oil industry activities, and from the environmental weathering of spilled crude oil hydrocarbons. Here, we test the hypothesis that individual NA within the complex mixtures can induce developmental abnormalities in fish, by screening a range of individual acids, with known chemical structures. Sixteen aromatic NA were tested using a Thamnocephalus platyrus (beavertail fairyshrimp) assay, to establish acute toxicity. Toxicities ranged from 568 to 8 μM, with the methylbiphenyl acid, 4-(p-tolyl)benzoic acid, most toxic. Next, …

Nano Enhanced Surface Modification Of Titanium Dental Implants For Improving Osseointegration And Biocompatibility, Ranj Salaie Jan 2018

Nano Enhanced Surface Modification Of Titanium Dental Implants For Improving Osseointegration And Biocompatibility, Ranj Salaie

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Dental implants are prone to bacterial colonisation and infection which subsequently cause dental implant failure. Coating the dental implant with an antibacterial agent and a biocompatible agent can inhibit the bacterial colonisation and infection without disturbing the biocompatibility of the implant. This study aimed to coat medical grade titanium alloy implants with silver and hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles. The reason for using silver was to introduce antibacterial activity to the coated dental implants; and then using HA to preserve biocompatibility and manage the silver exposure of the primary human osteoblast cells. Medical grade titanium alloy discs measuring 15 mm in diameter …

The Effects Of Selected Herbicides And Booster Biocides On The Brown Seaweed Ectocarpus Siliculosus, Mohd Akmal Bin Hashim

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

In the present study, two strains of Ectocarpus siliculosus with different pollution histories, LIA4 and Es524, were exposed to three PSII inhibitor herbicides, diuron (DIU), terbuthylazine (TBA) and isoproturon (IPU). Evaluation of their effects on growth and photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm, ΦPSII, qP) have demonstrated negative impacts of all herbicides on both strains. With reference to the 7 d RGR EC50 values; DIU (9.9 - 25 μg L-1); TBA (18 – 28 μg L-1); IPU (257 – 315 μg L-1), the reported environmental concentrations for DIU were higher than the values that exert negative effects to E. siliculosus. However, as for …

The NWG are geologically distinct from and biologically isolated from the other two sections of the Western Ghats. The NWG is known to possess elevated levels of endemic flora their biotic relationships remain poorly understood. We present here the first quantitative multi-taxa comparative study of plateau fauna in the northern Western Ghats. Ants, water beetles and amphibians were selected for the comparison as they use different ecological resources from each other and at various …

Forest Ecology In A Changing World: Effective Ground-Based Methods For Monitoring Temperate Broadleaved Forest Ecosystem Dynamics In Relation To Climate Change, Alison M Smith Jan 2018

Forest Ecology In A Changing World: Effective Ground-Based Methods For Monitoring Temperate Broadleaved Forest Ecosystem Dynamics In Relation To Climate Change, Alison M Smith

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The impacts of climate change on temperate forests are predicted to accelerate, with widespread implications for forest biodiversity and function. Remote sensing has provided insights into regional patterns of vegetation dynamics, and experimental studies have demonstrated impacts of specific changes on individual species. However, forests are diverse and complex ecosystems. To understand how different species in different forests respond to interacting environmental pressures, widespread ground-based monitoring is needed. The only practical way to achieve this is through the involvement of non-professional researchers, i.e., with citizen science. However, many techniques used to identify subtle changes in forests require expensive equipment and …

Infrared Thermography Of Erinaceus Europaeus: Applications With Hypothermia And Hibernation., Kathryn Elizabeth South

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Erinaceus europaeus, although widely distributed across Europe, are experiencing dramatic declines throughout their UK populations. These declines place further importance on the role of rescue and rehabilitation centres in contributing to conservation of the species. Therefore reviewing and incorporating new technology and understanding into husbandry, assessment and diagnostic protocols and practices used within these rescue centres is key to maximising success rates. This study aimed to investigate the application of infrared thermography (IRT) in a rescue centre environment to hypothermia assessment as well as hibernation monitoring. Infrared thermography (IRT) is becoming more widely available and accessible; as a non-invasive temperature …

Effects Of Increased Temperature And Copper Excess On The Physiology, Biochemistry And Gene Expression Of Ectocarpus Siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye, Alex Renato Santillán-Sarmiento

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Brown algae are an important group of organisms inhabiting coastal ecosystems worldwide. Because of their sessile nature, they are exposed to natural abiotic stresses such as high and low irradiances, desiccation, thermal fluctuations and mechanical stress, as well as anthropogenic-derived stresses such as chemical pollution. While the impacts of metal pollution affect brown algae on a local scale, there is growing concern on the potential interactions between pollutants and abiotic pressures resulting from global climate change. The main objective of this study was to determine the nature of the interactions (synergistic, additive or antagonistic) of different concentrations of copper in …

Trophic And Ecological Implications Of The Gelatinous Body Form In Zooplankton, Kristian Mcconville Jan 2018

Trophic And Ecological Implications Of The Gelatinous Body Form In Zooplankton, Kristian Mcconville

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Gelatinous zooplankton are characterised as different from other planktonic taxa due to the high relative water content of their tissues. This thesis investigates whether elevated somatic water content (expressed here as carbon percentage) has effects on the biology of zooplankton. My approach was to examine this at a range of scales with a variety of approaches, ranging from experiments on individual ephyra larvae of Aurelia aurita, through analysis of a zooplankton time series at the Plymouth L4 station, up to a large scale meta-analysis of zooplankton growth and body composition data. In this meta-analysis, carbon percentage varied continuously across the …

