Entry into higher education (HE) is recognised as a challenging time for undergraduates as they negotiate the norms and practices of new academic communities and foster relationships with peers and academics. Given the significance of this time period, our University has piloted a new four-week module that immerses students in their discipline and provides them with the academic skills and networks to support them through this period and beyond. Here we report a comprehensive evaluation examining academic and student experience of this immersive module. We explore its impact on essential aspects of the transition experience e.g. social integration, academic literacies …

Effective Chemical Treatment For High Efficiency Graphene/Si Schottky Junction Solar Cells With A Graphene Back-Contact Structure, A Suhail, G Pan, K Islam, D Jenkins, A Milne
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We demonstrate a high-efficiency graphene/Si Schottky junction solar cell with an easy to fabricate graphene back-contact structure and effective chemical treatments. This device effectively overcame the current challenges associated with reported graphene/Si Schottky solar cell structures. The short-circuit current density for such a device is increased by around 20% due to the increase of the active area of this device, compared to previous graphene/Si Schottky junction solar cell devices. The undesirable s-shaped kink in J-V curves, as found in previous works, have been eliminated by using Formamide treatment for 30 min prior to an annealing process in the forming gas. …

© 2017 The Authors Unravelling patterns of relative sea-level change during previous interglacials enhances our understanding of ice sheet response to changing climate. Temperate-latitude estuarine environments have the potential to preserve continuous records of relative sea level from previous interglacial (warm) periods. This is important because, currently, we typically only have snapshots of sea-level highstands from low-latitude corals and raised palaeoshoreline indicators while the (continuous) deep-sea oxygen isotope record only provides indirect evidence of sea-level changes. Here, we focus on the Nar Valley in eastern England, in which is preserved evidence of a late middle-Pleistocene marine transgression more than 20 …

Crystallographic Control And Texture Inheritance During Mylonitization Of Coarse Grained Quartz Veins, A Ceccato, G Pennacchioni, L Menegon, M Bestmann
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Quartz veins within Rieserferner pluton underwent deformation during post-magmatic cooling at temperature around 450 °C. Different crystallographic orientations of cm-sized quartz vein crystals conditioned the evolution of microstructures and crystallographic preferred orientations (CPO) during vein-parallel simple shear up to high shear strains (? ˜ 10). For ? < 2, crystals stretched to ribbons of variable aspect ratios. The highest aspect ratios resulted from {m} glide in ribbons with c-axis sub-parallel to the shear zone vorticity Y-axis. Ribbons with c-axis orthogonal to Y (XZ-type ribbons) were stronger and hardened more quickly: they show lower aspect ratios and fine (grain size ~ 10–20 µm) recrystallization along sets of microshear zones (µSZs) exploiting crystallographic planes. Distortion of XZ-type ribbons and …

Evidence For The Early Onset Of The Ipswichian Thermal Optimum: Palaeoecology Of Last Interglacial Deposits At Whittlesey, Eastern England, H Langford, S Boreham, Rm Briant, Gr Coope, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Fossiliferous deposits infilling a channel at Whittlesey, eastern England, are dated by amino acid racemization to the Last Interglacial, and pollen analysis indicates deposition in Ipswichian biozones Ip Ib and Ip IIb. Multidisciplinary palaeoenvironmental analyses of these deposits provide a rare insight into Ip Ib subzone conditions. Specifically, the Ip Ib deposits contain exotic thermophiles Naias minor, Belgrandia marginata, Bembidion elongatum, Pelochares versicolor, Caccobius schreberi, Onthophagus massai and Emys orbicularis, usually associated with Ip IIb. Combined palaeotemperature reconstructions based on beetle, ostracod and vertebrate assemblages of the Ip Ib deposits indicate that summers (mean July range +19 to +22°C) were …

In this article we first discuss the Brexit referendum and its links to changes in the nature of racism in England, drawing on Burnett’s (2013) work to demonstrate how ‘local conditions, national politics and global conditions’ have prompted violent racism in new areas of the country. Within this atmosphere of heightened tension, anti-Muslim abuse and attacks have risen over the past two years, with a proportion of these incidents taking place in universities. We then examine the implications of the counter-terrorist Prevent agenda, arguing that educators’ statutory duty to ‘have due regard to the need to prevent people from being …

Spatializing Climate Justice: Justice Claim Making And Carbon Pricing Controversies In Australia, Ian Bailey
Spatializing Climate Justice: Justice Claim Making And Carbon Pricing Controversies In Australia, Ian Bailey
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Recent years have seen significant academic attention to conceptualizing climate justice and how its ideas might be mobilized in political debates on climate policy. This article contributes to these debates by advancing two arguments. The first concerns the need for greater examination of how climate justice coexists and competes with more established political and justice considerations during the negotiation of climate policies. I argue that distinguishing analytically between normative interpretations of climate justice and justice claims made by parties affected by climate change or by mitigation or adaptation policies provides fertile ground for deepening understanding of the multivalent and relational …

