INTRODUCTIONThis article gives an overview of constipationand related concerns in people withlearning disabilities (LDs) and/or autisticpeople. It provides recommendations toprimary care to help address this issue. Itfurthers the evidence and importance ofrecognising and managing constipation asoutlined in national guidance.1Public Health England and the Officefor National Statistics estimate thatapproximately 2.16% of adults and 2.50%of children in the UK have an LD. Autisticspectrum condition (ASC) is reported inapproximately 2% of adults and children. Itis considered that 30%–70% of people whohave an ASC will also have an LD.2

Abstract Animal personality is often studied within compressed periods of observation that represent narrow windows in comparison to animal lifespans. While much is known about the relations between repeatable personality traits and cross-situational behavioural plasticity, less is known about how such traits might differ across age classes or life-history transitions. We conducted a cross-sectional study of startle response duration in three size classes of Pagurus bernhardus, the common European hermit crab. We defined size classes using transitions in the preferred species of gastropod shells that accompany growth, and this change in preference is in turn associated with a transition from …

AbstractHematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) maintenance and the differentiation of various lineages is a highly complex but precisely regulated process. Multiple signaling pathways and an array of transcription factors influence HSPC maintenance and the differentiation of individual lineages to constitute a functional hematopoietic system. Nuclear factor of activated T cell (NFAT) family transcription factors have been studied in the context of development and function of multiple mature hematopoietic lineage cells. However, until now their contribution in HSPC physiology and HSPC differentiation to multiple hematopoietic lineages has remained poorly understood. Here, we show that NFAT proteins, specifically NFATc1, play an …

The bivalve families Teredinidae and Xylophagaidae include voracious consumers of wood in shallow-water and deep-water marine environments, respectively. The taxa are sister clades whose members consume wood as food with the aid of intracellular cellulolytic endosymbionts housed in their gills. This combination of adaptations is found in no other group of animals and was likely present in the common ancestor of both families. Despite these commonalities, the two families have followed dramatically different evolutionary paths with respect to anatomy, life history, and distribution. Here, we present 42 new mitochondrial genome sequences from Teredinidae and Xylophagaidae and show that distinct trajectories …

Wave tank model testing has been widely used to assess the performance of Wave Energy Converters (WEC) in different technology readiness levels (TRL). At early stage the use of simple wave conditions such as regular waves and parametric wave spectrum JONSWAP or Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum is acceptable. However at later stages there is a need to use site specific complex wave conditions representative of potential prototype deployment sites. In previous research, 10 different regrouping methods on HF radar measured wave spectrum were tested to find out the most representative sea states for tank testing. It has been shown that by using …

The Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica is a region that is key to a range of climatic and oceanographic processes with worldwide effects, and is characterised by high biological productivity and biodiversity. Since 2013, the International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean (IBCSO) has represented the most comprehensive compilation of bathymetry for the Southern Ocean south of 60°S. Recently, the IBCSO Project has combined its efforts with the Nippon Foundation – GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project supporting the goal of mapping the world’s oceans by 2030. New datasets initiated a second version of IBCSO (IBCSO v2). This version extends to 50°S (covering …

Dams are often regarded as greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters. However, our study indicated that the world's largest dam, the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), has caused significant drops in annual average emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O over 4300 km along the Yangtze River, accompanied by remarkable reductions in the annual export of CO2 (79%), CH4 (50%) and N2O (9%) to the sea. Since the commencement of its operation in 2003, the TGD has altered the carbonate equilibrium in the reservoir area, enhanced methanogenesis in the upstream, and restrained methanogenesis and denitrification via modifying anoxic habitats through long-distance scouring in the …
Infants Infer Different Types Of Social Relations From Giving And Taking Actions, Denis Tatone, Gergely Csibra
Infants Infer Different Types Of Social Relations From Giving And Taking Actions, Denis Tatone, Gergely Csibra
School of Psychology
Anthropological observations suggest that specific sharing behaviors may predictably covary with specific relational contexts, and thus can be used as relationally informative cues. Given their limited social experiences, cultural novices, such as infants, should be particularly likely to rely on these cues to discover the relational makeup of their social surroundings on the basis of sparse observations. The present study examines a particular hypothesis derived from this proposal, namely that infants interpret giving as indicative of social relations based on the principle of even balance. By systematically contrasting infants’ representation of giving to that of superficially similar taking events, we …

Sources, Concentrations, Distributions, Fluxes And Fate Of Microplastics In A Hypersaline Lake: Maharloo, South-West Iran, Sajjad Abbasi, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Hypersaline lakes support unique ecosystems and biogeochemistries but are often subject to anthropogenic pressures from pollution, water abstraction-diversion and climate change. Less understood, however, are the inputs, distributions and impacts of microplastics (MPs) in hypersaline environments. In this study, MPs are determined in water and sediment cores of Maharloo Lake, south-west Iran, and in the anthropogenically-impacted rivers that recharge the lake. MP concentrations in river water ranged from 0.05 MP L-1 in the headwaters to about 2 MP L-1 downstream of industrial effluents, with intermediate (but elevated) concentrations observed in the lake. The maximum surface concentration in lake sediment cores …