Development Of Probiotics For The Sustainable Cultivation Of Pirarucu, Arapaima Gigas, Gabriella Do Vale Pereira

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) from Amazon basin is currently the largest farmed fish species and its production is increasing rapidly in Brazil. However, there is a concern about bacterial disease outbreaks and resulting mortalities in pirarucu farms. The use of probiotic bacteria as prophylactic method is recognized as beneficial practice to enhance fish production. The aim of this thesis was to isolate autochthonous probiotic strains from the pirarucu intestine, characterize their potential probiotic characteristics in vitro, and perform in vivo colonization and growth experiments. To this end, the intestinal microbial community of A. gigas was assessed at two different growth …

Motivators And Dependency Within Natural And Virtual Sensation Seekers, Christopher Dallas Selvey Jan 2018

Motivators And Dependency Within Natural And Virtual Sensation Seekers, Christopher Dallas Selvey

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Inactivity and its negative implications on health, well-being and quality of life are a global issue with around 40% of adults in the UK not meeting physical activity guidelines currently sat out by the government. Modern sedentary lifestyle behaviours, such as excessive Internet and video game participation, are contributing factors to this issue. With the rise of households having accessibility to high speed connectivity and devices with the ability to access the Internet and play video games these behaviours are likely to increase. Motivation, Addiction and Sensation Seeking were measured in gamers and surfers using a self-report questionnaire survey. It …

From Pup To Predator: Ontogeny Of Foraging Behaviour In Grey Seal (Halichoerus Grypus) Pups, Matt Carter Jan 2018

From Pup To Predator: Ontogeny Of Foraging Behaviour In Grey Seal (Halichoerus Grypus) Pups, Matt Carter

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

For young animals, surviving the first year of nutritional independence requires rapid development of effective foraging behaviour before the onset of terminal starvation. Grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) pups are abandoned on the natal colony after a brief (15-21 days) suckling period and must learn to dive and forage without parental instruction. Regional and sex-specific differences in diet and foraging behaviour have been described for adults and juveniles, but the early-life behaviour of pups during the critical first months at sea remains poorly understood. This thesis investigates sources of intrinsic and extrinsic variation in the development of foraging behaviour and resource …

Kaolinite As An Amendment For Counteracting Hydrophobicity In Artificial Peat-Based Potting Substrates, Sarah Bettany Jan 2018

Kaolinite As An Amendment For Counteracting Hydrophobicity In Artificial Peat-Based Potting Substrates, Sarah Bettany

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

It has been demonstrated in pot experiments at Duchy College Rosewarne, Cornwall, U.K. that adding kaolinite (china clay) to growing media results in an increase in plant biomass. However, the underlying reason for this response is unknown, though, it is speculated that it improves the plants’ ability to tolerate stressful conditions such as heat and drought. In this study four artificial organic substrates (peat, peat/green waste, John Innes no.2 and a bark-based substrate) containing different concentrations of kaolinite (0%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 40%) were tested for capillary rise and water drop penetration time (WDPT). In addition, plant growth experiments …

Antibacterial Properties Of Tio2 Nanotubes Coated With Nano-Zno And Nano-Ag, Urvashi Fowdar Gunputh

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

TiO2 nanotubes grown on titanium alloy are known to increase the biocompatibility of the alloy when used in dental/orthopaedic implants. Furthermore, their nanotubular structures can act as antibacterial agent carrier and as a scaffold for tissue engineering with the aim of adding antibacterial properties to the implant. This study aims at fabricating an antibacterial and biocompatible nanocomposite coating on Ti-6Al-4V involving nano-ZnO and nano-Ag. Initially, TiO2 nanotubes were self-assembled on the polished surface of medical grade Ti-6Al-4V alloy discs using anodisation. First silver nanoparticles were chemically reduced from silver ammonia using delta-δ-gluconolactone for different duration on the nanotubes to form …

Ocean Acidification And Warming Impacts On Native And Non-Native Shellfish: A Multidisciplinary Assessment, Anaëlle J. Lemasson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Ocean acidification and warming have been shown to affect a wide range of marine organisms and impact assemblages and ecosystems. Many of the species experiencing negative biological effects provide valuable ecosystem services, yet it is unclear how these biological effects will affect ecosystem services provision. This thesis aimed to appraise the consequences of ocean acidification and warming on important shellfish species, from physiology to provision of ecosystem services, using a multidisciplinary approach. The responses to ocean acidification and warming of two ecologically and commercially important species of oysters – the native European Flat oyster Ostrea edulis, and the non-native Pacific …

Discolouration Complaints In Minced Meat. Do The Food Miles Travelling Affect The Customer Complaints?, Marta Martins Alves Jan 2018

Discolouration Complaints In Minced Meat. Do The Food Miles Travelling Affect The Customer Complaints?, Marta Martins Alves

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Meat discolouration is an area of significance to the meat processing industry since customers expect meat to have a bright red colour when purchased. Normally, when exposed to oxygen the myoglobin pigment in meat will give it this bright red colour as it is in the form of oxymyoglobin, but this may turn to the brown pigment metmyoglobin, and to prevent this meat is packed under a modified atmosphere containing a mix of carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen. The factory under consideration, Factory X, is located in the far SW of the UK and dispatches meat to depots across the …
