A Unique Bacteriohopanetetrol Stereoisomer Of Marine Anammox, R Schwartz-Narbonne, P Schaeffer, Ec Hopmans, M Schenesse, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a major process of bioavailable nitrogen removal from marine systems. Previously, a bacteriohopanetetrol (BHT) isomer, with unknown stereochemistry, eluting later than BHT when examined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), was detected in ‘Ca. Scalindua profunda’ and proposed as a biomarker for anammox in marine paleo-environments. However, the utility of this BHT isomer as an anammox biomarker is hindered by the fact that four other, non-anammox, bacteria are also known to produce a late-eluting BHT stereoisomer. The stereochemistry in Acetobacter pasteurianus, Komagataeibacter xylinus and Frankia sp. was known to be 17ß, 21ß(H), 22R, 32R, 33R, …

The majority of meningiomas are grade I, but some grade I tumours are clinically more aggressive. Recent advances in the genetic study of meningiomas has allowed investigation into the influence of genetics on the tumour microenvironment, which is important for tumorigenesis. We have established that the endpoint genotyping method Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR (KASP™) is a fast, reliable method for the screening of meningioma samples into different non-NF2 mutational groups using a standard real-time PCR instrument. This genotyping method and four-colour flow cytometry has enabled us to assess the variability in the largest immune cell infiltrate population, M2 macrophages (CD45+HLA-DR+CD14+CD163+) …

Plant-Life In A World Of Differential Becoming: A Speculative Inquiry, C Baker Feb 2020

Plant-Life In A World Of Differential Becoming: A Speculative Inquiry, C Baker

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This inquiry concerns a marginalized group, one subjected to the systematic manipulation and exploitation of humans over many centuries. Collectively they are known (by humans) as ‘plants’. The new planetary consciousness of science was reflected in the global scale and functions of European maritime expeditions between 16th and 20th centuries.1 Plant Hunters (the Tradescants, Banks, Masson, Humboldt, Douglas, Hooker, Fortune, the Lobbs – Veitch’ nursery which opened in 1808 in Devon alone employed 22, Wilson, Forrest, Kingdon-Ward) searched the globe for living vegetation. They imagined the establishment of vast archives of texts, images, artefacts, and specimens, patiently assembled, through which …

Global‐Scale Species Distributions Predict Temperature‐Related Changes In Species Composition Of Rocky Shore Communities In Britain, Mt Burrows, Sj Hawkins, Jj Moore, L Adams, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Changes in rocky shore community composition as responses to climatic fluctuations and anthropogenic warming can be shown by changes in average species thermal affinities. In this study, we derived thermal affinities for European Atlantic rocky intertidal species by matching their known distributions to patterns in average annual sea surface temperature. Average thermal affinities (the Community Temperature Index, CTI) tracked patterns in sea surface temperature from Portugal to Norway, but CTI for communities of macroalgae and plant species changed less than those composed of animal species. This reduced response was in line with the expectation that communities with a smaller range …

Analysis Of Attention In Child–Robot Interaction Among Children Diagnosed With Cognitive Impairment, Li Ismail, Fa Hanapiah, T Belpaeme, J Dambre, F Wyffels

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Interacting with social robots has been reported as potentially beneficial for children with social communication difficulties, with one of the promising applications being the practising of social skills, such as joint attention. We present the analysis of attention skills in children with cognitive impairments over a series of child–robot interaction sessions. Here, an interaction consists of five different modules. The first module introduces the child to the robot. The next three modules are the task modules during which children are expected to improve their attention skills during the completion of a series of social tasks. The final module is a …

On Brain Atlas Choice And Automatic Segmentation Methods: A Comparison Of Maper & Freesurfer Using Three Atlas Databases, Sn Yaakub, Ra Heckemann, Ss Keller, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Several automatic image segmentation methods and few atlas databases exist for analysing structural T1-weighted magnetic resonance brain images. The impact of choosing a combination has not hitherto been described but may bias comparisons across studies. We evaluated two segmentation methods (MAPER and FreeSurfer), using three publicly available atlas databases (Hammers_mith, Desikan-Killiany-Tourville, and MICCAI 2012 Grand Challenge). For each combination of atlas and method, we conducted a leave-one-out cross-comparison to estimate the segmentation accuracy of FreeSurfer and MAPER. We also used each possible combination to segment two datasets of patients with known structural abnormalities (Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mesial temporal lobe …

Infragravity Wave Generation On Shore Platforms: Bound Long Wave Versus Breakpoint Forcing, Tim Poate, Gerd Masselink, Martin J. Austin, Kris Inch, Mark Dickson, Robert Mccall Feb 2020

Infragravity Wave Generation On Shore Platforms: Bound Long Wave Versus Breakpoint Forcing, Tim Poate, Gerd Masselink, Martin J. Austin, Kris Inch, Mark Dickson, Robert Mccall

