An Exploration Of The Contribution Of Embodied, Situated Research Strategies To Cultural Ecosystem Services And Landscape Assessment Frameworks: An Environmental Empathy Case Study, K Łucznik, Jv Serrano, J Martin

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Since the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005, interest has increased in cultural ecosystem services (CESs) research to understand the complexity of the non-material benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. The intangible and interactive characteristics of CESs present many challenges regarding how to approach, quantify and even define CESs. In this paper, we suggest looking at CESs through the lens of embodied and situated cognition theories. We advocate that such an approach should be applied to the development stage of CES research projects, as the embodied and situated experience of the site aids the development of research questions and future interventions. …

Samples of fresh snow (n = 34) have been collected from 29 locations in various urban and remote regions of northern Iran following a period of sustained snowfall and the thawed contents examined for microplastics (MPs) according to established techniques. MP concentrations ranged from undetected to 86 MP L−1 (mean and median concentrations ~20 MP and 12 MP L−1, respectively) and there was no significant difference in MP concentration between sample location type or between different depths of snow (or time of deposition) sampled at selected sites. Fibres were the dominant shape of MP and μ-Raman spectroscopy of selected samples …

Social prescribing is an approach that aims to improve health and well-being. It connects individuals to non-clinical services and supports that address social needs, such as those related to loneliness, housing instability and mental health. At the person level, social prescribing can give individuals the knowledge, skills, motivation and confidence to manage their own health and well-being. At the society level, it can facilitate greater collaboration across health, social, and community sectors to promote integrated care and move beyond the traditional biomedical model of health. While the term social prescribing was first popularised in the UK, this practice has become …

Pbdes In The Marine Environment: Sources, Pathways And The Role Of Microplastics, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are an important group of additives in plastics that increase resistance to ignition and slow down the rate of burning. Because of concerns about their environmental and human health impacts, however, some of the most widely employed BFRs, including hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and commercial mixtures of penta-, octa- and deca- (poly)bromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been restricted or phased out. In this review, the oceanic sources and pathways of PBDEs, the most widely used BFRs, are evaluated and quantified, with particular focus on emissions due to migration from plastics into the atmosphere versus emissions associated with the input …

Performing Resilience: Anchorage And Leverage In Live Action Role-Play Drama, Jamie Harper May 2022

Performing Resilience: Anchorage And Leverage In Live Action Role-Play Drama, Jamie Harper

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The concept of resilience is frequently described within neoliberal discourses as the ability of individuals to bounce back from shocks and reflexively adapt to changing circumstances. In ecological sciences, however, resilience is more commonly understood as the capacity of systems to radically transform themselves, when their usual mode of operation is challenged, rather than simply reverting to their original state. This article considers how live action role-play, as a form of participatory performance, might support ecological resilience by enabling players to actively reflect on their cultural practices in constructing the systems of their play and develop new capacities in the …

“What Is The Matter With Me?” Or A “Badge Of Honor”: Nurses’ Constructions Of Resilience During Covid-19, Anna Conolly, Ruth Abrams, Emma Rowland, Ruth Harris, Keith Couper, Daniel Kelly, Bridie Kent, Jill Maben

School of Nursing and Midwifery

It has long been known that nursing work is challenging and has the potential for negative impacts. During the COVID-19 pandemic most nurses’ working landscapes altered dramatically and many faced unprecedented challenges. Resilience is a contested term that has been used with increasing prevalence in healthcare with health professionals encouraging a “tool-box” of stress management techniques and resilience-building skills. Drawing on narrative interview data ( n = 27) from the Impact of Covid on Nurses (ICON) qualitative study we examine how nurses conceptualized resilience during COVID-19 and the impacts this had on their mental wellbeing. We argue here that it …

Uk State Identity-Making And British Overseas Territories’ Environments In Times Of Ecological Crisis And Geopolitical Change, N Harmer, I Bailey, N Hart

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Analysis of state identity constructions can provide important insights into the ideologies, values, ambitions and policies of influential state actors. Existing research on state identities has focused mainly on how such identities are constructed and utilised within domestic politics or conventional inter-state/international relations but limited attention has been paid to how states construct their identities in relation to, and through, overseas territories that occupy liminal positions of sovereignty. This article addresses this gap by investigating how state actors have discursively constructed the UK’s identities through the lens of environmental protection in the UK’s overseas territories. It analyses UK parliamentary debate …

The Occurrence Of Monoclinic Jarosite In Natural Environments, N Stephen, A Whitworth May 2022

The Occurrence Of Monoclinic Jarosite In Natural Environments, N Stephen, A Whitworth

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Jarosite and related subgroup minerals are of high importance in mineral processing, as sources and sinks for metals and acidity in the environment, and they have the potential to preserve elemental and isotopic biomarkers relevant to the search for life in the solar system. The crystal structures and chemistry of jarosite minerals affect their stability and reactivity and thus the roles they play in natural and engineered systems. Rhombohedral symmetry has been documented in natural and synthetic jarosites, whereas monoclinic symmetry has only been documented in synthetic jarosites. This research reports the occurrence of monoclinic symmetry in a natural natrojarosite …

