Is Europe Ready For Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture? A Survey On The Perspectives Of European Farmers And Scientists With Imta Experience, P Kleitou, D Kletou, J David
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) refers to the integrated farming of several species from different trophic levels in close proximity. In IMTA, one species is intended to complement another. The concept has long been in use in Asia and contributes significantly to the sustainability of aquaculture as it can potentially drive ecological efficiency, environmentally acceptability, product-diversity, profitability and benefit society. Although the concept has received increasing academic attention during the last two decades, it has not yet become a commercial reality in European mariculture. The reasons for this were explored, by interviewing farmers and scientists with previous experience on IMTA. The …

With robots leaving factories and entering less controlled domains, possibly sharing the space with humans, safety is paramount and multimodal awareness of the body surface and the surrounding environment is fundamental. Taking inspiration from peripersonal space representations in humans, we present a framework on a humanoid robot that dynamically maintains such a protective safety zone, composed of the following main components: (i) a human 2D keypoints estimation pipeline employing a deep learning based algorithm, extended here into 3D using disparity; (ii) a distributed peripersonal space representation around the robots body parts; (iii) a reaching controller that incorporates all obstacles entering …

BACKGROUND: Few options exist for patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma after progression with platinum-based chemotherapy. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of atezolizumab (anti-programmed death-ligand 1 [PD-L1]) versus chemotherapy in this patient population. METHODS: We conducted this multicentre, open-label, phase 3 randomised controlled trial (IMvigor211) at 217 academic medical centres and community oncology practices mainly in Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. Patients (aged =18 years) with metastatic urothelial carcinoma who had progressed after platinum-based chemotherapy were randomly assigned (1:1), via an interactive voice and web response system with a permuted block design (block …

© Inter-Research 2018. Low-pH vent systems are ideal natural laboratories to study the consequences of long-term low-pH exposure on marine species and thus identify life-history traits associated with low-pH tolerance. This knowledge can help to inform predictions on which types of species may be less vulnerable in future ocean acidification (OA) scenarios. Accordingly, we investigated how traits of calcifying polychaete species (Serpulidae, Spirorbinae) varied with pH using a functional trait analysis at 2 natural pH gradients around the Castello Aragonese islet off Ischia, Italy. We first observed the distribution and abundance patterns of all calcifying polychaete epiphytes in the canopy …

Immune Function And The Decision To Deploy Weapons During Fights In The Beadlet Anemone Actinia Equina., Sarah M. Lane, Mark Briffa
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The ability to mitigate the costs of engaging in a fight will depend on an individual's physiological state. However, the experience of fighting itself may in turn affect an individual's state, especially if the fight results in injury. Previous studies found a correlation between immune state and fighting success, but the causal direction of this relationship remains unclear. Does immune state determine fighting success? Or does fighting itself influence subsequent immune state? Using the beadlet anemone Actinia equina, we disentangle the cause and effect of this relationship, measuring immune response once pre-fight and twice post-fight. Contrary to previous findings, pre-fight …

An Effective Protocol For The Production Of Primary And Secondary Somatic Embryos In Cauliflower (Brassica Oleraceae Var. Botrytis), H Rihan, M Fuller
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
An in vitro regeneration protocol based on the use of root-derived embryogenic callus tissue was established. Three different sizes of explants were tested in order to determine the optimal size of explants for somatic embryo production. The best formation of somatic embryos was on explant size 600-1000^m achieved using 90sec duration of blending. Kinetin played an important role in somatic embryo induction, development and maturation. Embryo maturation occurred on the medium with the lowest concentration of kinetin (0.5mg L-1). Normal secondary somatic embryos (SSEs) were induced directly on hypocotyls of primary somatic when cultured on semi solid MS basal medium …

Elevated atmospheric input of nitrogen (N) is currently affecting plant biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The growth and survival of numerous plant species is known to respond strongly to N fertilization. Yet, few studies have assessed the effects of N deposition on seed quality and reproductive performance, which is an important life-history stage of plants. Here we address this knowledge gap by assessing the effects of atmospheric N deposition on seed quality of the ancient forest herb Anemone nemorosa using two complementary approaches. By taking advantage of the wide spatiotemporal variation in N deposition rates in pan-European temperate and boreal forests …

