Can Big Data And Predictive Analytics Improve Social And Environmental Sustainability?, R Dubey, A Gunasekaran, Sj Childe, T Papadopoulos, Z Luo, Sf Wamba, D Roubaud

Plymouth Business School

Although literature indicates that big data and predictive analytics (BDPA)convey a distinct organisational capability, little is known about their performance effects in particular contextual conditions (inter alia, national context and culture, and firm size). Grounding our investigation in the dynamic capability views and organisational culture and based on a sample of 205 Indian manufacturing organisations, we empirically investigate the effects of BDPA on social performance (SP)and environmental performance (EP)using variance based structural equation modelling (i.e. PLS). We find that BDPA has significant impact on SP/EP. However, we did not find evidence for moderating role of flexible orientation and control orientation …

Switching Deformation Mode And Mechanisms During Subduction Of Continental Crust: A Case Study From Alpine Corsica, G Molli, L Menegon, A Malasoma Jul 2017

Switching Deformation Mode And Mechanisms During Subduction Of Continental Crust: A Case Study From Alpine Corsica, G Molli, L Menegon, A Malasoma

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The switching in deformation mode (from distributed to localized) and mechanisms (viscous versus frictional) represent a relevant issue in the frame of crustal deformation, being also connected with the concept of the brittle–ductile transition and seismogenesis. In a subduction environment, switching in deformation mode and mechanisms and scale of localization may be inferred along the subduction interface, in a transition zone between the highly coupled (seismogenic zone) and decoupled deeper aseismic domain (stable slip). However, the role of brittle precursors in nucleating crystal-plastic shear zones has received more and more consideration being now recognized as fundamental in some cases for …

An Exploration Of Important Factors In The Decision-Making Process Undertaken By Foundation Degree Students With Respect To Level 6 Progression, C Schofield, L Mckenzie Jul 2017

An Exploration Of Important Factors In The Decision-Making Process Undertaken By Foundation Degree Students With Respect To Level 6 Progression, C Schofield, L Mckenzie

Plymouth Institute of Education

Deciding what degree to study and where are very important decisions to make for a range of practical and economic reasons, and much research has been undertaken in this area. What has not been considered previously is the decision-making processes of students who have completed an associate degree, such as a Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree, and are now considering where to complete their Bachelor education. Associate degrees are often provided by further education colleges (FECs) in partnership with universities, and the choices available to college-based higher education students are whether to continue at the college or move to …

Geographical Aesthetics: Imagining Space, Staging Encounters, P Smith Jul 2017

Geographical Aesthetics: Imagining Space, Staging Encounters, P Smith

School of Art, Design and Architecture

‘Geographical Aesthetics’ is ambitious. It seeks to marshal twelve papers on disparate subjects and with contrasting methodological and analytical approaches, advocate a new aesthetics by articulating key provisional theoretical principles, possible projects and trajectories, while re-describing geography as an always at least partially aesthetic discipline. Where its editors Harriet Hawkins and Elizabeth Straughan’s task is trickiest is where they feel out continuities across longstanding controversies – “ethereal and precious” aesthetics as tending to the apolitical (it is hard to fit, say, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Erika Fischer-Lichte and Hans-Thies Lehmann into this description), polarities of sublime and picturesque, aspirations for relational and …

Rethinking The Social Smart City, L Melgaco, K Willis Jul 2017

Rethinking The Social Smart City, L Melgaco, K Willis

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Much of our thinking around technology and the city is based around polarising paradigms. These tend to move between two different approaches; the technocratic and the social. On one hand the smart city agenda is underpinned by a vision of data-centred optimisation of urban systems, whilst on the other hand there is a focus on open-source, citizen driven approach based around ad-hoc practices and prototyping of counter-culture scenarios. To date, the technocratic paradigm has tended to dominate smart city projects and initiatives, which are often led by ICT companies. Many smart city concepts and projects tend to prioritise data capture …

The Interdisciplinary Use Of “Overpressure”, D. C.P. Peacock, M. W. Anderson, A. Rotevatn, D. J. Sanderson, E. Tavarnelli Jun 2017

The Interdisciplinary Use Of “Overpressure”, D. C.P. Peacock, M. W. Anderson, A. Rotevatn, D. J. Sanderson, E. Tavarnelli

