There are worries about the impact of epilepsy and antiepilepsy drugs (AEDs) on bone health and the increased risk of fractures. It is now considered important that people with epilepsy should be told about the long-term effects of AEDs particularly risk of fractures. People with intellectual disability are more prone to have seizures which do not respond fully to AEDs, on multiple AEDs and thus higher risk of fractures. This is a small study to see whether people with intellectual disability and/or their carers are informed of the risks of AEDs and fractures including how to reduce them. The study …

Sediment‐Induced Stratification In An Estuarine Bottom Boundary Layer, G Egan, Aj Manning, G Chang, O Fringer, S Monismith

We took field observations on the shallow shoals of South San Francisco Bay to examine how sediment-induced stratification affects the mean flow and mixing of momentum and sediment throughout the water column. A Vectrino Profiler measured near-bed velocity and suspended sediment concentration profiles, which we used to calculate profiles of turbulent sediment and momentum fluxes. Additional turbulence statistics were calculated using data from acoustic Doppler velocimeters placed throughout the water column. Results showed that sediment-induced stratification, which was set up by strong near-bed wave shear, can reduce the frictional bottom drag felt by the mean flow. AbstractBackgroundIn the UK, general practitioners (GPs) are the most commonly used providers of care for emotional concerns.ObjectiveTo update and synthesize literature on barriers and facilitators to GP–patient communication about emotional concerns in UK primary care.DesignSystematic review and qualitative synthesis.MethodWe conducted a systematic search on MEDLINE (OvidSP), PsycInfo and EMBASE, supplemented by citation chasing. Eligible papers focused on how GPs and adult patients in the UK communicated about emotional concerns. Results were synthesized using thematic analysis.ResultsAcross 30 studies involving 342 GPs and 720 patients, four themes relating to barriers were: (i) emotional concerns are difficult to disclose; (ii) tension between understanding …

There is high spatial overlap between grey seals and shipping traffic, and the functional hearing range of grey seals indicates sensitivity to underwater noise emitted by ships. However, there is still very little data regarding the exposure of grey seals to shipping noise, constraining effective policy decisions. Particularly, there are few predictions that consider the at-sea movement of seals. Consequently, this study aimed to predict the exposure of adult grey seals and pups to shipping noise along a three-dimensional movement track, and assess the influence of shipping characteristics on sound exposure levels. The number of older people, including those living with dementia, is rising, as younger age mortality declines. However, the age-specific incidence of dementia has fallen in many countries, probably because of improvements in education, nutrition, health care, and lifestyle changes. Overall, a growing body of evidence supports the nine potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia modelled by the 2017 Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention, and care: less education, hypertension, hearing impairment, smoking, obesity, depression, physical inactivity, diabetes, and low social contact. The Hierarchical Temporal Memory Cortical Learning Algorithm (HTM CLA) is a theory and machine learning technology that aims to capture cortical algorithm of the neocortex. Inspired by the biological functioning of the neocortex, it provides a theoretical framework, which helps to better understand how the cortical algorithm inside of the brain might work. It organizes populations of neurons in column-like units, crossing several layers such that the units are connected into structures called regions (areas). Redundant manipulators play important roles in many industrial and service applications by assisting people fulfill heavy and repetitive jobs. However, redundant manipulators are coupled highly-nonlinear systems which exert difficulty of redundancy resolution computation. Conventional methods such as pseudo-inverse-based approaches obtain the resolved joint angles from joint velocity level, which may bring about more computational cost and may neglect joint velocity limits. In this work, a motion planning method based on beetle antennae search algorithm (BAS) is proposed for motion planning of redundant manipulators with the variable joint velocity limit. BACKGROUND Zinc is an essential trace element integral to many cellular and immune functions. Zinc deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with cirrhosis and related to disease severity. AIM To evaluate whether zinc supplementation improves clinical outcomes (disease severity and mortality) in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS This prospectively registered systematic review (PROSPERO reference: CRD42018118219) included all studies in Medline, Embase or Cochrane database with inclusion criteria of adult human studies, comparing zinc supplementation of at least 28 d with standard care or placebo in patients with cirrhosis. Purpose: People with Intellectual Disability (ID) and epilepsy are more likely to experience psychiatric conditions, challenging behaviour (CB), treatment resistance and adverse effects of anti-seizure medications (ASM) than those without. This population receives care from various professionals, depending on local care pathways. This study evaluates the training status, confidence, reported assessment and management practices of different professional groups involved in caring for people with ID, epilepsy and CB. A Small S-Mif Signal In Martian Regolith Pyrite: Implications For The Atmosphere, Ag Tomkins, Sl Alkemade, Se Nutku, Et Al

The past Martian atmosphere is often compared to the Archean Earth’s as both were dominated by CO2-rich and O2-poor chemistries. Archean Earth rocks preserve mass-independently fractionated sulfur isotopes (S-MIF; non-zero ?33S and ?36S), originating from photochemistry in an anoxic atmosphere. Thus, Martian crustal rocks might also be expected to preserve a S-MIF signature, providing insights into past atmospheric chemistry. We have used secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) to investigate in situ, the sulfur isotope systematics of NWA 8171 (paired to NWA 7034), a Martian polymict breccia containing pyrite that formed through hydrothermal sulfur addition in a near-surface regolith setting. Creative systems such as algorithmic composers often use Artificial Intelligence models like Markov chains, Artificial Neural Networks, and Genetic Algorithms in order to model stochastic processes. Unconventional Computing (UC) technologies explore non-digital ways of data storage, processing, input, and output. UC paradigms such as Quantum Computing and Biocomputing delve into domains beyond the binary bit to handle complex non-linear functions. Objectives. There is growing evidence for the use of biofeedback (BF) in affective disorders, dissocial personality disorder, and in children with histories of abuse. Electroencephalogram (EEG) markers could be used as neurofeedback in emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) management especially for those at high risk of suicide when emotionally aroused. This narrative review investigates the evidence for EEG markers in EUPD. Methods. PRISMA guidelines were used to conduct a narrative review. Meningioma is the most common primary intracranial tumour, and surgical resection is the main therapeutic option. Merlin is a tumour suppressor protein that is frequently mutated in meningioma. The activity of the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, CRL4-DCAF1, and the Raf/MEK/ERK scaffold protein Kinase suppressor of Ras 1 (KSR1) are upregulated in Merlin-deficient tumours, which drives tumour growth. Identifying small molecules that inhibit these key pathways may provide an effective treatment option for patients with meningioma. Light is a crucial element for plant growth and production. High-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps are considered not very electrically efficient as they generate high radiant heat, and as a consequence, there has been a lot of interest in replacing HPS lamps with new more efficient lighting sources in the form of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). LEDs have a linear photon output with the electrical input current, and this great feature allows the design of lighting arrays that match the plant’s needs.