The Relationship Between Yield Parameters And Morphological Characters For Barley: Evaluating Linear And Non-Linear Models, H Rihan, A Abdullah
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The best statistical model (linear or non-linear) for use in the study of the relationship between yield parameters and morphological characters of barley was investigated. It was confirmed that Non-linear model (Exponential regression analysis) is better than linear for studying the relationship between yield parameters and morphological characters, because the determination coefficient for non-linear model was higher than the determination coefficient for linear model. Moreover, the residual distributions for non-linear equation were much better than the residual distributions for linear equation. A relationship between leafiness and yield parameters was not shown by both linear and non-linear models, while analysis of …

Trefoil Factor Family Peptides Enhance Cell Migration By Increasing Cellular Osmotic Permeability And Aquaporin 3 Levels, T Marchbank, Rj Playford
School of Biomedical Sciences
Trefoil factor family (TFF) peptides are produced rapidly at sites of injury, stimulating epithelial migration, a process involving rapid changes in cell shape and volume, requiring rapid flow of water into and out of the cell. We examined the effect of TFFs on fluidity of cells by measuring their sensitivity to osmotic challenges and cell migration, and determined whether those results were mediated through altering the levels of aquaporins (AQPs), a family of transmembrane water channels involved in cellular water homeostasis. Gastric (AGS) and colonic (Caco-2) cell lines had intrinsic TFF levels determined and the predominant TFF peptide knocked down …

Unravelling The Immune Signature Of Plasmodium Falciparum Transmission Reducing Immunity, Wjr Stone, T Bousema, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
Infection with Plasmodium can elicit antibodies that inhibit parasite survival in the mosquito, when they are ingested in an infectious blood meal. Here, we determine the transmission-reducing activity (TRA) of naturally acquired antibodies from 648 malaria-exposed individuals using lab-based mosquito-feeding assays. Transmission inhibition is significantly associated with antibody responses to Pfs48/45, Pfs230, and to 43 novel gametocyte proteins assessed by protein microarray. In field-based mosquito-feeding assays the likelihood and rate of mosquito infection are significantly lower for individuals reactive to Pfs48/45, Pfs230 or to combinations of the novel TRA-associated proteins. We also show that naturally acquired purified antibodies against key …

Ingestion And Fragmentation Of Plastic Carrier Bags By The Amphipod Orchestia Gammarellus: Effects Of Plastic Type And Fouling Load, D. J. Hodgson, A. L. Bréchon, R. C. Thompson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Inappropriate disposal of plastic debris has led to the contamination of marine habitats worldwide. This debris can be ingested by organisms; however, the extent to which chewing and gut transit modifies plastic debris is unclear. Detritivores, such as amphipods, ingest and shred natural organic matter and are fundamental to its breakdown. Here we examine ingestion and shredding of plastic carrier bags by Orchestia gammarellus. A laboratory experiment showed these amphipods shredded plastic carrier bags, generating numerous microplastic fragments (average diameter 488.59 μm). The presence of a biofilm significantly increased the amount of shredding, but plastic type (conventional, degradable and biodegradable) …

Multi-Omics Reveals The Lifestyle Of The Acidophilic, Mineral-Oxidizing Model Species Leptospirillum Ferriphilum T, S Christel, M Herold, S Bellenberg, M El Hajjami, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
Leptospirillum ferriphilum plays a major role in acidic, metal-rich environments, where it represents one of the most prevalent iron oxidizers. These milieus include acid rock and mine drainage as well as biomining operations. Despite its perceived importance, no complete genome sequence of the type strain of this model species is available, limiting the possibilities to investigate the strategies and adaptations that Leptospirillum ferriphilum DSM 14647T (here referred to as Leptospirillum ferriphilumT) applies to survive and compete in its niche. This study presents a complete, circular genome of Leptospirillum ferriphilumT obtained by PacBio single-molecule real-time (SMRT) long-read sequencing for use as …

Carbon Nanofiber Versus Graphene‐Based Stretchable Capacitive Touch Sensors For Artificial Electronic Skin, P Cataldi, S Dussoni, L Ceseracciu, M Maggiali, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Stretchable capacitive devices are instrumental for new-generation multifunctional haptic technologies particularly suited for soft robotics and electronic skin applications. A majority of elongating soft electronics still rely on silicone for building devices or sensors by multiple-step replication. In this study, fabrication of a reliable elongating parallel-plate capacitive touch sensor, using nitrile rubber gloves as templates, is demonstrated. Spray coating both sides of a rubber piece cut out of a glove with a conductive polymer suspension carrying dispersed carbon nanofibers (CnFs) or graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) is sufficient for making electrodes with low sheet resistance values (≈10 Ω sq−1). The electrodes based …