Learning From Natural Sediments To Tackle Microplastics Challenges: A Multidisciplinary Perspective, K Waldschläger, Mzm Brückner, B Carney Almroth, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Although the study of microplastics in the aquatic environment incorporates a diversity of research fields, it is still in its infancy in many aspects while comparable topics have been studied in other disciplines for decades. In particular, extensive research in sedimentology can provide valuable insights to guide future microplastics research. To advance our understanding of the comparability of natural sediments with microplastics, we take an interdisciplinary look at the existing literature describing particle properties, transport processes, sampling techniques and ecotoxicology. Based on our analysis, we define seven research goals that are essential to improve our understanding of microplastics and can …

Future Climate Change Conditions May Compromise Metabolic Performance In Juveniles Of The Mud Crab Scylla Serrata, Elina Apine, Madhu K. Mani, Praveen Rai, Indrani Karunasagar, Lucy M. Turner

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Research characterising the effects of future climate change on the marine environment remains heavily focussed on that of temperate regions and organisms. Furthermore, little is known of these effects on the early life stages of many marine species. Tropical regions are already experiencing an increase in sea surface temperature and decrease in sea surface salinity, conditions favoured by pathogenic bacteria such as Vibrio spp. The early life stages of crabs are known to be particularly vulnerable to both the direct physiological effects of climate change and exposure to harmful microorganisms, yet there are limited data on these effects on juveniles …

The Southern Ocean paleoceanography provides key insights into how iron fertilization and oceanic productivity developed through Pleistocene ice-ages and their role in influencing the carbon cycle. We report a high-resolution record of dust deposition and ocean productivity for the Antarctic Zone, close to the main dust source, Patagonia. Our deep-ocean records cover the last 1.5 Ma, thus doubling that from Antarctic ice-cores. We find a 5 to 15-fold increase in dust deposition during glacials and a 2 to 5-fold increase in biogenic silica deposition, reflecting higher ocean productivity during interglacials. This antiphasing persisted throughout the last 25 glacial cycles. Dust …

Cadmium Resistant Bacteria Mediated Cadmium Removal: A Systematic Review On Resistance, Mechanism And Bioremediation Approaches, Nadia Jebril, Rich Boden, Charlotte Braungardt

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Cadmium-resistant bacteria that are used to remove cadmium (Cd) are becoming increasingly of the most important and hygienic method. Resistant mechanisms are involved in different ways, and some of them which can be used in cadmium removal techniques based on their molecular mechanisms and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). This review summarises recent improvements in understanding the mechanisms by which bacteria are either intrinsically resistant or acquire resistance to cadmium to be used as a way for cadmium removal.

Abstract. Quantitative reconstructions of past land cover are necessary to determine the processes involved in climate–human–land-cover interactions. We present the first temporally continuous and most spatially extensive pollen-based land-cover reconstruction for Europe over the Holocene (last 11 700 cal yr BP). We describe how vegetation cover has been quantified from pollen records at a 1∘ × 1∘ spatial scale using the “Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites” (REVEALS) model. REVEALS calculates estimates of past regional vegetation cover in proportions or percentages. REVEALS has been applied to 1128 pollen records across Europe and part of the eastern Mediterranean–Black Sea–Caspian …

The Unrecognized Importance Of Carbon Stocks And Fluxes From Swamps In Canada And The Usa, Scott J. Davidson, E Daze, Eunji Byun, Dean Hiler, Markus Kangur, Julie Talbot, Sarah A. Finkelstein, Maria Strack

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Abstract Swamps are a highly significant wetland type in North America both in terms of areal extent and their role in terrestrial carbon cycling. These wetlands, characterized by woody vegetation cover, encompass a diverse suite of ecosystems, including broad-leaved, needle-leaved, mixedwood or shrub/thicket swamps. Uncertainties in the role of swamps in carbon uptake and release continue to be substantial due to insufficient data on variabilities in carbon densities across diverse swamp types and relatively few flux measurements from swamp sites. Robust measurements of rates of vertical accretion of swamp soils and the associated long-term rates of carbon accumulation, alongside measurements …

The blue economy has roots in the international arena of sustainable development and sets out to unlock opportunities for economy and society whilst protecting and enhancing marine environments. To date there has been no analysis of how this overarching intention for sustainability has influenced the rapid development of blue economy policies at national and regional scales. In this article, we analyse the synergies and conflicts between blue economy policies from a diversity of national and regional policies and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We show that to maintain critical alignment with targets for sustainability, place-based contextual development of blue economies …

Atmospheric Transport Of Microplastics During A Dust Storm, Sajjad Abbasi, Mahrooz Rezaei, Farnaz Ahmadi, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Dust storms are common events in arid and semi-arid regions that have a wide range of impacts on the environment and human health. This study addresses the presence, characteristics and potential sources of microplastics (MPs) in such events by analysing MPs deposited with dust particles in the metropolis of Shiraz, southwest Iran, following an intense storm in May 2018. At 22 locations throughout the city, MP concentrations on a number basis ranged from 0.04 to 1.06 per g of dust (median = 0.31 MP g−1). Particles were mainly fibrous, with a mean diameter of about 20 μm and >60% under …

Airborne particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic size cutoff of 10 µm (PM10) has been collected using a high volume air sampler at two locations (urban and residential) in the city of Ahvaz, Iran, for sixteen 24-hour periods over four months (late summer to early winter). Microplastics (MPs) in the PM were isolated after sample digestion and were subsequently characterised by established techniques. All MPs sampled (n = 322) were of a fibrous nature, with polyethylene terephthalate, nylon and polypropylene being the dominant polymers and consistent with textiles and fabrics as the principal source. Despite a distinct seasonality (temperature and …