SQSTM1/p62, as a major autophagy receptor, forms droplets that are critical for cargo recognition, nucleation, and clearance. p62 droplets also function as liquid assembly platforms to allow the formation of autophagosomes at their surfaces. It is unknown how p62-droplet formation is regulated under physiological or pathological conditions. Here, we report that p62-droplet formation is selectively blocked by inflammatory toxicity, which induces cleavage of p62 by caspase-6 at a novel cleavage site D256, a conserved site across human, mouse, rat, and zebrafish. The N-terminal cleavage product is relatively stable, whereas the C-terminal product appears undetectable. Using a variety of cellular models, …

Air pollution may be involved in spreading dengue fever (DF) besides rainfalls and warmer temperatures. While particulate matter (PM), especially those with diameter of 10 μm (PM10) or 2.5 μm or less (PM25), and NO2 increase the risk of coronavirus 2 infection, their roles in triggering DF remain unclear. We explored if air pollution factors predict DF incidence in addition to the classic climate factors. Public databases and DF records of two southern cities in Taiwan were used in regression analyses. Month order, PM10 minimum, PM2.5 minimum, and precipitation days were retained in the enter mode model, and SO2 minimum, …

AbstractCrosstalk between different signalling pathways provide deep insights for how molecules play synergistic roles in developmental and pathological conditions. RBP-Jkappa is the key effector of the canonical Notch pathway. Previously we have identified that Wnt5a, a conventional non-canonical Wnt pathway member, was under the direct transcriptional control of RBP-Jkappa in dermal papilla cells. In this study we further extended this regulation axis to the other two kind of skeletal cells: chondrocytes and osteoblasts. Mice with conditional mesenchymal deletion of RBP-Jkappa developed Rickets like symptoms. Molecular analysis suggested local defects of Wnt5a expression in chondrocytes and osteoblasts at both mRNA and …

Infection of immunosuppressed transplant patients with the human γ-herpesvirus Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD), an often fatal complication. Immunosuppressed miniature pigs infected with γ-herpesvirus porcine lymphotropic herpesvirus 1 (PLHV1) develop a similar disease, identifying pigs as a potential preclinical model for PTLD in humans. BILF1 is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) encoded by EBV with constitutive activity linked to tumorigenesis and immunoevasive function downregulating MHC-I. In the present study, we compared BILF1-orthologues encoded by the three known PLHVs (PLHV1-3) with EBV-BILF1 to determine pharmacological suitability of BILF1 orthologues as model system to study EBV-BILF1 druggability. …

Gain Scheduling For State Space Control Of A Dual-Mode Inverted Pendulum, Laura Alvarez-Hidalgo, Ian S. Howard
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The aim of the paper is to present an inverted pendulum system that operates in two different modes. Firstly, it operates in a static balancing mode, during which the controller tries to keep the pendulum balanced during which the controller tries to keep the pendulum balanced and maintain the current position of the pendulum carriage. Secondly, it also operates in a velocity control mode, so that the carriage can move at a selective velocity while simultaneously maintaining pendulum balance. In order to realize these two modes of control we implement a state feedback controller and schedule gain depending on the …

Abstract Purse-seine fisheries use drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (dFADs), human-made floating objects, to facilitate the capture of tropical tunas. Currently, the majority of dFADs are constructed primarily of highly durable non-biodegradable materials and there is no legal obligation to recover dFADs after deployment, leading to beaching events and potentially negative environmental impacts. We assessed beachings as a function of intra- and inter-annual trends, water depth, distance from land, seasonality, and benthic habitat within the local context of the Seychelles Archipelago using trajectories of dFADs deployed by French purse seiners over 2008–2020. Overall, 3842 beaching events associated with 2371 distinct dFAD …

Biodegraders Of Large Woody Debris Across A Tidal Gradient In An Indonesian Mangrove Ecosystem, Iw Hendy, Jr Shipway, M Tupper, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
There has been limited research on the breakdown, recycling, and flux of carbon from large woody detritus (LWD) in mangrove forests. The breakdown of LWD is caused by guilds of terrestrial and marine biodegrading organisms that degrade wood at a range of rates and efficiencies. Spatial variations in environmental factors within mangroves affect the distribution and community of biodegrading organisms, which, in turn, impacts carbon flow and sequestration. We reveal the role of biodegrading organisms in LWD breakdown and the environmental factors that influence the distribution of biodegrading guilds within a mangrove forest in South East Sulawesi that supports a …

Since the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005, interest has increased in cultural ecosystem services (CESs) research to understand the complexity of the non-material benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. The intangible and interactive characteristics of CESs present many challenges regarding how to approach, quantify and even define CESs. In this paper, we suggest looking at CESs through the lens of embodied and situated cognition theories. We advocate that such an approach should be applied to the development stage of CES research projects, as the embodied and situated experience of the site aids the development of research questions and future interventions. …