Global Proteome And Phosphoproteome Analysis Of Meningiomas, Jemma Dunn, Sara Ferluga, Edwin Lasonder, Oliver Hanemann
Peninsula Medical School
INTRODUCTIONMeningiomas are common brain tumours arising from meningeal tissue. Despite the majority of them displaying benign features, they can cause mild to severe morbidity. The current main therapeutic approach is complete tumour resection commonly with adjunct radiation therapy. However, tumour location can hamper complete resection and chemotherapies are ineffective. In this study we aim to elucidate dysregulated pathways in meningioma pathogenesis and identify novel molecular targets by deciphering the proteome and phosphoproteome of different grades of meningiomas.METHODSTumour lysates were collected from grade I, II and III frozen meningioma specimens and three normal healthy human meninges. Phosphoprotein purification was performed using …

BACKGROUND: Previous research shows that existing asthma quality of life questionnaires fail to measure the burden of oral corticosteroids that can be used to treat severe asthma, and are therefore not fit for purpose for severe asthma according to the USA's Federal Drug Authority's (FDA) criteria for content validity. Patient input and documentation of that input is key to achieving content validity according to FDA guidelines. This paper describes the process of constructing a new questionnaire to measure the burden of asthma symptoms and burden of treatment in severe asthma, using criteria specified by the FDA. METHODS: A draft severe …

© Inter-Research 201 Understanding the vertical distribution and migratory behaviour of shelled holoplanktonic gastropods is essential in determining the environmental conditions to which they are exposed. This is increasingly important in understanding the effects of ocean acidification and climate change. Here we investigated the vertical distribution of atlantid heteropods by collating data from publications and collections and using the oxygen isotope (? 18 O) composition of single aragonitic shells. Data from publications and collections show 2 patterns of migration behaviour: small species that reside in shallow water at all times, and larger species that make diurnal migrations from the surface …

Temporal Changes In Phytoplankton Biomass And Cellular Properties; Implications For The Imo Ballast Water Convention, Mct Castro, M Veldhuis
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
In the Wadden Sea, the Netherlands, and at L4 in the English Channel, UK, the size class distribution of phytoplankton was investigated with respect to the size range >10–=50 µm identified by the IMO Ballast Water Convention. Size fractionation using 10 µm mesh filtration showed considerable size bias; 23.1% of >10 µm cells were still present in the <10 µm, but 21.8% of the smaller size cells were also retained on the mesh, resulting in an overestimated number of cells/mL by as much as a factor of 5.4. Flowcytometry measurements indicated that the phytoplankton in the size range 2–50 µm was dominated by the smaller size (<10 µm) at both sites. For the >10–=50 µm size, these were on average 3.6% and 2% in the Wadden Sea and at L4, respectively. In terms of chlorophyll biomass, they represented 28.7% and 12%, respectively. The filtration method resulted in much higher chlorophyll values for 10–50 µm size …10>

Jetsam ambergris, found washed ashore on beaches, is an environmentally modified form of a natural product of Sperm whales which sometimes develops a pleasant odour. Odorous samples have proved valuable in perfumery. Identification of jetsam ambergris by analysis of organic-soluble extracts by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) and of derivatised samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has already been shown. Here, we describe a different method, in which characteristic alkenic protons and carbon atoms of the major constituent ambrein, were identified in whole extracts using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The advantages of employing NMR spectroscopy included rapidity, reduced losses …

© 2017. Atmospheric deposition is an important pathway by which bioactive trace metals are delivered to the surface ocean. The proportions of total aerosol trace metals that dissolve in seawater, and thus become available to biota, are not well constrained and are therefore a key uncertainty when estimating atmospheric fluxes of these elements to surface waters. The aim of this study was to elucidate the main physico-chemical controls on the dissolution of the bioactive trace metals manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb). To this end, aerosol and surface seawater samples were collected in the Sargasso Sea and …