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Shore platforms are ubiquitous morphological features along rocky coastlines and display a spectrum of forms from gently-sloping to sub-horizontal with a low tide cliff. They generally front eroding coastal cliffs and play an important natural coastal protection role by dissipating wave energy, especially during energetic wave conditions. Sea-swell wave energy dissipates during wave breaking, but the transfer of incident wave energy to lower frequencies, resulting in infragravity waves, can enable significant amounts of wave energy to persist up to the shoreline. This residual wave motion at the shoreline can carry out geomorphic work, for example by directly impacting the cliff …

A Single System Account Of Enhanced Recognition Memory In Synaesthesia, Nicolas Rothen, Christopher J. Berry, Anil K. Seth, Sabine Oligschläger, Jamie Ward

School of Psychology

Researchers often adjudicate between models of memory according to the models’ ability to explain impaired patterns of performance (e.g., in amnesia). In contrast, evidence from special groups with enhanced memory is very rarely considered. Here, we explored how people with unusual perceptual experiences (synaesthesia) perform on various measures of memory and test how computational models of memory may account for their enhanced performance. We contrasted direct and indirect measures of memory (i.e., recognition memory, repetition priming, and fluency) in grapheme–colour synaesthetes and controls using a continuous identification with recognition (CID-R) paradigm. Synaesthetes outperformed controls on recognition memory and showed a …

Simulated Seawater Flooding Reduces Oilseed Rape Growth, Yield And Progeny Performance, Mick E. Hanley, Francesca C. Hartley, Louise Hayes, Miguel Franco

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Background and Aims Of the many threats to global food security, one of the most pressing is the increased incidence of extreme weather events. In addition to extreme rainfall, a combination of global sea level rise and storm surge is likely to result in frequent episodes of seawater flooding in arable systems along low-lying coasts. Our aim was to elucidate the effects of simulated seawater and freshwater flooding on the survival, growth and reproductive potential of four cultivars of the important seed crop, Brassica napus [canola, or oilseed rape (OSR)]. Methods Established plants were exposed to 24 or 96 h …

Epilepsy In People With Intellectual Disability, Rohit Shankar, Matthew C. Walker Jan 2020

Epilepsy In People With Intellectual Disability, Rohit Shankar, Matthew C. Walker

Peninsula Medical School

It is well recognized that both Intellectual Disability (ID) and epilepsy individually have higher rates of premature mortality. Thus, the two conditions in combination will be more likely to lead to premature mortality than either individually. People with ID and epilepsy have a higher likelihood of communication, psychiatric, behavioural, and drug sensitivity problems that makes their treatment difficult. This is not a homogenous group. At one end of the spectrum are patients with mild ID, 10–12% of who have epilepsy and treatment is mainly focused on areas like compliance and risky behaviours. At the other end are patients with severe …

The Gathering Storm: Optimizing Management Of Coastal Ecosystems In The Face Of A Climate-Driven Threat, Mick E. Hanley, Tjeerd J. Bouma, Hannah L. Mossman

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Abstract Background The combination of rising sea levels and increased likelihood of extreme storm events poses a major threat to our coastlines and as a result, many ecosystems recognized and valued for their important contribution to coastal defence face increased damage from erosion and flooding. Nevertheless, only recently have we begun to examine how plant species and communities, respond to, and recover from, the many disturbances associated with storm events. Scope We review how the threats posed by a combination of sea level rise and storms affects coastal sub-, inter- and supra-tidal plant communities. We consider ecophysiological impacts at the …

Population Fragmentation Drives Up Genetic Diversity In Signals Of Individual Identity, C Dytham, Mdf Thom Jan 2020

Population Fragmentation Drives Up Genetic Diversity In Signals Of Individual Identity, C Dytham, Mdf Thom

School of Psychology

Many species advertise their unique identity to conspecifics using dedicated individuality signals: one familiar example is human faces. But how unique in the global population do these signals need to be? While human faces are highly variable, each person interacts with many fewer individuals than are found in the total population. This raises the question of how evolutionary mechanisms drive up population-wide diversity when selection occurs at such a local level. We use an individual-based model in which individuals broadcast their identity and quality in separate, genetically-coded signals. Mimicking, for example, scent marking mammal species, females in the model assess …

The Art Of Influencing Consumer Choices: A Reflection On Recent Advances In Decision Neuroscience, Nadège Bault, Elena Rusconi Jan 2020

The Art Of Influencing Consumer Choices: A Reflection On Recent Advances In Decision Neuroscience, Nadège Bault, Elena Rusconi

School of Psychology

In recent years, our knowledge concerning the neurobiology of choice has increased tremendously. Research in the field of decision-making has identified important brain mechanisms by which a representation of the subjective value of an option is built based on previous experience, retrieved and compared to that of other available options in order to make a choice. One body of research, in particular, has focused on simple value-based choices (e.g., choices between two types of fruits) to study situations very similar to our daily life decisions as consumers. The use of neuroimaging techniques has deepened and refined our knowledge of decision …