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Overpressure is a polysemic word that has a variety of meanings within and across different disciplines. This is likely to be a particular problem in analysis of geothermal resources, where reservoir engineers, volcanologists and structural geologists may each confidently use overpressure but mean different things. We suggest that, to avoid confusion, the term should be carefully and accurately defined whenever used. We also suggest that other, less ambiguous terms be used, such as supra-hydrostatic fluid pressure when fluid pressure exceeds that expected in a column of water at that depth, and supra-lithostatic fluid pressure for the situation in which fluid …

Atomic Spectrometry Update: Review Of Advances In Elemental Speciation, Robert Clough, Chris F. Harrington, Steve J. Hill, Yolanda Madrid, Julian F. Tyson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This is the ninth Atomic Spectrometry Update (ASU) to focus on advances in elemental speciation and covers a period of approximately 12 months from December 2015. This ASU review deals with all aspects of the analytical atomic spectrometry speciation methods developed for: the determination of oxidation states; organometallic compounds; coordination compounds; metal and heteroatom-containing biomolecules, including metalloproteins, proteins, peptides and amino acids; and the use of metal-tagging to facilitate detection via atomic spectrometry. The review does not cover fractionation, which is sometimes termed operationally defined speciation. As with all ASU reviews the focus of the research reviewed includes those methods …

Biological Attenuation Of Arsenic And Iron In A Continuous Flow Bioreactor Treating Acid Mine Drainage (Amd), L Fernandez-Rojo, M Héry, P Le Pape, C Braungardt, Et Al Jun 2017

Biological Attenuation Of Arsenic And Iron In A Continuous Flow Bioreactor Treating Acid Mine Drainage (Amd), L Fernandez-Rojo, M Héry, P Le Pape, C Braungardt, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Passive water treatments based on biological attenuation can be effective for arsenic-rich acid mine drainage (AMD). However, the key factors driving the biological processes involved in this attenuation are not well-known. Here, the efficiency of arsenic (As) removal was investigated in a bench-scale continuous flow channel bioreactor treating As-rich AMD (~30-40 mg L-1). In this bioreactor, As removal proceeds via the formation of biogenic precipitates consisting of iron- and arsenic-rich mineral phases encrusting a microbial biofilm. Ferrous iron (Fe(II)) oxidation and iron (Fe) and arsenic removal rates were monitored at two different water heights (4 and 25 mm) and with/without …

Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Of Complex Mixtures Of Anaerobic Bacterial Metabolites Of Petroleum Hydrocarbons, S. J. Rowland, C. M. Aitken, I. M. Head, A. G. Scarlett, C. E. West

More Faculty of Science and Engineering Research

Anaerobic biotransformation of petroleum hydrocarbons is an important alteration mechanism, both subsurface in geological reservoirs, in aquifers and in anoxic deep sea environments. Here we report the resolution and identification, by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS), of complex mixtures of aromatic acid and diacid metabolites of the anaerobic biodegradation of many crude oil hydrocarbons. An extended range of metabolites, including alkylbenzyl, alkylindanyl, alkyltetralinyl, alkylnaphthyl succinic acids and alkyltetralin, alkylnaphthoic and phenanthrene carboxylic acids, is reported in samples from experiments conducted under sulfate-reducing conditions in a microcosm over two years. The range of metabolites identified shows that the fumarate addition …

Sufficient historical detail is provided on the development of tourism in France and the United Kingdom to provide a context for the discussion of how comparative education practices can inform and improve the provision of university education in Europe. Findings from a recent empirical comparative study of university provision for tourism and hospitality studies are presented and analysed to progress the work in this field of research. Finally, very recent moves, especially in industry-specific education in France, are combined with the teaching initiative called CLIL (Content & Language Integrated Learning) to offer a way forward for educators in tourism and …

Foreign Direct Investment As A Catalyst For Domestic Firm Development: The Case Of Sri Lanka, P Konara, Y Wei Jun 2017

Foreign Direct Investment As A Catalyst For Domestic Firm Development: The Case Of Sri Lanka, P Konara, Y Wei