A growing world population and socio-economic development are at the root of an ever-increasing energy demand throughout the world. Much of this demand is met by means of fossil fuels, leading to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change – hence the need for increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the global energy mix. Marine energy is a reliable, high-density source of energy with limited environmental impacts. Iran, with its long coastline, growing population, increasing energy demands and extreme air pollution, has a great potential for the development of marine energy. However, this potential has not received sufficient legislative …
Demonstrating The Applicability Of Robust Decision Making (Rdm) To Conservation Decision-Making Under Uncertain Future Climate: Pilot Study Using The Northern Pygmy Salamander (Desmognathus Organi)., C Parmesan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Climate change challenges conservation planners in making decisions about habitat site selection and augmentation. This pilot study explores the use of Robust Decision Making (RDM), a decision analytic approach employed in water and coastal management, for conservation decision-making. It employs the RDM approach to design a theoretical decision experiment that compares the differences in performance between stylized static and adaptive land purchase strategies that notionally aim to protect additional habitat for Desmognathus organi, a salamander in the south central Appalachians, under uncertain future climate conditions. The static strategy purchases a specific parcel of land in the present, whereas the adaptive …

How do stereotypes – as rhetorical, homogenising claims about the Self and Other – survive despite their users having personal experiences that contradict them? This article addresses this question by examining why the Christian and Muslim inhabitants of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta insist the ‘moro’ is a cunning, hostile antagonist, even when their interactions with Moroccans tend to be profitable, and even as ethnographers of mainland Spain report widespread revisions of the Moorish migrant’s negative image and the country’s Islamic past. Building on the interpretative model of stereotypes developed by Herzfeld, Brown and Theodossopolous, I argue that the ‘moro’ …

The Limitations Of Hibonite As A Single-Mineral Oxybarometer For Early Solar System Processes, Aj Berry, Pf Schofield, An Kravtsova, La Miller, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The relationships between the composition of hibonite with the general formula CaAl12-2x-yMgxTi4+xTi3+yO19, the oxidation state of Ti (Ti3+/ΣTi, where ΣTi = Ti3+ + Ti4+), and oxygen fugacity (fO2) were investigated experimentally. It was found that hibonite can be synthesised with a range of Ti3+/ΣTi values at constant fO2 and with a constant Ti3+/ΣTi value for a range of fO2s. It was also found that if hibonite with the formula CaAl12-yTi3+yO19 (Ti3+/ΣTi = 1) is equilibrated with a melt of CAI composition at fO2s below the iron-wüstite buffer then the resulting hibonite contained Mg, with Mg per formula unit (pfu) ~ …

In this study we collected suspended particulate matter (SPM) along a transect from the East Sea to the Bering Sea from 18 to 28 July in 2015. We then analyzed the samples for the Arctic sea ice proxy IP25 together with various phytoplankton-derived lipids including a tri-unsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI triene) and two sterols (brassicasterol and dinosterol) to assess the suitability of these compounds for the so called PIP25 index in the western Arctic region as a proxy for sea ice change in the past. The distributions of some other commonly reported sterols (cholesterol and 24-methylene cholesterol) were also …

Analyzing Riparian Zone Ecosystem Services Bundles To Instruct River Management, Looy K Van, Thierry Tormos, Yves Souchon, David Gilvear
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The ecosystem service framework is now well accepted for focussing management strategies to preserve and restore ecosystems. Its implementation remains challenging, however, due to the environment’s complexity and dynamics that interfere with ecosystems’ ability to provide the services. Here, we question whether we can show where and how to intervene in riparian corridors to restore specific ecosystem services without endangering others. Specific hypotheses in this context are for the spatial aggregation of ecosystem services delivered by riparian corridors with respect to naturalness (1), to the existence of bundles of ecosystem services (2), and finally for the scale sensitivity of this …

In Situ Elemental Characterisation Of Marine Microplastics By Portable Xrf., Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The performance of a portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer configured in a test stand and coupled to a laptop has been evaluated for the determination of various elements (including Br, Cd, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn) in beached microplastics. Under laboratory conditions, analysis of samples that covered the 3-mm x-ray beam returned concentrations that, on average, were within 20% of concentrations determined by ICP following acid digestion. Analysis of progressively smaller offcuts (to <1mm) resulted in corresponding concentrations that were comparable to those determined in original samples but errors and detection limits that progressively increased. When the configuration was deployed in situ with two operators, up to 35 microplastics counted for 60s each could be processed per hour. Advantages of immediate measurements include the development of an iterative study strategy, rapid compliance-evaluation, and identification of specific materials for further characterisation or study in the laboratory.

INTRODUCTION: Medical regulation is rapidly changing with claims that systems such as revalidation/relicensing will reassure the public. Yet the impact of such initiatives is unknown. METHODS: Using the principles of efficiency, calculability, predictability and control through technology, identified by Ritzer, and exampled by the McDonalds business model, we analyzed interviews with doctors between May 2012-Dec 2013 which focused on doctor experiences of appraisal and revalidation in SW England. RESULTS: The research found significant changes in appraisals since the launch of revalidation in December 2012. Appraisal has been standardized with a list of supporting information that must be collected by doctors. …

Two Walks With Objects, P Smith
School of Art, Design and Architecture
‘Two Walks With Objects’ attempts a tainted auto-ethnographic review of the affects and actions arising from reviewing the images remaining from two walks with objects, the first in 2013 and the second in 2017. The article sets out, within the context of a growing discussion about the agency of unhuman and nonhuman things and a refinement of neo-vitalist and object-based ontology, to narrate affect within an archive against the effects of memory, triangulating these not with a third human source, but with the absence of the things themselves, which are present only as written descriptions and photographic representations. By framing …