Plymouth Business School

Foreign direct investment (FDI) carried out by multinational enterprises (MNEs) is recognized as a mechanism through which domestic firms can learn and improve competitiveness. Unlike the extant literature, which tends to focus on the aggregate effects of FDI in Sri Lanka, we investigate the role of FDI for domestic firm development at the firm level. Using World Bank Enterprise Survey data supplemented by industry data, preliminary investigation reveals that, compared with domestic firms, MNEs are larger, more productive, more profitable and more active in research and development (R&D). MNEs hire higher proportions of skilled workers and undertake more in-house training …

Students’ Perception Towards Hospitality Education: An Anglo-Cypriot Critical Study, S Nachmias, A Walmsley, Y Orphanidou Jun 2017

Students’ Perception Towards Hospitality Education: An Anglo-Cypriot Critical Study, S Nachmias, A Walmsley, Y Orphanidou

Plymouth Business School

The study investigates hospitality students’ attitude towards hospitality education and hospitality careers. A qualitative approach was adapted to record students’ attitude in the UK and Cyprus. The findings revealed that participants share common concerns and expectations regarding hospitality education and careers. A number of cognitive-person and external variables are perceived to act as influencing factors on hospitality education and careers, raising questions with regard to the student preparedness for the industry. This study provides a theoretical underpinning to hospitality literature that can be used to further fruitful thinking with implications for practice and further research.

Settling-Driven Gravitational Instabilities Associated With Volcanic Clouds: New Insights From Experimental Investigations, S Scollo, C Bonadonna, I Manzella

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Downward propagating instabilities are often observed at the bottom of volcanic plumes and clouds. These instabilities generate fingers that enhance the sedimentation of fine ash. Despite their potential influence on tephra dispersal and deposition, their dynamics is not entirely understood, undermining the accuracy of volcanic ash transport and dispersal models. Here, we present new laboratory experiments that investigate the effects of particle size, composition and concentration on finger generation and dynamics. The experimental set-up consists of a Plexiglas tank equipped with a removable plastic sheet that separates two different layers. The lower layer is a solution of water and sugar, …

Importing Gendered Legal Reasoning From England: Wife Murders In Early Colonial India, 1805–1857, Djr Grey

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The informal criminal defence in India of ‘injured masculine honour’ was steadily narrowed over the course of the nineteenth century. Yet this remained a popular – and extremely effective – appeal to the judiciary. This article argues that such regular and successful appeals by husbands in India are best understood by examining how lethal domestic violence was represented in England, and how this cultural baggage was transferred to Indian courts as a central part of the new ‘Anglo-Muhammadan’ criminal law. Such gendered legal ideas, as I demonstrate here, seriously limited the chances that wife-killers in colonial India would be brought …

Enhancing Productivity And Resource Conservation By Eliminating Inefficiency Of Thai Rice Farmers: A Zero Inefficiency Stochastic Frontier Approach, J Liu, S Rahman, S Sriboonchitta, A Wiboonpongse

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The study first identified fully efficient farmers and then estimated technical efficiency of inefficient farmers, identifying their determinants by applying a Zero Inefficiency Stochastic Frontier Model (ZISFM) on a sample of 300 rice farmers from central-northern Thailand. Next, the study developed scenarios of potential production increase and resource conservation if technical inefficiency was eliminated. Results revealed that 13% of the sampled farmers were fully efficient, thereby justifying the use of our approach. The estimated mean technical efficiency was 91%, implying that rice production can be increased by 9%, by reallocating resources. Land and labor were the major productivity drivers. Education …

Infiltration Of Meteoric Water In The South Tibetan Detachment (Mount Everest, Himalaya): When And Why?, A Gébelin, Mj Jessup, C Teyssier, Ma Cosca, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The South Tibetan Detachment (STD) in the Himalayan orogen juxtaposes low-grade Tethyan Himalayan sequence sedimentary rocks over high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Himalayan crystalline core. We document infiltration of meteoric fluids into the STD footwall at ~17–15 Ma, when recrystallized hydrous minerals equilibrated with low-dD (meteoric) water. Synkinematic biotite collected over 200m of structural section in the STD mylonitic footwall (Rongbuk Valley, near Mount Everest) record high-temperature isotopic exchange with D-depleted water (dDwater = –150 ± 5‰) that infiltrated the ductile segment of the detachment most likely during mylonitic deformation, although later isotopic exchange cannot be definitively excluded. These minerals …
